PRP - Hair loss

rainydays03 · 25/06/2024 12:16

Hi ladies,

Apologies if this is the wrong topic but I was wondering if anyone has had experience with having PRP treatment for hair loss?

Im at my wits end with my thinning hair - i’ve tried every supplement and product going, i’ve even had iron infusions.

Weirdly my hair is always absolutely immaculate during pregnancy but this soon falls out of course.

PRP is really my last hope…

Thank you in advance xx

What's prp? Sorry I'm not sure but also have hair loss issues

It’s basically where they take your blood, extract the ‘liquid gold’ plasma and inject it into your scalp. Its meant to be good but wasn’t sure if it was just another gimic

Hi @rainydays03 , I've come across your post and wondered if you've had any other feedback from anywhere else on prp? I'm also interested, I've just had bloods taken from gp here in Ireland and he's not v sympathetic to the matter! I'm 43 and it's thinning the past couple years along the top and front. I eat very well and take all the relevant supplements. I'm healthy and v grateful for that but I'd like to at least preserve the hair I've left.

Hi lovely, @Mindfullisa I’m actually seeing a private dermatologist next week so I will update you after that but the more I look into PRP and a ‘breakthrough’ treatment called Exosomes the more promising it looks. My only concern is spending the money on the treatment but not treating the root cause.

Did you ask your GP to do a full blood count? Your haemoglobin may be an acceptable level, but really you need to see what your serum ferritin levels are - anything less than 75 and hair struggles - mine sits at about 12. Trying to get a GP to take hair loss seriously is horrendous though , i’ve fought for years and ended up psyong for a private iron infusion which did definitely help temporarily. You have to lay it on super thick with them, make sure you have access to your GP record on the NHS app yourself so you can see the results for yourself.

I’ll update end of next week after my appointment xx

I've done prp for hair a couple of times. It did help my hair growth a bit. However, the procedure is unpleasant.

dontcryformeargentina · 17/07/2024 09:01

Have you checked your thyroid? My hair loss was directly related to thyroid issue. Once it was sorted with medication, the hair has improved. I'm also on HRT now and I've noticed it makes my hair and skin better ( more youthful).

They have checked my thyroid and said it was normal so I guess you have to trust what they say! I saw HRT can have those affects due to the oestrogen but I wouldn’t be given that yet 😔 xx

Would you recommend it overall, aside from the actual treatment? Sounds silly but at this point i’d be willing to try anything! x

@rainydays03 Yes, I would recommend it. I kind of felt it has rejuvenated my scalp a bit and maybe stimulated hair follicles. My hair was so bad, I couldn't make a pony tail. It's much better now, proper length and no visible issues. X

Oh wow that’s amazing, i’m so pleased for you! (and a little jealous lol) I’m worried that my actual follicles have died - and i only really have one hair per follicle instead of maybe 3 to make the thickness. I’ll definitely give it a go, or i’ll always be wondering! Thank you xx

@rainydays03 The other thing which also helped me was upping zinc. It takes longer to see the results but definitely helps. Make sure you are not zinc deficient. xx

ThanÄ· you for all the advice there, i'm glad to hear you have a dermatology appointment next week, its a route i will persue once my bloods are returned next week. Fbc and serum ferritin/thyroid function/ hormone profile/ vit d have all been taken, if any of those are outside normal range it will be something to work with. Interesting to read your info regarding prp and exosomes, im certainly willling to try treatments, if underlying cause can been identified. @dontcryformeargentina i was interested to read that thyroid issues played a part with your hair loss, you must be feeling overall in better health when that is being treated. Positive too to see HRT has been effective for your skin and hair, thanks for recommendation for adding zinc supplemement, i will include that on the shopping list. Thanks for the feedback on PRP

@Mindfullisa Hi there. Just came across this thread as was researching PRP treatments. Have been suffering from sudden pretty drastic hair thinning. Blood results showing low ferritin and Vitamin D. Have been taking supplements but not much improvement to be seen so far. Would love to try PRP as reviews as so positive. I'm in Ireland also and can't find any PRP clinics that deal exclusively with hair loss. Wondering if you've pursued it and if you can recommend somewhere? Seems to be so many more treatments available in the UK. At this stage, I'm considering a day trip! Many thanks 😊

Hey! I’ve done quite a bit of research of vitamins supplements as the doctors don’t seem
to take deficiency's serious unless you are on deaths door with it.

I would really recommend a daily vitamin D tablet and spatone with vitamin c added, that seems to be the kindest on your stomach. I’ve also found that a zinc deficiency can be the cause of hair loss so I take that daily too.

I’ve now had 2 sessions of PRP (second being 3 days ago) and I can’t tell if it’s the above supplements or the PRP but there is definitely new hair growth and less hair loss.
The research i’ve done about PRP says a minimum of 3 sessions a month apart is needed and then a top up maybe a year down the line.

It’s still early days for me but honestly from what i’ve seen so far i’m feeling so positive about it. I hope this helps!

Thanks so much for coming back to me. I'm taking iron, Vitamin D and Viviscal Pro but to date no new growth is happening!! Will try adding zinc too. That sounds very promising about PRP. Can I ask if you went to a dermatologist and got a diagnosis beforehand? I am struggling to find one in Ireland but happy to travel. Hope your improvement continues, you've made me feel a lot more positive! 😊

I think taking the supplements take a while before they are in your system and I read somewhere that for optimum hair growth your ferritin needs to be at 85!! Mines now sitting at around 23 from 6 so that can’t be that true as i’ve definite baby hairs!

I didn’t go to see a dermatologist first now as if i’m honest I thought i’d rather spend the money on a treatment that a consultation then a treatment if that makes sense, but if this doesn’t have the desired effects then I will see one.

I saw a haematologist a couple of years ago and I paid for an iron infusion as he said most hair loss is down to that, that did definitely help too! I know you can get these on the NHS but again you need to be on deaths door with anaemia for them to do it!

So in the end I did my research on PRP and found a clinic semi local to me and I knew i’d need to go there once a month. I would say go for it if you can find one, it certainly won’t make your hair loss any worse, and psychologically you will feel so much better for being pro active about it.

It sounds like you’re going through a tough time with your thinning hair. Many people have found PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) treatment helpful for hair loss, as it can promote hair growth and improve overall hair health. However, it’s important to consult with a dermatologist to determine if PRP is the right option for you.

Have you considered a blood test for Coeliac? I had hair loss at back, near neck and had blood tests for autoimmune diseases and tested positive. Going gluten free now, no other symptoms. Also keep protein intake high.

I believe i’ve been tested for coeliac a couple of years ago as I kept getting cold sores like once a week so they decided to test for that. How would I get a blood test for an autoimmune disease - I do have other symptoms that may point to that perhaps? xx

I went my GP thought it was autoimmune disease related she referred me to NHS dermatologist and she requested a blood test for a range of autoimmune diseases. I didn't hear back and there weren't any results in my NHS app, however my GP had booked me in for heart risk check and I said I hadn't had results back, she could see my blood results and said all clear except positive for Coeliac. I contacted dermatologist and she then referred me to gastro etc. I wonder if I hadn't picked it up when they would?

Yes maybe, maybe I should try and request another test. I went back to my doctor recently who always tell me that because i’m anemic that’s the cause of it - they pump me full of iron tablets which my body just doesn’t like, and although the lack of iron doesn’t help I don’t believe it’s the sole cause. They refused to send me to a dermatologist as they said that because i’m not losing it in patches, it’s not alopecia and therefore not a lot they can do!

My hair is so thin now OP after some weigh loss. If I have a pony tail and twist the band twice it just slides out. It's very worrying. I'm glad you've found something that is working.
