To ask for positive stories of the Mirena coil?

Bearhunt468 · 25/11/2024 13:21

Just that! Thinking about the coil as I have endometriosis and heavy periods. Doctor thinks this will help as should stop periods. But only people I've known ended up with bleeding non stop.

Please tell me any positive stories if you are on this?

Thank you!

My friend had it for this reason and it worked.

Worked brilliantly for me. Heavy periods and they stopped within a few weeks. No period for 5 years now. Bliss.

Hankunamatata · 25/11/2024 13:23

Love mine. Got it as part of hrt in my 40s and I'd wish I'd got one years ago. Stopped periods after 6 months - though dod have irregular bleeding to begin with. Now at the most I have some light spotting sometimes

FedUpandEatingChocolate · 25/11/2024 13:23

Mine never fully stopped with it, and I had 3 months of spotting at the start, but ... It was great! I had it for the same reason and it was brilliant.

However, it became dislodged so I had it removed. But it was great whilst it lasted!

Imperrysmum · 25/11/2024 13:23

Ive been on it for 10 years (changed at 5 year mark) its been fab. 0 problems. Went from very heavy periods (flooding the bed at night) to very light pain free ones.

0 problems, fantastic!

Pepperama · 25/11/2024 13:25

Best thing ever. Had so many issues before and now they’re all gone. Am done with kids so will just keep a Mirena till I’m past menopause age

KhakiShaker · 25/11/2024 13:25

This was my worry too. I’d heard all sorts of horror stories but I eventually got so sick of the heavy periods and 24/7 bleeding I decided to give it a try.

I’ve not looked back - I barely get a period now and it’s great. I sometimes get a day or two where I need to wear a panty liner but that’s it. Honestly I wish I’d done it years ago.

Usernamesarenoteasy · 25/11/2024 13:26

I tried a mirena. Can't really comment too much though, as after about 10 days during my first period, I went to the toilet and the bloody thing fell out.
I was told this could happen with a really heavy period, but mine wasn't heavy at all. It just fell out....
I was not impressed.

ToffeePennie · 25/11/2024 13:26

I’ve only had mine since June and it takes a minimum of 6 months to fully settle, but it seems to be doing the job!!
even though my periods are still there, they’re very much not as heavy/not as painful and I’m not stuck to the bathroom floor vomiting 7 days every 3 weeks!! So I would suggest you go for it and see!

Partyatno10 · 25/11/2024 13:28

I've had the mirena coil for the past 11 years (on my 2nd one, due to come out) due to previously having v.heavy periods. My periods haven't stopped completely, but now they're extremely light (only panty liner needed). When I first had it put in, I bled for around 3 weeks though. I found it more painful having it removed than inserted, and had some cramps for a few days after both insertion and removal. was well worth it imo as I hardly bleed now. I know a couple of other people with it, both don't bleed at all.

Tunnocksmallow · 25/11/2024 13:28

I’ve had a mirena for roughly 20 years now (obviously changed) and I love it. Periods stopped almost straight away. I get odd day of spotting now and again, but nothing significant.

I wouldn’t be without it.

curlycurlymoo · 25/11/2024 13:29

I had it. Was fine. No periods for the whole time.

ExpertlyDecorated · 25/11/2024 13:29

I went from heavy flooding to no periods, no side effects. Took a few months to settle but after that it was fantastic and I have sailed through menopause (which may or may not be related).

suki1964 · 25/11/2024 13:32

I can give you a positive

I had my first one inserted 30 years ago, when they were first being trialed for endometriosis , I was just 30, childfree and begging for a hysterectomy

Never looked back.

I had my last one removed this year aged 60, sailed through the menopause

Im not going to say it was all plain sailing, the first 48 hrs after insertion, the cramps were agony, my consultant advised me to take the day off when I had my first fitted, and by lunchtime I was on the phone to DH to come get me.Last one fitted ( on Christmas Eve of all days, 10 years ago ) Dh had to pull the car over while I threw up. I had some dreadful removals, some have been as quick as "cough" and its out, another I ended up needing a LA on a DCU

BUT added together its been about a week of discomfort for 20+ years of being pain free, and after 6 months of just some monthly spotting, I never saw a period again

It saved my womb, my sanity and my marriage

kelspin · 25/11/2024 14:04

I've had mine for about 2.5yrs after putting it off for a long time as I had the same concerns as you! It's honestly been great though, I had light periods for about 6 months, then they stopped for a year and now I just have very light spotting for a few days a month. I don't suffer with endometriosis but I had very heavy periods before. I would definitely recommend giving it a try.

DramaAlpaca · 25/11/2024 14:23

I had one for heavy, erratic periods when I was in perimenopause. I don't have a bad thing to say about it and it stopped my periods completely. I have no idea how old I was when I went through menopause as I wasn't having periods.

I have another one now as the progesterone part of HRT and it's great. I did spot for a few months, but it's settled down completely now.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 25/11/2024 14:31

I used to have horrifically heavy and painful periods. I've had a Mirena for 20 years now - the most recent one my doctor put in, she said would be the last. I think that was two years ago when I was 53. I think it's a brilliant device. I can recall virtually passing out during the first couple of days of my worst periods.

fivebyfivebuffy · 25/11/2024 14:36

Loitering - I have a copper coil and they want to swap it to mirena when I have a laparoscopy

BarnacleBeasley · 25/11/2024 14:41

I got one 6 months ago and it hasn't (yet) stopped my periods, but they went from really heavy and every 22 days, to lighter (though more prolonged) and approx every 26 days, which was an improvement overall. This month it's just a bit of spotting and 33 days, so I am hopeful they'll stop altogether. I have been getting quite bad cramps when my period is due, though, which I didn't before.

Oral progesterone didn't work to stop my periods so I wasn't that optimistic, but so far it's much better.

Phineyj · 25/11/2024 14:51

I'm on my second one (so have had them total of 10 years).

No fuss, no drama, endo sorted.

I had all the ops under a general/sedation with an experienced gynae though.

Not sure I'd trust a GP!

shellyleppard · 25/11/2024 14:54

I had extremely heavy periods, flooding everywhere. Had the mirena coil and after a few weeks no periods. For five whole years!!! Only had it removed when a blood test showed that I was officially post menopausal

Fancytrike · 25/11/2024 14:57

It has been the best health decision I ever made. I think I had a few weeks settling in (spotting) but then 15 years without a period for a couple of 10 min appointments and a few seconds discomfort on fitting. Absolutely 100% life-changing. I wish I’d had one at 18…

WalterdelaMare · 25/11/2024 15:00

I had extremely heavy periods, clots the size of my palm, flooding and pretty debilitating. I have adenomyosis which combined with peri, was not good.

I had a Mirena put in almost 2 years ago and it’s been fantastic. Completely stopped the bleeding and no issues whatsoever. Having it inserted was a doddle too.
