Cancer referral happening fast

rockingbird · 23/07/2024 00:07

As the title says, I had a scan last week Wednesday of my uterus including transdermal Thursday I had a call from the doctor advising me of an urgent cancer referral, Saturday a call from the local cancer specialist department. Tomorrow I have an appointment 😳 the lining of my womb was over double what it should be and now I'm freaking out. I can't sleep as I'm worried naturally, yes I'm pleased it's being dealt with so swiftly but my god in less than a week I'm going to be seeing a specialist. Words of encouragement/experience welcome.

It is wonderful that, despite all the problems with the NHS, that you can get appointments so quickly, isn't it?
Remember, that is how they do the referrals. As much for the people who do NOT have Cancer, as those that do.
I wish you all the best.

CeruleanDive · 23/07/2024 00:19

I'm sorry that you're having to go through this. It must be such a shock. I hope tomorrow's appointment goes smoothly and you get some reassurance.

Thank you both, I've slept a little but I feel very frigging shaky about it all. Let's see what today brings..

Sending you best wishes @rockingbird.
Whatever the outcome, you won't be alone here xx

JoJothegerbil · 23/07/2024 19:35

I've had uterine cancer. If it is OP, it's very treatable caught early. I was diagnosed, operated on and was home within 2 weeks. You don't say how old you are, but if you are under 50, as I was, you may get offered testing for Lynch Syndrome.

NewName24 · 23/07/2024 19:55

How have things gone today @rockingbird ?

thursdaymurderclub · 23/07/2024 20:00

im in this process at the moment. the lining of my womb was double what it should be.. i had a hysteroscopy last week which showed a lump which was not picked up on the ultra sound. the GP and the consultants have been very honest and direct about what it may be. they took a biopsy and i am having surgery to have the lump removed tomorrow... and then we shall see.

thursdaymurderclub · 23/07/2024 20:15

so keeping my fingers crossed for you and for me

Doggymummar · 23/07/2024 20:16

Congratulations, I was referred on the two week pathway and my appointment is in 8 weeks apparently gynie is very busy here. The sooner they see you the sooner you can be treated ❣️

oh gosh i am sorry to hear that... from my initial contact with the GP and she referred me, it was 2 weeks for the ultra-sound and then another 2 weeks for the hysteroscopy and my surgery is tomorrow which is just a little under a week so 5 weeks in total.

i am 57, i am post menopausal and i went to the GP because i'd had a bleed some 3 years after my last bleed.

they have made no bones about what they are ruling out. they have never said i actually have cancer, but they have made it very very very clear its a possible outcome.

Doggymummar · 23/07/2024 20:54

I'm pleased for you genuinely, I just wish it wasn't such a lottery. I went private for the consultation, 55 peri meno with awful clotting and thick discharge. Monthly periods despite HRT. Dr also found breast lumps and I was referred in 2 weeks pathway for that too, slightly better with a 24 day wait for that one. Mine says to rule out anything sinister!! 😕 Not a worry at all.

its awful... and the attitude of the men around me (not DH obvs) but work and even the consultant who was male.

when we had a chat before the procedure, he said 'well nothing showed on the ultra-sound' so i'm not expecting to find anything.. and he almost dismeissed me as a hysterical woman.

when he found the lump.. he very matter of fact said 'oh well there it is' and then proceeded to mumble, took a biopsey without any pain relief and then dismissed me again!

i am remaining positive... in my life i've had 1 lump removed from my breast and 2 from my uterus.. i'm hoping for the same outcome

Just adding my good wishes for all of us. I'm 64. Lining is too thick. It was okay two years ago, so the fact that it's grown so much in two yrs is alarming. (I had 4 polyps removed two years ago. That plus a D&C was done under general anaesthetic. No malignancy at that time.)

12 wk wait for the scan and biopsy. Had that last week. (No hysteroscopy as yet.) One to two weeks for the result. Consultant just said "I'm not saying it is cancer..." Again, quite forthright.
Woman consultant and she was lovely - much better than the man I saw two years ago. She used a local anaesthetic when she couldn't get into the neck of the womb straight away. (Too atrophied - but normal for a woman of my age, she said.)

I'm overweight, have never had children and on HRT, so a high risk. Turns out I should have been switched to the combined HRT a while back. (I'm on sequential Femoston. Was switched to that during lockdown when the local pharmacies ran out of sequential Elleste.)

My GP told me I'd be seen in two weeks, but it turned out that the waiting time here for post-menopausal bleeding is "at least 16 weeks". I think I got an earlier appointment because of cancellations - it fell during the Fife holiday fortnight.

My SIL is in her 70s. Diagnosed late 2020. Things were held up by the pandemic. She got her hysterectomy June 2021. No further treatment needed. Absolutely fine now,

Wishing you all the very best. Very glad that you've all been seen so quickly.

thursdaymurderclub · 24/07/2024 10:28

@WearyAuldWumman yes my lining has doubled in the last 3 years! I had the same procedure then and thankfully nothing sinister In the end.

SierraSapphire · 24/07/2024 10:37

I had endometrial cancer. It was 6 months between going to the GP and hysterectomy, various things went wrong, but they did say it's generally slow growing, so a delay isn't necessarily as critical as you'd think physically, just psychologically difficult. Good luck to those of you waiting.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Apart from my SIL, I don't know anyone else who has had similar tests.

TheDogsMother · 24/07/2024 13:01

I had post menopausal bleeding in 2021 and they did a hysteroscopy, removed and polyp and it was all good. Then bleeding occurred again November last year, I had a biopsy in December and they said atypical hyperplasia and possible early stage cancer. Keyhole total hysterectomy in January which confirmed the presence of early stage cancer which was all removed and I was given the all clear. I was 60, no children and on HRT.

Hopefully it is something very simple OP but even if your diagnosis turns out to be like mine it is a very treatable condition.

thursdaymurderclub · 24/07/2024 21:08

All done and gone now... all they told me was a significant lump was removed and they did another biopsy... so now we just wait I guess x but home and ready for bed

rockingbird · 26/07/2024 10:06

Thank you for all your responses and good wishes. The appointment was far more than expected, bloods and history taken then surprisingly they did the biopsy there and then - despite being told on the phone the day they called to make the appointment that no procedure would take place on that day. I came out of the hospital quite shocked! It's done now, I should have the results within two weeks. I'm trying to keep busy and not worry too much - also steering clear of Google.

Doggymummar · 26/07/2024 17:33

My letter for both, I have the gynie appointment too now on 22 Nd August say that biopsies will be taken same day and further treatment mat be necessary and to allow 4 hours for each appointment. Fingers crossed for you.

rockingbird · 06/08/2024 08:54

Have chased up my biopsy results this morning as I have heard nothing since - two weeks today! Is this a normal amount of time to wait? I'm kind of hoping no news is good news!

I got my biopsy result at the very end of the two weeks - the consultant phoned me.
