Be brutally honest, it's cancer isn't it?

I had my first smear test today, I'm 24.

I bled during it and the nurse saw a yellow spot on my cervix. She said it's a normal cyst, called a nabothian cyst, but she also referred me for a colposcopy.

She said it was just to be safe, but why would an overstretched NHS do that? She's definitely seen something awful, hasn't she? She said I would be seen very quickly too.

Why would she do that if it wasn't sinister? It's cancer, isn't it?

I've had a colposcopy (two, in fact). I've never had cancer.

WonderingWanda · 26/02/2024 18:51

Well I've got one of those cysts and I bleed during smears and no bothered referring me for anything. I am sure she is just being safe op.

Exactly. Why would she refer me for something totally normal? When the NHS is already awful?

Which clearly isn't normal or I wouldn't have bene referred?

I was recently referred from GP for an ultrasound and was seen within TWO DAYS.

This was for an issue I'd had previously, diagnosed myself, GP agreed with the diagnosis and it's something completely harmless that the NHS rarely even treat these days. Sometimes they just investigate minor stuff to confirm

stclair · 26/02/2024 18:53

nabothian cysts are common, bleeding when cervix is brushed is also common and most likely due to an ectropian cervix. Have a look at Jos Trust (ignoring the word cancer!) as there is a lot of useful resources on there and also a helpline which is great and may help you.

Shiningout · 26/02/2024 18:54

If she thought it was suspected cancer it would say on the referral, I had it with melenoma. I think you're alright op but totally understand the worry x

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 26/02/2024 18:54

I bled during my last smear test. Nurse wasn't worried in the slightest. Just said she'd probably just been slightly rough. Gave me a pad and off I went. Another time I did get referred but I was bleeding between my period, after intercourse and also had lots of lower cramping around my stomach and back. Again all came back perfectly normal. The only thing I did discover whilst I was there, is that I have a retroverted uterus which is probably why shagging gives me the worst cramps ever.

She’s being thorough. Honestly, stop being so anxious. Nobody has mentioned cancer. I had exactly this, nabothian cyst and was referred just to confirm. Confirmed it was a cyst. That was my first ever smear test, so an excellent start -!

Would it? Because she already told me she was sorry to make me anxious for waiting etc., so I doubt she would've said anything

Jesus wept OP, you've asked people to be brutally honest and you aren't listening. What do you want people to say? It's definitely cancer? Best start prepping for the worst? You've been told the nurse is following procedure, if that's not good enough and you're going to spiral out of control without actually listening to what anyone is telling you what's the point in your post?

Same here, first ever smear test and I get told I've possibly got cancer. What's the point

Remember to ignore the word cancer in the blurb! That’s not why I’m posting it. There’s much more on this site than that.

You have not been told that. Are you even reading the very helpful experiences people are sharing?

But you absolutely weren’t told you might have cancer, you were told you had a cyst which they always check out because it’s protocol!!!!

I basically have, or I wouldn't have been referred when the NHS is on its knees? Genuinely, when you can rarely get in to see your GP, why else would they refer?

I meant, think yourself lucky she's bothering to double check. I don't think those cysts are remotely linked to cancer op, she's just being a bit thorough.

My dd got referred for multiple eye checks and follow ups for a freckle in her eye. After a year she was signed off as being fine. The next eye test the optometrist couldn't believe she'd been referred for it as it was normal in his opinion. Different people make different judgements often based on experience.

No need to be rude.

No. It was for ENT.

Well, I wasn't being rude. Because it seems like you have health anxiety.

What was your ENT referral for? Did you fear the worst then, as well?

Ratfinkstinkypink · 26/02/2024 18:58

Something like 97% of two week wait referrals turn out not to be cancer, they always rule out the serious before they rule in the less serious conditions because it is cheaper to do it that way.

Robotik · 26/02/2024 18:58

She’s seen what she thinks is a cyst and she needs someone to double check it to confirm. She doesn’t suspect it’s cancer. She said she suspects it’s a cyst and you’re being referred so they can confirm it.

Of course they will still refer you....you just might have a bit of a wait. There isn't some nationwide directive telling staff to only refer for the worst cases. Try to calm down a but op or you are going to give yourself an ulcer.

strawberryandtomato · 26/02/2024 18:58

This is SOOOOO common. And could be a number of things. Highly doubtful to be cancer if you're 24 and haven't had symptoms. I was referred on the 2 week pathway (aged 31) and was told it was probably bowel cancer. It wasn't. But I cried for 2 weeks straight. The waiting is actually the hardest part.

I also bled during my smear when I was 25. Currently 33. Had numerous smears since. All okay. I've had a couple of cysts too.

Don't over think, be pro active and call everyday for cancellations to put your mind at ease. Knowledge is power and the waiting is the worst part

I have been referred to the brest clinic within the 2 weeks wait no less than 3 times. I knew it was cysts, my GP knew it was cysts, the specialist doctors knew it was cysts. Bur it's literally their job to do their due diligence, regardless of the state of the NHS.

You really need to calm down and speak to your doctor about this health anxiety.

delphi13 · 26/02/2024 19:00

My friend was referred and was told in no uncertain terms that they didn't like what they saw at all and that she also needed an urgent mri as it looked like cancer. It was cancer. They literally told her, no pussy footing around suggesting it was just to be safe.

I was referred for possible cell changes and told it looked alright but they would do another check to be safe. I was fine.

You are massively jumping to conclusions. They are doing it to be on the safe side so take a breath and chill.

Because although the nhs is struggling, it still refers on for things that need checking out, I've had two referrals this year for things that theoretically could have been something serious but turned out to be absolutely nothing. Try and slowly read through the responses on this thread, it's highly likely to be nothing to be worried about.

Pootle40 · 26/02/2024 19:01

Was your ENT referral for your ears due to dizziness? I only ask as that is very common amongst anxiety sufferers (dizziness)
