Can you go to a&e for a painful vag?

Just as the title says. I'm in a lot of pain in my vaginal canal. It's only relieved when I lay down. I am walking like John Wayne. Im 41 haven't had any rough sex or anything. Not an STI, married 20 yrs. It's like a throbbing, itchy, irritated feeling and I don't know what to do. What would happen if I went to hospital with something like this?

I think most A+E doctors wouldn't have a clue. And you would be triaged to the lowest level of priority so it would be a very very long wait.

GP on Monday or 111 if it can't wait

FionnulaTheCooler · 10/02/2024 17:56

I'd phone 111 and see if you can book into an out of hours GP service. I'd imagine you'd be in for a very long and uncomfortable wait in A&E since you'd probably be fairly far down the triage list.

TraitorsGate · 10/02/2024 17:56

Have you seen the practice nurse or gp

Runningwildish · 10/02/2024 17:56

Go to the chemist sounds like it could be thrush

2dogsandabudgie · 10/02/2024 17:57

Could it be thrush? Maybe go to a supermarket with a pharmacy and ask there.

Adooree · 10/02/2024 17:57

Could you be postmenopausal ? Vaginal atrophy ? ( dryness , leading to small cuts / abrasions ) A prolapse ?

sprinklebow · 10/02/2024 17:59

I am one of those people who absolutely never goes to see the dr, even when I really need too. I hate the thought of wasting anyone's time. So if you can imagine, if I am considering going, it really really hurts.

It's not thrush. Absolutely no discharge.
I will wait it out until Monday. As sitting hurts too much right now so sitting for hours is a no go.
Thanks

Any discharge? As in could it be thrush or another infection? Or have you changed anything that could have irritated you, new underwear/soap/detergent.

If it's debilitating pain then a&e is an option, but be prepared to be sent away and told to take paracetamol and see a GP if it doesn't get better.
111 is an option too.

Runningwildish · 10/02/2024 18:03

I've had thrush without discharge, might be worth a trip to the chemist, you'd be better off going to a sexual health clinic than A and E if the chemist can't help, but I'd give the canestan a go first

Runningwildish · 10/02/2024 18:04

My DC is A and E doc and they'd go to a sexual health clinic for that sort of problem

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 10/02/2024 18:49

It's not an emergency so no. You don't go to A&E!

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 10/02/2024 18:51

Get to the chemist

Can you go to a&e for a painful vag?
BlackBoxes · 10/02/2024 19:53

I would use 111 online and see what they advise. I agree an out of hours gp would be more helpful than going to A&E with all the Saturday night drunks.
Could it be a bartholin cyst?

Downbythewaterfall · 10/02/2024 19:58

Could you have an old tampon up there potentially?

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 10/02/2024 19:58

Prolapse or bartholin's cyst?

If you are in agony & it's getting worse, I would go to A&E

If not, GP or well woman clinic but most likely you may need a referral to a gynaecologist.

TwinsJan22 · 10/02/2024 20:00

Can you feel any swelling down there or have you had a look with a mirror? Could it be a bartolins gland cyst? They’re bloody painful but you’d normally see a swelling on one side

PudgeControlsTheWeather · 10/02/2024 20:00

Thrush doesn't necessarily present as you'd expect. I'd honestly try the pharmacy (or Amazon, if you can't face walking and can wait a day for Prime) - I've had friends who say that thrush is hugely painful, whereas for me it was mildly annoying.

bustybetty · 10/02/2024 20:05

I would go get a thrush treatment and see if it helps. hope you feel better soon xx

10ThousandSpoons · 10/02/2024 20:08

Can you get to a sexual health clinic?

Princesspollyyy · 10/02/2024 20:17

Every time I have had thrush, I've not had discharge.

I would try a Canasten pessary and see if you get any relief from that, you can bet it from supermarkets x

ChocHotolate · 10/02/2024 20:25

What would happen? You'd have a long wait and then probably a speculum examination and maybe some swabs taken but probably no swabs in reality

Lougle · 10/02/2024 20:30

Go to a 24 hour pharmacy and get thrush treatment. It won't do you any harm if it isn't thrush but it will work really quickly if it is. Tbh, with your description, I'd bet my last penny that you have thrush.

Gemstonebeach · 10/02/2024 20:34

I don’t get any discharge with thrush, just all the other symptoms. But it also isn’t that painful for me, I’d say it would be worth going to an out of hours care provider or even trying a telehealth option to discuss with a healthcare professional as I had a colleague who it turned out had a terrible cyst high up inside her vagina and had to have surgery to get it sorted.

sprinklebow · 10/02/2024 20:41

Thanks everyone, I am going to head to Asda now and get a thrush pessary. I've had thrush once before, but it was never as painful as this time so I guess that's why I figured it wasn't that. I suppose it won't do any harm and if not better in a day or two I'll go to see the GP. Once again thanks for your help xx
