Be brutally honest, it's cancer isn't it?

I had my first smear test today, I'm 24.

I bled during it and the nurse saw a yellow spot on my cervix. She said it's a normal cyst, called a nabothian cyst, but she also referred me for a colposcopy.

She said it was just to be safe, but why would an overstretched NHS do that? She's definitely seen something awful, hasn't she? She said I would be seen very quickly too.

Why would she do that if it wasn't sinister? It's cancer, isn't it?

I don't believe her because I was told six months ago that I would be referred for another health issue, yet I never got the referral.

This one is done within minutes. That only means one thing, cancer.

No it doesn't, stop being silly and trust the health professionals and all the other older posters on here with similar experiences maybe?

whenemmafallsinlove · 26/02/2024 18:38

The issue here is not your cervix, it's your anxiety. Perfectly normal to worry about this but not to the doomladen extent you are going. Have you been worried about having cancer for a long time? There is help available.

UpUpUpU · 26/02/2024 18:39

OP, with kindness, you are being a bit dramatic.
it is protocol and the nurse had to refer you. Chances are you’ll be absolutely fine. There is no need to catastrophise the situation.

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 26/02/2024 18:40

Stop catastrophising! You'll drive yourself mad. Further testing is a precautionary measure, an exclusionary measure...ruling out anything more sinister than a harmless cyst.

I've never been worried before, but now I've been referred due to queried cancer, I will (of course) be worried

Yet the referral I was meant to get in August of last year never happened?

And when did the nurse mention cancer?

LuckyLerwick · 26/02/2024 18:43

OP, you can't jump to conclusions like this - with kindness, you are catastrophising a bit. I don't blame you for being worried at all, it is scary when you get a referral. But, as previous posters have said, they're just doing their job. I was referred after a smear for a colposcopy and just like you, it was because of a Nabothian cyst. They did a punch biopsy, it was all very quick and straightforward. I bled a bit afterwards and was a little sore for a day or so, but the results came back quickly and I was given the all clear.
I suppose what I'm trying to say is don't borrow trouble - this is a good thing that they are being so thorough. And it's excellent they have been quick with the referral.

A referral for an abnormal smear is obviously cancer...

Your smear wasn’t abnormal though? The nurse has seen a cyst?

Which clearly isn't normal or I wouldn't have bene referred?

Nope

Ive had a colposcopy, no cancer

Ok OP, you clearly won’t be told it’s very likely to be absolutely nothing so I’m not going to waste my breath any longer.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 26/02/2024 18:47

I was referred when they saw a red spot and I had bleeding after sex. They said its probably just a strawberry spot, but protocol was to send for testing.

It was fine, no issues and all clear. I've been through the cancer 2 week protocol a few times now, god bless the NHS!

You're being dramatic and need to calm down. If every referral was guaranteed to be cancer there would be no point in referring anyone, you'd just start cancer treatment. The nurse is following the guidelines. You haven't had an abnormal smear, you've had a cyst spotted that just happens to have been spotted during a cyst, that's all. Most actual abnormal smears also do not turn out to be cancer.

The wait on referrals depends on departments etc. I waited 6 weeks for a referral to an allergy clinic but I'm going on 18 months for ENT. You'll drive yourself crazy with anxiety when statistically it isn't cancer.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 26/02/2024 18:47

I've had colposcopy and didn't have cancer. I had some funny cells

But cysts can be perfectly normal! That's everyone's point. Type in cervical cysts to Google and the first things it will say is that they're aren't cancerous, often don't need treatment, need removing or have symptoms.

Is that related to this?

Geebray · 26/02/2024 18:48

Not sure what you're trying to get from this thread OP. You are determined that you have cancer, no matter what anyone else says about having had the same procedure.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 26/02/2024 18:48

And I always used to bleed at smears

I've had several abnormal smears and several referrals. I also have several cysts and fibroids. None of this is cancer.

seriouslygettingold · 26/02/2024 18:49

Been referred on 2 week cancer pathway on 3 separate things, it was never cancer, but they have to check.
My husbands cancer was found suddenly and completely out the blue.
Cancer pathway does not always mean it will be cancer.
My daughter had a 2 week cancer pathway referral twice in the path, again not cancer.

LizzeyBenett · 26/02/2024 18:50

I had a colposcopy it wasn't cancer it was abnormal cells that could lead to cancer but it went away by itself after a number of months some people might have to have them lasers off if it's a high enough grade. I Think jumping straight to cancer is extreme.

hopefulmummytobe78 · 26/02/2024 18:50

Geebray · 26/02/2024 18:48

No need to be rude.

No. It was for ENT.
