For over one week now I have had a constant, low level urge to urinate. When I go, I produce a small or very small amount. Literally two minutes later the urge is back. At night, the sensation is unbearable... I have spent most nights of the last week up all night, on and off the toilet constantly, crying in frustration.

I wouldn't describe the sensation as pain - it's pressure, and tingling. Bizarrely, I also have tingling in my feet/ soles - this is more of a long term, but on/off problem and has kept me up at night sporadically for the last year or two. Right now I cannot stop visiting the toilet, the sensation in my bladder is so uncomfortable and my feet/legs are all tingly. My whole body feels horribly agitated. I don't have a temperature.

To try and treat this, I have tried the OTC sachets for UTIs, and then was prescribed a one-off sachet antibiotic (Monurol), which I took on Saturday evening. I've only felt worse since taking that. I'm not convinced this is a UTI as I have no burning when I pee, no temperature or pain, no cloudy or smelly urine. But it's becoming unbearable and I can't really go out or do anything as I'm tied to the toilet. I have managed to make a GP appointment for Wednesday morning but in the meantime, any ideas? I'm so uncomfortable and worried :(

I don’t have an answer for you but that sounds awful :( I hope the GP can help. Any family history of thyroid issues, diabetes, pernicious anaemia anything like that? I’m guessing here, I am not a doctor.

TheUndoing · 19/08/2024 13:04

Not to be at all alarmist but I think it would be helpful to rule out something rare but potentially serious like Cauda Equina Syndrome given your symptoms aren’t just urinary but seem to be affecting your lower limbs.

EatCrow · 19/08/2024 13:07

Starting with the basics, do you drink caffeine? Alcohol?

imisscashmere · 19/08/2024 13:15

Grateful for the responses.

I don’t drink alcohol. I have one coffee (from a cafe) every morning.

My mother has a thyroid condition but I have just had a blood test which said my thyroid is fine. I have “slight” anaemia according to the Dr - ferritin level is 10. I have been taking Spatone for 2/3 weeks now as I don’t get on with iron tablets.

Pernicious anemia isn't the same as iron deficit anemia, it's a neurological condition caused by the body's inability to absolutely B12 (a deficiancy can also be caused by dietary restrictions).

It sounds like you need to see your Dr again.
I had awful , agitating urinary urgency caused by vaginally atrophy, but it didn't make my feet tingle.

TheLurpackYears · 19/08/2024 13:20

Don't start taking B12 supplements on the off chance, they will skew any blood test results you get, and check it isn't in any supplements you currently take, you need to give about 3 months for it to leave you system.

longdistanceclaraclara · 19/08/2024 13:27

Why haven't you been given a proper course of antibiotics?

Thank you - my B12 is fine according to my recent blood test.

would I know if I had vaginal atrophy? I don’t have any discomfort inside my vagina.

Why haven't you been given a proper course of antibiotics?

I can’t swallow big capsules so the 3 day course the pharmacy dishes out wouldn’t work for me. A 111 Dr prescribed the one off sachet for me instead. It’s almost 48 hours since I took it and zero improvement, so I really don’t think it will do anything.

I could ask for a long course of antibiotics when I see the GP on Wednesday. I really feel like that won’t help me though.

I used to suffer this all the time when I entered the menopause. I had all the tests etc as it drove me mad. I took D -Mannose as recommended by a friend - the relief came within a day. I cant recommend them enough

dbeuowlxb173939 · 19/08/2024 14:07

I don't think you should wait until Wednesday OP. Give 111 a call now.
With the tingling sensation affecting your legs and feet as well this could be a nerve issue such as cauda equina syndrome and really needs checking out asap or you could end up with worse problems.
Really stress the feet & leg symptoms as well as bladder issues when you talk to them.

rbe78 · 19/08/2024 14:42

I have had something similar on and off for years now. Doctor was no help, told me it must all be in my head...
Eventually I stumbled across something called interstitial cystitis, which is the closest I can get to self-diagnosing.

Apparently there are different triggers, but for me it is being dehydrated, so I am religious about drinking water.

Bladder pain syndrome (interstitial cystitis)

Find out about bladder pain syndrome (BPS), also called interstitial cystitis, where you have pelvic pain and problems peeing.

Thank you. I’m 37 and have wondered if it could possibly be early menopause related. I’m definitely a lot drier down there than I used to be.

A pharmacy gave me some D Mannose (with a different brand name) and I have taken it for four or five days now.

Thank you, I appreciate you flagging this. My husband has managed to get me a private consultation with a gynaecologist tomorrow (I don’t think he could bear another night of me crying and up every two minutes!)

I will definitely stress the tingling. It has been going on much longer but when I’m laying there at night it’s the same odd and deeply unpleasant sensation in my feet and bladder/ pelvic area. When I google the condition you mention it sounds much more severe than what I’m experiencing so I’m not panicking yet. Just miserable!

I had something like this and the GP was very helpful. She prescribed me some tables, referred me to the bowel and bladder nurse and forcefully told me not to put up with it.

All of the above really helped and It did eventually just sort itself out after about 9 months or so :

nocoolnamesleft · 19/08/2024 17:32

I'm also worried about cauda equina. Which is an A&E right now type of emergency, to avoid permanent nerve damage. Please go and get checked out today.

Im really glad you’re being seen. Cauda Equina is pretty rare so I’m hoping it isn’t that. It might be something so simple as a weird non-CE nerve entrapment/ irritation of mechanical or viral cause.

The symptoms are pretty unusual and distinctive so I hope you get answers soon. And a good night’s sleep.

Uqora works for me better than anything.
I have it shipped to my door.
I take two capsules a day and drink a little sachet mixed with water every other day.
It’s made an enormous difference with my overactive bladder symptoms and I haven’t had a UTI in two years.
And no - I’m not affiliated with the company in any way.

I get this a lot, almost itching all done my legs and a need to pee all through the night. I do have thyroid issues and am on HRT. Never found a cause.

Crispynoodle · 19/08/2024 23:23

You need to see the GP this symptom can be many things even an indicator for diabetes

You can get it online at uqora dot com.
Their website explains everything about it.
I’m in the US but I’m pretty sure it’s available in the UK. I hope so.
I’m sorry - I had to step away for a bit.
