Staying at in laws over Christmas and dreading having to deal with this when sleeping in someone else’s bedsheets.

I can't believe people are recommending the OP takes a medication rather than just talking to her mother in law.
Weird.

She didn’t ask for how to talk to her mother in law though. She asked for how to avoid leaking on the sheets. They are different questions. If she had asked how to broach the subject with her mother in law, we would have suggested different things. Do you struggle with reading comprehension generally?

CatStoleMyChocolate · 24/11/2024 21:11

Not everyone wants to talk to their MIL about their periods!

OP, you can order noresthisterone online from Boots - they will screen to see if there’s any reason you shouldn’t be prescribed it but if you start taking it a set number of days before your period, it should delay your period until you stop taking it. I have done this for holidays/weekends away.

Or you could ask your GP for transexaemic acid (I may not be spelling this right) which should lighten your period to a more manageable level.

To be honest, if your periods are this heavy I’d suggest talking to your GP anyway as you may be low in iron, and if it’s disrupting your life (which it is if you’re worried about dealing with it away from home), there are options to look at both the symptoms and the causes - you don’t have to suffer in silence.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 24/11/2024 21:12

Two towels, in a T shape. And period pants . Sleep on a bed mat...like a dry night.

Untery · 24/11/2024 21:12

Yes I am low in iron I have had this checked and trying to deal with it

Thanks. A few of these things never heard of - the medication. I have bought some period pants but not tried them, but the thick part which looks like it absorbs looks really short iyswim like it doesn’t cover the whole pant which I what I feel like I need. Haven’t thought of tena, maybe that would be an option. Have considered setting an alarm before so may need to do that. It’s a flight away travel so not sure about bringing mattress protector with me

I got one of these to use on holiday with my family when my children could be reliably dry at night. They fold up to a smaller size. No leaks.

No different advice to others but solidarity op. It’s miserable isn’t it?!

sunshinechaser · 24/11/2024 21:12

Are you on the pill? You could keep taking it and avoid your period.

happysnails · 24/11/2024 21:13

I would buy incontinence pants

There's such a range in period pants - some have bigger gussets that others.

I'd also pack a towel - even a little microfibre one to like on. Or a bathrobe to wear.

So period cup + pad + period pants
Lying on towel.

I should also take my own advice as my periods are so heavy even with a pad and pants I've made a mess of my favourite bedding last month.

Untery · 24/11/2024 21:14

Are incontinence pants basically an almost entirely padded pant?

OP posts:
soupfiend · 24/11/2024 21:15

Not just you

Hang upside like a bat, seems like the only possible way to be honest

BeMintBee · 24/11/2024 21:15

Modibody period pants have the padded bit extend from the top of the from to the top of the back if that makes sense. I wear two pairs of their overnight period pants (usually one briefs style and then boxer style ones over the top) I prefer the boxer ones as it avoids any side leaks.

LucyLocketLovesPollyPocket · 24/11/2024 21:16

I've found the flow direction is dictated by pubic hair or lack of and position in sleeping. When I'm heavy (all checked out, it's just fuck off heavy) I wear a pad as normal then a pad horizontal at the front and back. I also have a mattress protector, plus salt at the ready.

Untery · 24/11/2024 21:16

Modibody sound like they might help then.

OP posts:
Vettrianofan · 24/11/2024 21:16

Sleep on an old towel.

Needmorelego · 24/11/2024 21:18

@Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot yes I know she didn't ask how to speak to her mother in law.....but I just think it's crazy to suggest starting a medication (that she's never heard of so obviously hasn't taken before) that could have side effects (all medications have that possibility) rather than just talking to her mother in law.
Her mother in law could have a massive pile of mattress protectors, spare sheets, industrial strength stain remover etc and might just shrug "oh well nevermind....stick the sheets in the machine and I'll get some clean ones".

Dragonsandcats · 24/11/2024 21:18

I use thick pad with period pads on top of another thick pad with period pants

AntiHop · 24/11/2024 21:19

transexamic acid is magic stuff. If you can't get to the gp, you can get it through online pharmacies. Take the maximum dose.

ElvenElf · 24/11/2024 21:19

Untery · 24/11/2024 21:08

Yes sometimes it seems to end up on duvet which is so annoying , I don’t understand how this happens

Fleecy pyjama bottoms help stop it escaping too alongside some of the other suggestions. They might help with the duvet worry a bit

Needmorelego · 24/11/2024 21:19

Also seems odd the OP hasn't tried some of these before.......

stichguru · 24/11/2024 21:20

Will they have a washing machine? I use reusable pads and a little leak most nights reduced to one leak every few months.

StillAtTheRestaurant · 24/11/2024 21:21

Needmorelego · 24/11/2024 21:07

I can't believe people are recommending the OP takes a medication rather than just talking to her mother in law.
Weird.

Number one, where does the OP say she's staying with her MIL? In-laws could mean any family members on her partner's side.
And number two, you have no idea what her relationship is with these in-laws. So maybe just wheesht unless you can help with her actual problem.

Lovemusic82 · 24/11/2024 21:22

Sorry your going through such heavy periods, it’s just awful and something I don’t miss (finally had a hysterectomy this year).
When away I would wear 2 night time pads, period pants and a pair of cycling shorts to hold everything in place. I have also used the bed wetting pads too (to sleep on).

Owmyelbow · 24/11/2024 21:22

Moon cup and an honour your flow night time pad. Never felt so secure!

okydokethen · 24/11/2024 21:23

Period pants are life changing over night.

But you have to get the ones that go all the way up the back of the gusset. Modi bodi heavy are brill. No pad or tampon needed
