Does anyone else suffer from this?!

I get it at least once a month, and have done since mid teens. Sometimes after a poop or orgasm, and the pain is bloody unbearable.

An hour and a half I was up for in the middle of the night, resorted to a hot bath which did not help. In the end I took painkillers which helped - not had it this bad in a while! I was in tears and it felt like my bum hole was going to drop out.

Other than that, no idea what actually causes this :(

Ahhh Javelin Arse!

It's a mystery

dothehokeycokey · 13/09/2024 23:10

Oh my yes it's absolutely friggin horrendous.

So hard to explain to dh how bad it is especially when I actually can't speak for about five mins while it's kicking off

RightOnTheEdge · 13/09/2024 23:12

I used to but I've not had it for years 🤞
Mine only used to last for a minute though.

WhereTheHeckAreMyGlasses · 13/09/2024 23:14

Mine has just gone after nearly two weeks, I think caused by a mixture of stress and mild constipation. Agony when trying to have a poo, and randomly at other times in between. I think it must be the big nerve which serves the pelvis, but what exactly sets it off is a bit of a mystery.

Watchinglost · 13/09/2024 23:39

I get it every time I ovulate.

PollyDactyl · 13/09/2024 23:42

Menopause cured mine 👍

But yeah, HIDEOUS.

PollyDactyl · 13/09/2024 23:43

I am convinced it is linked with endo. Who would be a woman, eh.

Whenisitlunchtime · 13/09/2024 23:50

Yep - for me - endometriosis. Agony. Menopause, not the surgery 3 yrs ago, finally stopped the pain. As @PollyDactyl says, who indeed.

margegunderson · 14/09/2024 00:43

I get this - much less often these days. Things that help are sitting on something like a tennis ball that puts pressure on your anus and blue inhaler is also supposed to relieve it (didn't for me). Having a poo often relieved it. Mine were usually when I'd been running (tight pelvic floor maybe) or just randomly in the middle of the night.

I get this when I’m on my period and when I ovulate.
Had it since I was a teen.

roses2 · 14/09/2024 07:37

I thought this was a sharp poo poking me - is it not???

Same

Iwontlethtesungodownonme · 14/09/2024 07:43

Menopause cured mine too. I think that is the only good thing about the menopause.

Loveautumnhatewinter · 14/09/2024 07:47

Think it can be linked to fluctuations in hormones. I read though that if you relax and push down, almost like you’re trying to fart, it eases it. I tried it mid attack and it really helped.

Scandiviews1 · 14/09/2024 07:47

I obviously assumed for ages it was some horrendous intermittent tumour in my bottom until I read about javelin arse on MN. Happens randomly at night and could go on for 30 minutes. I use the blue Inhaler, paracetamol and then try and do a poo. Often one comes out eventually and that sometimes settles things. What we women have to go through though!!!!

Deadringer · 14/09/2024 07:54

I never found a cure for it sadly I would just breathe through it (bit like labour) and try and distract myself. It really is the most horrendous pain and like you op I often got it after an orgasm. I have read that if you sit on a hard surface it helps, but personally I think having painkillers to hand is the best solution.

It didn't cure mine. I don't get it very often, but have had it a couple of times lately.

PetrichorSoul · 14/09/2024 07:55

I used to get it when I had PCOS.

Going keto cured both for me.

Flashcardsagain · 14/09/2024 08:01

Always on ovulation like clockwork. I've heard pushing like you're doing a poo helps but not tried it as it tends to happen when I'm doing a presentation in front of 300 people and I just have to breathe through and smile

Merrilydancing · 14/09/2024 08:03

I went on the mini pill and that really helped.

banivani · 14/09/2024 08:24

I have this. No endometriosis or PCOS. Appeared randomly when I was in my 30s I think. For a while quite often, say once every month or two months? Always at night at maybe 2 in the morning. Have had maybe one or two attacks in daytime in total but not as severe as at night. I also thought it might be serious but careful googling (got to choose your search terms right) led me to a US forum discussion that calmed me down ;) After I had it for a few years I happened to be listening to a podcast (Swedish) and the one fella was talking about how he had it and very funnily describing why one wouldn’t want to go to the doctor with it, and he had discovered what it was called by googling and finding a blog post from one of Sweden’s most famous celebrities who also has it. Anyway, it def affects men and women.

AlwaysKindaKnewYoudBeTheDeathOfMe · 14/09/2024 08:27

Gently bear down like you're doing a poo. Helps massively.

MrsGrumpyKnickers · 19/09/2024 20:09

It’s such a relief to read about others having this. I originally found out through a MN article about arse daggers - javelin arse is a new term to me but fits the bill!
Mine first started during my second pregnancy about 16 years ago. I go through phases where I don’t have anything for 2-3 months then I have it for weeks on and off, night and day. It can regularly wake me up. It can happen during the day, sitting or standing. I figured I don’t get any bleeding so it can’t be too serious. I haven’t thought to take pain killers (not sure why not) and usually just try to breathe through it - the pain can make me feel faint at times. Posts such as this help enormously to stop me worrying. NB been on progesterone only pill for years - it hasn’t helped.

Needsomesunnyweather · 24/02/2025 19:48

So grateful to this . I thought I was the only one and I've had this for years. It will stop me in my tracks and wake me up if I'm asleep . Absolute agony feels like someone has opened me up and stabbed me so javelin arse sums this up really well

GrimTimes1 · 24/02/2025 21:57

I posted about this not too long ago.
It's been happening to me on a horrendous scale during my periods for about a year.
Recently went to the dr and got a most unsatisfactory response initially, but have since spoken with an experienced actually qualified GP who thinks I may have a type of endo. I'm on a waiting list to be seen by gynae but in the mean time I've started on the mini pill to see if it helps.....
