Thickened endometrium

Hi everyone,

I've just had my test results back from a scan I had yesterday and it says I have slightly thickened endometrium! I've obviously googled and read the worst before the doctors have even phoned me!!

I'm 36 and had 3 children, does anyone have any experience of this? X

Going through exact same. How did you get on?

queenroo · 17/10/2024 14:08

Hiya, I had a hysteroscopy in the end so a surgeon could have a better look and take a sample for biopsy, after the operation he said there was nothing there to worry about and my biopsy results also came back clear just showed a small polyp which might explain the bleeding, I haven't had bleeding for 2 months now. But he said it's very common to have the bleeding in between and could be hormones just playing up x

That’a great news! I’ve been pretty much spotting off and on (mostly on) since mid July. Had a scan on Friday (not internal) which showed thickened endometrium so GP has put me on the 2 week pathway which has done nothing for my anxiety as I’m sure you can imagine. Do you know how thick your lining was at the beginning?

Yes I was the same got myself sooo worked up and anxious/ill over it!! Everyone told me not to stress but I think it's just natural to. Mine was 19mm but the surgeon said that was only borderline thick and depends on which point of your cycle you're in. Most common thing is just a polyp which is harmless and will make the lining thickened, are you pre or post menopausal? Do you have any other symptoms?

No other symptoms other than the bleeding. Although I have had night sweats and awful anxiety since trying the mini pill in September. Came off it at the start of this week as I think its sending me crazy. My lining was 15mm but because of the bleeding I don’t know what stage of my cycle I’m in so don’t know if thats normal or not. I’m 37 so not menopausal but have been thinking I could be peri for a while.

queenroo · 17/10/2024 19:30

If that's the case I honestly would not worry, my doctor and surgeon told me there would be other symptoms if anything to worry about, sounds like the mini pill has made things a bit unbalanced. The pill gave me terrible anxiety too years ago so haven't taken it since.

If you were post menopausal and having bleeding they would rush you through as urgent to be checked out but pre menopausal is such a low risk they don't stress. This is all what the doctors told me anyway.

My doctor has put me through as a red flag 2 week referral but I think only because anything else would take forever to get an appointment. I’m not coping very well this week and wish I’d never touched the pill again so that maybe this anxiety wouldn’t be just as bad. I can’t take anything to stop the bleeding either as I’m having gallbadder surgery next weekend so they can’t give me any more hormones until 4 weeks post op because of clot risk! Also not knowing if I’m going to get an appointment this side of my op because I’m not going to be fit for one for a while afterwards. t’s just a lot at the minute and my brain just goes to worst case scenario.

queenroo · 17/10/2024 20:22

It's so hard to be calm and think rationally when feeling anxious, all you can do is remind yourself that it will pass, and you will get everything sorted and be feeling good again. Some times things feel just too much all at once don't they, they did for me whilst waiting for my operation. Just a day at a time, try not to think too far ahead just think of the present day x

Thank you for your kind words. It’s a very lonely place to be and even though I have an amazing husband no one can understand unless they’ve been through it. Life’s just been a series of “if I can just get through this” lately whats one more 🙈

Fenellapitstop · 17/10/2024 21:06

I'm currently waiting on biopsy results, had the dildocam yesterday and been told there's slight thickening. I had my ovaries removed a year ago due to dodgy cysts. But still dealing with painful sex and occasional bleeding. The worrying and waiting is crap x

TheWholeShackShimmies · 17/10/2024 21:18

I had years of thickened uterine lining and recurring polyps (kept having them removed via hysteroscopies but they grew back). The lining was around 24mm. When I was first told I googled and completely convinced myself it was malignant, I was in such a state was told it was ok.

In the end I had a uterine ablation to reduce the lining but then found out actually I have endometriosis and have been told this may have been the reason for the thickened lining and polyps.

SlightlyJaded · 17/10/2024 21:21

I had this. Got myself into a complete and utter panic about it whilst waiting two weeks for the hysteroscopy.

It was fine.

I was told it's pretty common and whilst it CAN be an indicator of cancer, it most often isn't.

SpillerGlitter · 17/10/2024 21:57

Very reassuring seeing that so many others have went through it and been ok. Well as ok as you can be for constantly having your lady parts poked and prodded by strangers. The waiting is the worst. I’m not even at the results stage yet. If I could just find out what/when my appointment is it would take some pressure off. Gallbladder surgery in 10 days which I have paid £7000 for after waiting 26 months on the NHS waiting list and giving up so ideally I’d like to have whatever it is over and done with before that instead of having to get it done during recovery.

Fenellapitstop · 06/11/2024 18:42

My results are finally back, no cancerous or pre cancerous cells but the gynaecologist reckons I should stop hrt as it's causing the bleeding. I've been off it over 3 weeks and feel terrible

Amazing news! My bleeding stopped a few days before my gallbladder surgery but started again a couple days after it. It lasted about 6 days and was light and has since stopped. I hope its settling itself, still no word of gynae appointment. I have been in hospital this last 5 days though after complications after the gallbladder removal.

TippledPink · 07/11/2024 12:13

Going through this currently, had the scans that said thickened lining and now waiting on gynaecologist to get in contact, I was referred a few weeks back. Bit worried to hear you all had two week pathways and I am still here a few months after first reporting it with no treatment yet. I am bleeding 2.5 weeks out of the month and it is really getting me down now. I can't put up with it much longer. Please say there's an end to it!

I am on the 2 week pathway but its been almost 4 weeks and I haven’t even got an appointment!

Hey everyone 👋🏻

I am also extremely worried having had my scan yesterday, during it the sonographer told me I had one polyp.. and seemed pretty adamant it was just a polyp. Didn’t mention anything else at all.. But then the doctor text me today saying the scan “appears to show TWO possible polyps”… I’m thinking the worst like why did t the sonographer say there was two?? Why is the GP calling it “possible” when the sonographer was definite about it.? It makes me worry that the sonogropher was hiding something bad from me and waiting for the GP to break the news… and the fact the Gp text me so soon makes me worry even more.. im so scared!

Fenellapitstop · 08/11/2024 18:05

It took nearly 4 weeks in total for my results. Still reasonably quick. Are they referring you back to gyne?

Have you had your appointment yet? I just called re mine and they said its a 3 month wait. I have already been 3 months since going to the GP and having to have 2 scans 8 weeks apart! I just burst into tears on the phone, I don't think I can wait another 3 months.

No I haven’t heard a thing! My GP (not the one that referred me) did say though that I would more than likely be downgraded to routine as she didn’t believe I warranted a red flag referral and that the other GP likely did it just to try and get things moving quicker. Thankfully my bleeding has settled so its not of the front of my mind all the time. There are lots and lots of things it could be which are treatable. I know its hard but try not to worry and think of worst case scenario. I know its hard because I spent 2 weeks doing that!

TippledPink · 26/11/2024 13:56

Thanks, it's more the problem of dealing with it rather than what ifs, it is really affecting me, as well as my sex life!

I also have a referral for a cyst which was put as urgent with gynae and I have an appointment next week, wish they could just look at it all in one!

SpillerGlitter · 26/11/2024 17:00

Maybe they will be able to give you some answers at that appointment 🤞

BeaLittleBraver · 27/02/2025 09:54

@SpillerGlitter how did you get on? How thick was your lining? Currently going through the same. 16.8mm thickness on day 20 of the cycle, 38 yo. Have cramp like pains in uterus and had one episode of pink blood between the periods. What is freaking me out as a year ago and last month when I had my ultrasound both sonigraphwrs were asking me if I had surgery to my uterus, or a csection. Answer is no to both. The view appears to be bad and I know scarring can cause it. What if it is something more sinister??? Why would I have the scarring? I had my son 2 years ago and it was my only pregnancy. I am currently waiting for a repeat ultrasound and freaking out.

Met with the gynae a couple of weeks ago. He said based on my symptoms and the fact that I had already been diagnosed with pcos years ago he didn’t think any further investigation was needed. I’m “just” a heavy bleeder because I only get my period every couple of months. He said the lining varies in thickness throughout the cycle and that mine could just be normal for me because of my erratic bleeding pattern. Any kind of trauma can cause scarring. What type of delivery did you have? I had surgery last year and have very painful internal scarring. Inflammation can also cause pain. Fibroids, polyps and lots of other non sinister things could be the cause of your symptoms. I hope you don’t have to wait long for answers.
