To ask for positive stories of the Mirena coil?

Just that! Thinking about the coil as I have endometriosis and heavy periods. Doctor thinks this will help as should stop periods. But only people I've known ended up with bleeding non stop.

Please tell me any positive stories if you are on this?

Thank you!

I’ve had a mirena for roughly 20 years now (obviously changed) and I love it. Periods stopped almost straight away. I get odd day of spotting now and again, but nothing significant.

I wouldn’t be without it.

Do you mind if I ask if it can be used in 50s also?

They are a miracle invention. I tired them in my 30s but they were too painful.
Now in late 40s I use them for HRT.

My periods haven't stopped, I still get PMT and bleed and cramp. But no where near as much as I did.

Just in case it's relevant I have prolapsed uterus and can still cope with the Mirena.

I guess so? I’m only 45. I’d done having my babies by then. My mum and auntie have had them and they’re now in their 60’s to help theough menopause, so I’d say yes. But ask your GP or practice nurse is best.

Of course. You can have one as long as your cervix is accessible.

Best thing ever for me, been over a decade since I last had a period. Yes insertion and removal are uncomfortable, but for me it's been a very small price to pay

Mercury2702 · 25/11/2024 15:35

I’m on my second and no issues! Had super heavy periods and now have none. I’ve had spotting a few times but nothing more.

what I will say though is after the first removal I had to wait a few weeks for a 2nd as they only had time to do a simple removal and the bleeding was horrific but was told that was withdrawal from the first being removed. Once the 2nd was fitted, again no issues. However I had my first fitted not long after I’d had my son and it was painless, the 2nd was 4 years post birth and I had to have local anaesthetic injected into my cervix. They also cut the strings too short and the strings have gone inside my cervix. I’ve had an internal ultrasound that confirms it’s still in position so removal of my 2nd is going to be a bit more complicated and will need to be a gynae referral which is a pain in the arse so it’s better for the strings to be left longer

I had very light periods with my first one. No issues getting it removed and haven’t had a period since I had my second one inserted following birth of DC2.

Fluteytooting · 25/11/2024 15:51

I was worried about getting mine but after failing repeatedly to sort out my low iron problem due to heavy periods I eventually had one put in. It’s been an absolute game changer and I wax lyrical about it to all my female friends! I’ve had no side effects and no period for 2 years now. Bliss!

VoyagerOfTheTeenYears · 25/11/2024 16:00

I got mine for progesterone HRT. Had had the copper coil before and perimenopause periods were getting annoying (heavier and more frequent). I did spot a lot for about 6 months - not heavy but mostly continuous and I did get a bit fed up of that. Since then it’s been amazing. No periods at all.

Thanks everyone. Think I just need to go for it!
