Did you find out that you didn't have ADHD?

I'll try not to navel gaze but I've been considering the possibility that I have ADHD for a while. Online screeners that don't look too trashy suggest it could be worth going further.

If that's me, it does explain some things and might help me make a career decision that's coming up. If not, it probably doesn't change that much - I could make the same decision, after all.

Was it worth going for a diagnosis? Particularly interested in those who were assessed but didn't have it.

Not me but my DC assessed but didn’t have it

Psychoticbreak · 05/06/2024 22:41

@Guavafish1 have reported your post for sheer ignorance.

No not everyone has adhd. Clearly much more people have ignorance though.

PermanentTemporary · 05/06/2024 22:42

Did it help getting that information Showerscreen? Did they give any other advice?

What a ridiculous ignorant statement .

if you ever made an impulsive decision
if you ever couldn’t focus on your work
if you ever couldn’t sleep because you had noise in your head

does not mean you have a bit of adhd , it means you were a bit distracted, preoccupied .

hope that clears it up

Psychoticbreak · 05/06/2024 22:47

@Starlightstarbright3 every single thread it is said.

Following with interest. Everyone who knows me well says I clearly have ADHD. My DP, my friends, my mum, my boss, my colleagues. My boss once said im the ‘walking poster child for adhd’. Even my own GP without promoting said I should seek diagnosis (known me very well over a decade).

Im 99% sure if I sought a diagnosis I would have it.

However what holds me back is I’ve not met a single person who paid for a private adhd assessment coming out NOT being diagnosed. Same with private autism diagnosis.
Therefore it would be a NHS diagnosis I’d have to seek which waiting lists are huge for.

The main benefit would be for medication to help me at work.

But with the diagnosis being handed out left/right and centre I feel it’s not worth the paper it’s written on unless it’s for medication purposes.

CatStoleMyChocolate · 05/06/2024 22:59

My child didn’t meet the diagnostic threshold when we did a private assessment. He did for ASD but in children, they have to show ADHD traits in more than one setting and to a sufficient degree that it hits the diagnostic threshold. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t have it and might be worth revisiting if things change as he gets older - but don’t assume you can “buy” a diagnosis, as some ignorant people assume/inform you.

Greengrapeofhome · 05/06/2024 23:01

following with interest. I don’t know a single person (adult or child) who has had a face to face appointment for adhd diagnosis and not received it. I have known of a child who was knocked back for not meeting the threshold to go on the calms waiting list though for possible adhd

Psychoticbreak · 05/06/2024 23:01

@Mammacita1 the diagnosis is NOT handed out lightly. People who pay and in my case over a thousand quid get a diagnosis because we already know. We dont hand over the cash just for a diagnosis to get pills.

They really don't. In the same way that we are not 'all a bit autistic'.

FawnFrenchieMum · 05/06/2024 23:05

I would assume most get a diagnosis when going privately as they have reached a point that paying £1000s is the only alternative left to help get their condition recognised not because they have paid for it!

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 05/06/2024 23:07

Diagnosed with both autism and ADHD on the NHS. The ADHD diagnosis is much more recent and I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. I've been prescribed meds but am not taking them.

What a load of shit.

They absolutely don't.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 05/06/2024 23:09

When you say you did screeners that 'didn't look too trashy' I'm not sure if you're talking about some kind of Facebook quizes, or something more robust.

If you wish to take it further, your GP will likely ask you to do this test. It will inform them if you meet the diagnostic threshold for assessment.

I think the people I know who are on private adhd medication seem to be more messed up than I’ve ever seen them and majorly out of pocket. They proclaim the medication helps but as an outsider looking in, I think it’s made their life worse.

Honestly how MN allows this goading bullshitery every couple of days is an absolute disgrace.

This is what I suspect. Those going for private diagnosis are self-selecting. They already strongly suspect they have ADHD and it has enough of an impact for them to need/want the "label". I strongly suspect I am ADHD and autistic but also know I wouldn't take medication for the ADHD so don't feel the need for the diagnosis. I act as if I do have it in the way I managed my social interactions although I am not open about it. I just describe it more as personality/behaviour types and working styles).

Psychoticbreak · 05/06/2024 23:16

@NCGrandParent it is a diagnosis not a label and there is nothing wrong with taking medication. Mine has been life changing. I think people who 'suspect' they have 'it' and do not need a 'label' and have no intention of 'taking meds' are actually not anywhere at all on the spectrum.

Oh stop it. I can assure you as a woman in her 50s with ADHD and with 3 dc with ADHD, everyone does not have adhd.

Your comment is offensive

Well this isn't true. I have both diagnoses on the NHS and neither came lightly and I'm not taking the meds for an array of complicated reasons and fear after some previously bad experiences. It doesn't mean I'm not severely struggling.

To be frank, not many people would go for an adhd assessment costing over £1000 with titration if they weren't pretty damn sure they had adhd so of course most will come out with a positive diagnosis.

Decent online providers use psychiatrist that are affiliated with the NHS and are regulated
