PRP - Hair loss

rainydays03 · 25/06/2024 12:16

Hi ladies,

Apologies if this is the wrong topic but I was wondering if anyone has had experience with having PRP treatment for hair loss?

Im at my wits end with my thinning hair - i’ve tried every supplement and product going, i’ve even had iron infusions.

Weirdly my hair is always absolutely immaculate during pregnancy but this soon falls out of course.

PRP is really my last hope…

Thank you in advance xx

What's your mother's hair like?
That will be a clue how your hair will end up like.
It is genetic.
These other things are fads.
Yes, have a good diet and exercise.

But the rest is a big
Con.

Could I ask how much the PRP costs? as my hair is so thin on top

I’ve paid £250 per session and I think the minimum you need is 3 - but it does vary, if you’re in London you’re going to pay a lot more x

My mums hair is absolutely incredible - honestly she’s in her late 60’s and it’s the thickest hair you’ve ever seen, my dads is also great!

I exercise regularly as have a peloton and have a great diet due to losing weight after having babies, so maybe i’m just an odd case.

I do agree that shampoos, serums, hair growing tablets etc are definitely cons, but it’s definitely
an imbalance ‘internally’ like hormones etc that play a big part x

It’s a horrible thing isn’t it. I know there are so many worse things out there to have medically, but this seems to be something you just can’t ‘fix’. For example if you had dry skin, there are many amazing moisturisers, or if you had varicose veins you can get those fixed - hair loss is entirely different x

Just checking in and keeping up with the updates. I've been referred to dermatologist by my GP.
Interested to see reference to coeliac in the chat, my Father is coeliac. I have no gastro symptoms or other symptoms to indicate coeliac condition, but I will discuss with dermatologist.
It has been suggested above that ones hair presentation follows that of their mother. Luckily for my mother, now 74, she has the most abundant hair and very little grey. But the female hair loss has been on the paternal side, my grandmother and my Aunt.
I'll come back to this thread after my dermatology consultation and give my updates.

That’s great thank you so much! My doctor refuses to refer me to a dermatologist - I don’t know where i’m going wrong 😞 Best of luck to you though, can’t wait for an update!

@Curlymumofthree just in addition you might be interested, my GP referred me to Lee Clinic Dermatology in Cork. He did try Dr Dmitri Wall in the beacon in Dublin but he's not taking new patients. I'll phone Lee Clinic next week to determine their waiting times, hopefully they'll have some treatment options. I hadn't replied here for months, just took time to get back to GP etc.

You need to take a high dose of vitamin C, asorbic acid, with the iron to get it to absorb. There’s a great Facebook group called the iron protocol.

i bought solgar Gentle Iron and I take 2 tablets = 40mg of iron with 1 vitamin C tablet also from solgar which is 1000mg of vitamin C.

This WORKS. And it works quickly. I raised my ferritin from 47 to 70 in a month.

take it on a empty stomach and wait one hour.

Diet alone is not enough to replenish low ferritin.

So… I was happy, my iron was higher. BUT. Hair started falling again.

i did more research, you need folate and b12 to be in balance with iron.

Your body starts using the iron to make more red blood cells. It goes looking for b12 to do this.

Suddenly you are depleted in vitamin b12 and it happens so fast, I became so tired.

my folate is high. My b12 is low. So now I’m working on that. I have solgar methylated b12.

I am also eating duck liver once per week.

lots of eggs, protein, collagen, rainbow fruit and veg. No alcohol. On and on I try.

hair still falling but LOTS of new hair.

i hope this helps someone.

for thyroid NHS is shit. Only tests TSH. Get a private test done to test T3 and T4. Lots of tests around. Then go back to GP if test shows out of range.

NHS only treats to stop you from dying. It does not treat you to give you a good healthy life. The test ranges are insane and can easily leave you feeling like death because they say it’s “normal”. No it’s not.

Go on pub med and do some research. It’s all there.

This is great information thank you!

I was taking 1000mg of prescribed ferrous sulphate a day, but it was so harsh on my stomach, so now I take spatone with vitamin c added but it may not be enough?

The last time I had a blood test my ferritin was 25, the lowest it’s been is 8.

I’ll definitely join the facebook group thank you! xx

High folate, low b12 can cause hair loss.

low b12 can cause hair loss too, is my overall message, not just ferritin.

must also have good vitamin D

Curlymumofthree · 11/10/2024 09:13

Hi there. Would recommend seeing a dermatologist, I see your doc won't refer you but there are some who deal with hair who will see you without a referral. I am experiencing similar hair issues, was extremely stressed about it. Eventually made an appt with a dermatologist, he confirmed my hair loss is caused by iron & vit D deficiency and prescribed specific supplements. He said it would take some months before I see any improvement. It gave me total peace of mind as I had gotten myself into a panic about my hair. If you can at all, I would try to either talk your doc into referring you or make that appt yourself. At least then you'll know what the cause is and you can start on treatment or supplements. Best of luck!

Mabs49 · 11/10/2024 13:22

That is a huge amount of iron. No wonder your poor stomach couldn’t cope.

If you take the gentle iron with vitamin C or the three arrows iron, I’m sure it will go up.

For vitamin D I use pure oil drops, 5000iu per day but I need high strength as I eat it up and quickly for some reason. Any lower than this and I go into deficiency.

I eat the Zoe Nutrition diet but with red meat twice a week for the iron, lots of fish, dairy and eggs too. And now liver once a week as well.

a genetic test I did shows I can’t convert beta carotene to vitamin A very well so I need liver aside from all the b vits, for the vitamin A.

newnamenoname1 · 11/10/2024 18:36

I went through a period of major hair loss and thinning and had a series of Biotin (vitamin B7) jabs which made an absolutely massive difference. I also started using a Danish hair growth serum and shampoo from the same brand and have relatively thick shoulder length hair now. My (private) GP did the jabs, one a week for 6 weeks. I hope you find a solution, OP. Hair loss takes on such an emotional component.

Mabs49 · 11/10/2024 21:25

@newnamenoname1 how did you find out you were deficient in biotin? I know that for people who are, supplementing can make a massive difference but supposedly the theory goes, not many people are deficient and therefore supplementing makes no difference in the majority of people. In fact it can give you acne.

i've found a test online that tests for deficiency but I'm wondering how you found out?

Thanks!

I don't know that I was actually deficient, just that supplementing worked. I tried taking it orally, which only resulted in breakouts and no improvement. I mentioned to my doctor that my hair was falling out in crazy amounts and not regrowing. She agreed that it was a noticeable difference and said that while oral biotin doesn't tend to do much, lots of people have good results from the jabs, so we decided to go ahead with them.

Mindfullisa · 22/10/2024 13:58

@Curlymumofthree would you have the details of the dermatologist you were referred to, to share with me, please.
My GP referred me to Lee Dermatology in Cork but they won't take new patients. I'll follow up with GP and maybe he might identify another dermatologist who might see me. Any recommendations would help.

Curlymumofthree · 23/10/2024 18:20

@Mindfullisa Yes, of course, happy to share. If you'd like to PM me I'll give you the details.

I’m sorry to hear that I actually had the same problem. I went to my GP, and they referred me to a dermatologist. After the consultation, I tried PRP. I wouldn’t say it made a huge difference, but yes, my hair definitely improved. Where do you live? If you’re near Chichester or West Sussex, I’d recommend Meyer Clinic. They’re really good.

Could I ask how painful this is? I’m really interested in trying it but the thought of needles on my scalp terrifies me.
