Has anyone suddenly "gone off" alcohol

Hi, this may sound strange or perhaps not, but this year for some reason I have totally gone off alcohol. I'm 39, and usually would enjoy a bottle of prosecco over a weekend, or a couple of glasses of wine once Friday eve came, even looking forward to it to destress after a busy week. However, I would say since last Xmas I've totally gone off it. Its really odd, I can still fancy it, especially in the hot weather we recently had, even went to the shop specially 🤣 to pick some up, got home, poured a glass, had a sip, didn't want it. This is how I've been all year, when I've been out to a pub, not one alcohol beverage took my fancy, and I ordered a lemon flavoured cocktail in the end to shut everyone else up. Anyone else gone through this, like even earlier on today I thought I'll have a glass, but then here I am writing this, only after I got curious, googled and the only hits I can see about going off alcohol is advice on withdrawal if you have an alcohol addiction. I'm just curious really, is there something wrong with me 😅.

typical perimenopause and menopause symptom.

That.

TolpuddleFarter · 15/09/2025 18:29

Me too!

I am 43, and enjoyed drinking anywhere between one and three times a week. The past month I feel sick if I think of it, and when offered a drink I feel pure aversion. It is very odd!

Interesting I have gone right off alcohol too and this could be the reason why. I used to enjoy a glass or two or three… of wine at weekends and now it doesn’t interest me at all. I can go weeks if not months without touching a drop.

No

OP, are you on Mounjaro by any chance? Apparently, it kills off your addictions like alcohol and cigarettes.

Mangetouts · 15/09/2025 20:02

I have a habit ie a Saturday evening glass of wine habit. I just don't enjoy it anymore.

The joys of menopause 😕

Me — I used to have a glass or two most nights, and even worried I drank too much. Am perimenopausal and on HRT, and in the last few months I’ve just gone right off it. Even when I have a glass it just doesn’t seem to taste nice, and I rarely finish the glass. Sometimes it even brings on a hot flush or nausea quite quickly and I feel unpleasantly woozy rather than relaxed.

I’m a bit pissed off about it to be honest, as I have few other small pleasures in life, and a nice glass of wine with dinner was one thing I actually enjoyed! I’ve heard that it gets better again after menopause, but I don’t know if that’s true.

Yep! Exactly this!!! Its crazy how little I drink now compared to a couple yrs ago! 41, peri menopausal & only have a couple kopperbergs a week now (if that!!)

The wine you were drinking is not satisfying you. You should try a better quality, a vintage, preferably French and bottled at the Chateau.

The wines which keep when opened in the fridge for days, are the expensive ones, like Chablis and Meursault. How much they cost depends on the vintage and where they were produced and where you buy them. There are online auctions you can bid online and get very reasonably priced vintages.

Perhaps one bottle of good plonk a week will be more satisfying that cheap wine which sometimes has added alcohol. The price will ensure you don't go too heavy on it.

St. Paul wrote in his letter to Timothy: 'Take a little wine with your food to help your digestion'. Very sound advice, and it works.

Time for you to stop buying cheap plonk and buy something with more body, more satisfying, that will stay fresh in the fridge for a few days when opened.

Horses7 · 15/09/2025 20:46

Statistically you should live longer etc.
I more or less gave up over 15 years ago although I’ll have a small drink socially because there are few alternatives - most alcohol free wine (if available in a bar) is terrible and I don’t want anything fizzy or a fruit drink. I end up drinking lots of water

I wonder if the cheap stuff in supermarkets does have alcohol added, as someone suggested a couple of years ago. I stopped drinking cheaper wine a long time ago. Now I buy it at auction.

There is no doubt that the more expensive vintage wines - especially the French whites - I don't drink red - are far more satisfying.

I hear you so curious to follow this post.

There is definitely a reason why some wines are very expensive. One £50 bottle of the better stuff is far better than five cheaper ones. The expense makes you spread it out over more than one day, and if it is a good wine, it will be.

I learned that when I was travelling and hotels put your name on a bottle and brought it out at mealtimes if you stayed a few nights. Now I buy the best I can afford and it lasts in the fridge.

Common side effects of weight loss jabs apparently. Happened to a few of my friends!

AffableApple · 15/09/2025 21:14

You've done a pregnancy test, I assume?

No.

justasking111 · 15/09/2025 21:17

When eight girlfriends meeting for rich food dinners with cocktails, wine, became light lunches with jugs of iced water.

CallingElfRescue · 15/09/2025 21:18

I am exactly the same and I’m the same age as you. Just don’t fancy it at all!

greengagesummers · 15/09/2025 21:19

As an update to my post above, last night I had two reasonably large glasses of wine - one rosé and one red, of probably about 200ml each - and was awake for hours in the night feeling like I was spinning and going to chuck them back up! Felt like I’d drunk a bottle or two rather than two glasses! This morning I felt like I’d been run over by a truck. Can’t believe two glasses of wine can produce that effect on me these days. It just doesn’t feel fair….

I have been switching to nicer wine given that only have a glass at any one time these days, but I’m having to go very expensive before I even enjoy it, which is a bit counterproductive as all I want is to have a glass or two of mid-priced red with my dinner without it costing £40 or making me feel ill!

OdeToTheNorthWestWind · 15/09/2025 21:32

I'm way beyond the menopause and not on wli but have found myself gradually going off alcohol over the last few years. It feels like my taste buds have changed. I've never been a beer drinker but now find wine too acidic and cocktails too sweet. I stick to flavoured tonic water and soda these days and I'm fine with that.

justasking111 · 15/09/2025 21:53

My husband had a cider when we had lunch out recently. I had a taste, then a glug. It was icy cold and lovely . I'm going to order a cider next time.

That's exactly why I quit the wine. Headache, tired & rough the next day after only 2 glasses! Also I cannot sleep on wine! No idea why! The only thing I like is a cider now and again

BeAzureRaven · 16/09/2025 02:30

YES! I quit for about 2 years, maybe 15 years ago (age 48–I’m 65 now) bc I was trying to get my ex to quit (he had a problem with alcohol imo)
but then I started again because I love my 1-2 glasses of wine with dinner, and this past year aperol spritzes. Sometimes a g and t. But about 2 months ago I just wasn’t feeling it. I’d pour my lovely French rose, or make a spritz—take a sip or two and just dump the rest. Ordered a drink at my local restaurant yesterday (mainly bc the owner is a friend and wanted me to try it. Sometimes kind of spritz made with prosecco and st Germaine. I took a couple sips and gave it to my friend. Just didn’t want it. Why is this I wonder?

usedtobeprettybutImalrightnow · 16/09/2025 02:44

I stepped away from drinking following a traumatic bereavement (was worried I’d drown myself in it) and now when I have a glass of wine I find I struggle to physically process it, wake up boiling hot and anxious at 3am. Did six months of total
abstinence. Prior to knocking it off I could drink two bottles of wine and go to bed and sleep all night, no hangover next morning either (very bad sign, I know). So the knowledge I’m going to suffer outweighs the appeal. I also think, what was the point of that anyway? So am hoping this means I’m freeeeee. Heartening to hear it can just lose its allure, full stop. I think of all the money and brain cells I’ve wasted, argh.

spoonbillstretford · 16/09/2025 03:26

No, I'm 50 and still enjoy a glass of wine. But it is normally a glass or two. I can still put it away with colleagues or friends on occasion too. Any more regular drunken nights out stopped in my 20s.

It doesn't need alcohol added, it's more that with climate change they struggle to keep the alcohol level down.
