I think I have got a UTI. I don’t think it’s cystitis as I’ve had that before but I have pain in my lower right side and back and it especially hurts to pee or walk.i’m not sure what medication to buy/take. TIA

You may need antibiotics.

Mabs49 · 10/10/2024 23:46

might be a kidney infection.

definitely doctor first thing in the morning. You will need antibiotics.

if it is, you need to rest and take care of yourself really really well. If you don’t they can come back and become recurrent and very hard to shift. Take this seriously. Good diet. No alcohol for 2 months. Let it all heal. Talking from experience.

LittleMsSunny · 10/10/2024 23:46

some Pharmacists can give antibiotics without seeing the GP so could try a Pharmacy first.

Crispynoodle · 10/10/2024 23:57

Very specific antibiotics I believe you can get them over the counter now

sleepwouldbenice · 10/10/2024 23:58

I had uti recently
Doc refused to treat as it's a pharmacy issue now
Which is probably best as quicker
Keep drinking water / cranberry but also go to pharmacy

NorthantsNewbie · 11/10/2024 00:01

Definitely get yourself to a pharmacy ASAP but keep an eye on other symptoms that could indicate infection - temperature, chills, dizziness etc. My UTI developed rapidly during a work day and the pharmacy closed before I could get there - called 111 who referred me to A&E and I ended up being kept in for three days with severe kidney infection and suspected sepsis. I’ve had UTIs before and thought 111 were overreacting.

Ahhhgrophobia · 11/10/2024 00:06

what are the antibiotics can I get them off amazon

StudioCreate · 11/10/2024 00:09

You can't buy antibiotics. You need to call 111 to get some prescribed over the phone or see a pharmacist in the morning.

Savoretti · 11/10/2024 00:14

Cystitis IS a UTI

Can I call 111 just now? If I call a pharmacist in the morning my prescription will take time to process so should I phone now to get it processed quicker

itsmeits · 11/10/2024 00:21

You can ring 111 and get it sent to a local 24 hr pharmacy, Or go to your local 24hr pharmacy and see if they can help.

Ahhhgrophobia · 11/10/2024 00:33

I am on the phone to 111. I am really worried. They asked for my pain on a pain scale. I don’t know what number to give it. It’s not a 10 I don’t think? But it’s bad enough that I can’t walk or pee without excruciating pain.

OP posts:
itsmeits · 11/10/2024 00:35

6/7 and a 10 then urinating is my standard answer

itsmeits · 11/10/2024 00:37

They may suggest A+E so be honest about how you are.

Ahhhgrophobia · 11/10/2024 00:38

I forgot to mention to the woman that it feels like the pain has gone into my leg. Am on hold to speak to the nurse

OP posts:
Ahhhgrophobia · 11/10/2024 02:12

Nurse finally phoned me back I dont know why I bother I felt like she was quite blunt and dismissive.
She said the clinician is really busy and that it sounds like a UTI and they’re not coming out overnight for “something like that” because it’s “not serious” and they’ll only come out if I need to be rushed to hospital and she told me I need to figure it out myself even though I have severe agoraphobia live by myself and don’t have family support so the fact I can’t walk and am in extreme pain doesn’t matter to them I don’t know what to do don’t know what the point is anymore she said phone the general practitioners in the morning just feel fobbed off

Pharmacy may not give antibiotics if it's more than a simple uncomplicated uti which it sounds like, so best ringing drs first thing for a same day appointment or go to urgent care in morning

Oblomov24 · 11/10/2024 02:48

I've had 3 lots of antibiotics for a UTI now for 3 weeks that hasn't gone away. Each time the urine sample tested shows a mild non-descript 'infection' but not enough to be specifically itemised.

Oblomov24 · 11/10/2024 02:50

I've tried drinking loads of water in an attempt to flush it through, and taking cystitis sachets aswell and I just can't seem to wash it away.

Ahhhgrophobia · 11/10/2024 02:54

I haven’t got cystitis it doesn’t burn it’s another type of UTI she fobbed me off told me to phone practitioners tomorrow for a urine sample @Oblomov24 I didn’t realise that could happen that’s made me worried now

@Ahhhgrophobia
I get my antibiotics from Boots now
More expensive but I don't mind as so much more convenient
I just do it online and then pick it up when they're ready

Superdrug do it too
I've got a UTI now too
They suck

solice84 · 11/10/2024 03:19

I also get the d mannose tablets from boots
Again expensive but they take the edge off while waiting for the antibiotics to kick in
They're meant to be preventative but I stupidly let my guard down and forgot to take them this time

A UTI is the term for an infection anywhere in your urinary tract, so kidneys, bladder or urethera.
Cystitis is a non medical term, but basically refers to a UTI that is in the bladder (the most common type by far). A lot of the time people say they 'just have cystitis and not a uti', but they are one and the same.
A UTI in the bladder will cause pain and all the symptoms you describe, if it spreads to the kidneys then you are likely to feel more unwell eg high temperature and bad back pain in the kidney area (this needs urgent medical attention).
Regardless, if you need treatment which it sounds like you do and you cannot leave the house you could either use the superdrug or boots websites and get the antibiotics delivered or you could use a private GP service such as push doctor.
It's bloody horrible and often not taken very seriously by GPs in my experience.

That’s not strictly true - cystitis is a medical term that simply means ‘inflammation in the bladder’. One of the (common) causes of inflammation is infection, but you can indeed have cystitis (inflammation) without infection. HTH.

Apologies, yes. I suppose you can refer to interstitial cystitis etc.
I guess what I mean to say is that it is an often misused term and the general public often seem to think that cystitis is some sort of mild type of UTI that doesn't need medical attention when in fact it is the most common type of UTI.
Also the notion that because they couldn't find a specific type of bug when testing the urine leaves people thinking it must not have been an infection at all, when in fact it's likely that the bacteria was just not able to be picked up on the culture.
All in all I just think it's a problem that is poorly understood and all too often brushed off. It can be incredibly debilitating and I think it's important that more is done to help people.
