Dear god I have worms

I’ve taken 5ml of Ovex yesterday and can still feel the little bastards wriggling around. Can I take another shot to speed up the process?! Any tips for feeling more comfortable? What a mortifying experience!

You have to wait two weeks to repeat the second dose

dementedpixie · 04/12/2024 20:13

Ovex works by starving them so they will take a few days to die. Then repeat after 2 weeks

newandconfused5 · 04/12/2024 20:16

You poor thing.. I hope it works soon for you.

AudHvamm · 04/12/2024 20:18

Oh God I feel for you. I've had them once as an adult and it's horrible.

There's no good way of putting this but my mum told me to tape up my bumhole at night! Apparently that's when they like to wriggle out and lay their eggs so it can also help with breaking the life cycle before you take the 2nd dose. She told me to use the white zinc medical tape.

Fantina · 04/12/2024 20:18

It’s sooo common. But weirdly despite having lots of letters about nits at primary school, we never had one about worms even when I rang to report we had them. The good news is that it is easy to treat, make sure you hot wash your sheets/towels and wipe door handles etc.

Good luck, it’s also worth keeping ovex in stock at home, I did when my DC were little.

Darkdiamond · 04/12/2024 20:20

My daughter had worms and was beside herself the first night. She was fine the next night. I found worms much easier to treat than nits. It won't take the full 2 weeks for them to die, that's just a precaution. The doctor gave chlorine solution to wash my daughter's bum with every night in addition to the medication

Latenightreader · 04/12/2024 20:23

We went through this a couple of months ago. Just be very, very thankful that you can take ovex rather than pripsen, which was all that was available in the 80s...

Hot wash for bedding, wear pants at night, be careful with towels, and thud too shall pass!

gamerchick · 04/12/2024 20:24

Yeah it takes a few days. Just be thankful it's not Pripsen ..that stuff was sent from satan itself. Can still taste it.

Just make sure you take the second dose to catch the hatchlings.

CharlotteLucas3 · 04/12/2024 20:43

They just go on their own as long as you don't get the eggs in your mouth....they lay their eggs and then die. You just need to break the life cycle...don't need to take medication.

TheaBrandt · 04/12/2024 20:49

Oh god that pink drink. Still the most disgusting thing Ive ever tasted

Cookerhood · 04/12/2024 20:50

Ugh, I can taste it too.
It is possible to break the life cycle without medication, but difficult. The medication affects the worms, not you, so is very safe.

StopStartStop · 04/12/2024 20:53

Loads of Vaseline where you can feel them. Suffocation.

I agree: 3 DC through school & not one letter. When I spoke to a very experienced depute head teacher about DS having them for the 2nd time in a few months & how demented I was, she absolutely did not know what they were! They're more common than nits!

She looked it up in front of me online & was appalled. There was an 'information leaflet' + email issued the next day. Bloody horrible things.

Fantina · 04/12/2024 21:01

So much more common than nits and apparently things like sandpits can harbour them

Yes you do need to take the medication !
You can get urinary tract infections if you ignore.
You need to get rid of these asap, one of my 3 kids suffered a lot with worms ,so much worse for females as they spread into the vagina ,there is no way i would have watched her be in so much absolute discomfort, and done nothing ,dosing her with ovex sorted it pretty quickly every time.
Smearing vaseline on her anus at bedtime eased the discomfort a lot too.

ClassicStripe · 04/12/2024 21:19

Both times my DC have caught worms (years apart) I thought they were dying they screamed so much 😭 😢 💔. Horrible creatures.

justforthisnow · 04/12/2024 21:23

Pripsen and hatchlings. Omg, my childhood horrors are awakened.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 04/12/2024 21:36

Had a few run ins with the bastards.

Here's what my doctor said about the worming tablets.

It can take up to 5 days before you notice effects. For threadworms the recommended dosage of mebendazole is 5mg recommended and repeat after 2 weeks however mebendazole is used for 3 consecutive days to treat other types of worms so has obviously been safety tested for human consumption.

An increase in frequency increases the risk of side effects however taking multiple doses isn't necessarily unsafe but no point in taking the risks if it won't necessarily work faster for the type of worm you have if it is threadworm.

So my doctor said he can't recommend I take more doses but he can tell me the facts about the medication.

Blueberrymuffin8 · 04/12/2024 21:38

How old are kids who get worms? My kids are 7 and 8 and this sounds like a nightmare!

80smonster · 04/12/2024 21:42

My mum always said vaseline around bottom hole. They wriggle out into the vaseline which traps them and kills them, so you wipe away.

elozabet · 04/12/2024 21:46

Is Pripsen the name of that vile pink medicine. I can't even look at strawberry milkshake some 40'years later as it still makes me gag.
Worms are horrible but nobody ever talks about getting them today.

gamerchick · 04/12/2024 21:58

Yeah. 40 years on I can still taste it. No strawberries went anywhere near that stuff. I don't care what they say.

But it was effective. Talk about exploding shorts.

My kids have never had them either. I've been waiting as so many other parents had told me about them (tho not at same school or nursery). Mine are 7 and 4 and we've got away with it so far.
But my youngest gets nuts about once every three months, and I catch it every bloody time! They just love our curly hair. So swings and roundabouts

Hohofortherobbers · 04/12/2024 22:05

I recall a green liquid medicine we used to have as a child. It was utterly foul and made me sick Envy

Scutterbug · 04/12/2024 22:11

Ah pripsen. The most vile stuff! I remember sitting at the table gagging with my parents not letting us leave until it had gone. It was truly horrible stuff!
