DD 14 1/2 no period yet

Passwordsarestressful · 28/05/2024 21:46

DD started puberty as expected. Has developed breasts, body hair etc. All this started at 11. Gets mood swings, fatigue etc, but no periods yet.
She is a normal weight for her height, a.little on the low side, but very slim rather than skinny, skinny. 5 ft 7 and a size 6/8.
I started mine at 12, paternal aunts the same.
GP has fobbed us off, but she is getting anxious and I have been fobbed off with many a later serious issue.
Anyone have any advice?

I started mine at 14. Oddly I started getting hair and boobs at 9! I don't think it's concerning yet.

lola1208 · 28/05/2024 21:56

I didn't start mine until I was 16. I wouldn't worry about it

PacoJazz · 28/05/2024 21:58

Mine started at 16 for example.

Tupperwarefan · 28/05/2024 21:58

I was 16 and also very slim although I don't know that there is a link

MysticCatLady · 28/05/2024 22:00

What do you mean the GP has fobbed you off?

As a GP I'd be reassuring you that 14 is still within the normal limits of menarche and the fact that she has other signs of puberty is reassuring. I wouldn't be doing anything different unless she still hadn't started by age 16. Would you consider that advice to be fobbing you off?

PiggyPlumPie · 28/05/2024 22:04

DD was 2 weeks shy of 18. GP started the ball rolling for investigation at 16.

She had bloods, scans, endocrinologist involvement. They had come to the conclusion that it was just a matter of time when she started.

In hindsight, she was glad to start later as she was more able to cope. As dhe said, "Periods suck!"

WayOutOfLine · 28/05/2024 22:06

There's some research showing that girls are hitting the other signs of puberty earlier than in the past, but the age of starting your first period is around the same, or just 6 months younger, so she's probably fitting that newer trend, although I am not a medical expert obviously.

JaninaDuszejko · 28/05/2024 22:06

I know girls on average start their periods much earlier these days but 14 is well within the normal range.

I started my period at 14, my Mum and sister were both 11, my daughters were both 13 so it doesn't always follow a family pattern.

Mickz · 28/05/2024 22:07

I was 15.5 when I started mine. Perfectly normal I think though much less common.

Alwaystired2023 · 28/05/2024 22:09

I was 17 when I started... was always slim slim, think I read somewhere you need a certain % of body fat to start your periods? If you are worried get back to doctors and insist they listen but it does sound in the regions of normal to me

WetBandits · 28/05/2024 22:14

I was 10, my sister was 17. Both healthy with normal cycles. 14 is fine, it’s not considered ‘late’ until at least age 15.

Stylishcooncil · 28/05/2024 22:15

I don't think you have been fobbed off, it's within normal range so there would be no investigation at this stage.

AliceCallous · 28/05/2024 22:16

Passwordsarestressful · 28/05/2024 22:17

This is all reassuring. The advice online varies a little, but is generally if nothing by 15 or 3 years after breasts start to develop, see a GP. Friend is a GP who said she'd recommend going now to start the ball rolling. Not that 14 is late, but the gap between breast development and menses onset is straying in to unusual territory.
Male GP was dismissive of this, basically 'stop Googling'.

You/she are packing about nothing. She's well inside the 'normal' range.

tell her to make the most of it!!

Again, I wouldn't panic on that point. I was a B cup when mine started, but within the year I'd gone up to a DD. So you might think they've developed but could have way more to go.

Passwordsarestressful · 28/05/2024 22:20

Not packing or panicking about anything 🙄, just asking a simple question. Christ I forget how patronising this place can be.
Thanks to everyone else.

God love her. She's big enough for her frame! 🤣

I'm pretty sure that it is also related to weight, she does sound very slim indeed and basically the more you weigh, the earlier it all starts, so that's going to be a fairly obvious starting point, and as she ages up to 16, this may well change. I once had a (strange) job measuring pubertal development in teens and there were a lot of differences due to height, weight and also race (certain groups are more likely to start developing sooner, some later).

Hoglet70 · 29/05/2024 06:28

I was nearly 15 and my sister was 15. My Mum and Nan were both much younger. I remember eating loads to put on weight as someone told me you wont get periods until you're at least 8 stone. Haha how to have that problem now!

ThelmaLouise72 · 29/05/2024 06:34

I was 12 and my daughter was 11 (first day of secondary school of all days) but my friend was 18! It varies. I wouldn't worry.

Chickenuggetsticks · 29/05/2024 08:18

It’s probably just low body fat, I wouldn’t worry about it too much but no harm in getting checked out if she needs reassuring.

Ellemeg82 · 29/05/2024 08:35

I also started mine at 16. Most of my friends had started around 12.
I don't think it's anything to worry about.

SallyWD · 29/05/2024 08:36

I wouldn't worry yet. I was nearly 15 when I started mine and my friend was nearly 17!

Coffeegincarbs · 29/05/2024 08:39

I think it's probably related to BMI. My tall and lean daughter started much later than shorter and unsporty me!
