B12 really high?

Jodie569 · 30/01/2024 16:32

Hello, for a while I've been feeling weak so booked some bloods with my GP a few days ago. I've just checked my results online line and it says my b12 is in the thousands ?. Apart from red blood count satisfactory all the others were completely normal. The doctors have just texted asking to attend an appointment next week.

Just would like to know if anyone else has had this too?. Early last year i did pay private for b12 shots, would that still be the in my system?. Any advice please?

Yes, it could still be in your system. Did you tell the GP you had paid for injections?

How many shots did you have?
And did you have a blood test before having them or did you have them without knowing if your levels were low to begin with?

When I was started on injections by the GP and my level got to over 1,000, the lab report said my levels were ‘adequate for at least 2 years’, but I was deficient to begin with.

Thank you for replying. Stupidly didn't get bloods to check first and paid privately. Didn't have many last year, last one was in end july/early August.

I have seen on the lab notes that the serum folate results were invalid and to retest me again for both. The b12 is 2300 which is way over!.

Not had chance to tell my doctor it's all still very Covid at the surgery, all done online now. I am seeing her for a follow up next week so will tell her then.

Dd had high vit b12 levels. She told the gp she was taking vit b12 supplements so he just said stop , but she’d only been taking them a week….i didn’t think a week would make them too high. Hers were over 2000. She’s never had her levels retested so no idea if still high or not.

Thank you that's kind of reassuring, how along was this?. Hope she's okay now?

That is a test for serum B12, the amount swilling around in your blood. It tells you nothing about your active B12 - the amount that your body can actually convert.

Consider a private blood test through Thriva or similar to get your active levels checked.

Did you feel better after the injection?

Thank you, I am clueless when it comes to results hopefully my GP can explain this. I will look into private tests, I've done it before.

I've added my result.

If you click on photo you will see it better.

YNK · 30/01/2024 19:24

All B12 tests are skewed by B12 treatment which is why NICE guidelines advise against testing after treatment - ie it's misleading!
Unfortunately your GP local guidelines are likely to contradict the expert advice in favour of one very badly flawed test.

Oh and according to the WHO (world health org) there is no TUL (toxic upper limit) for B12 as it is completely non-toxic so high levels are harmless. You will safely excrete any excess.

Paw2024 · 30/01/2024 19:42

I take a multi vitamin and mine were so high they just said unreadable Confused

Thank you YNK, I have no clue about blood results and I try not to google because it's all misinformation on the internet.

Thank you paw, I do take vitamin d, magnesium and primrose oil. Been taking them for a couple of weeks and the dizziness has mostly gone away. The b12 injections did make me feel a bit more better as well. But stopped in August.

There is a great FB group where you will be directed to solid research about B12.
Pernicious Anaemia/B12 Deficiency - Support Group | Facebook

Also a Book by Sally Patcholok called 'Could it be B12' is thoroughly researched with references.

What was your iron result?

What was your iron result?

Hi, it was Normal right in the middle.

Allthecatseverywhereallatonce · 31/01/2024 08:07

I had a very similar B12 level through taking supplements. I was tired and thought it would improve my energy. My GP told me to stop taking it, I was retested and it had gone down to 900. My GP was happy with this level and I have not been retested.

Jodie569 · 31/01/2024 12:12

Thank you, do you think the B12 shots I had early August could still be in my system?. I have to retest again next on the folate one was invalid. Did you just stop?

reflecting2023 · 31/01/2024 12:15

I think it's probably just the supplements as stores stay for about 18/12

I hope so, I'm thinking if it was something more serious my other blood results would be abnormal.

reflecting2023 · 31/01/2024 13:54

It's not serious anyway as I'm there aren't really any conditions I can think of that causes high B12 and we don't investigate it in any way. We often see it in pts on replacements

Thank you, I was really worried because it said online about it being very serious. Also just seen my doctor hasn't actually booked me in to see her, it was a admin error and says I just need to retest my folate because it was invalid reading. Thank you, your knowledge helps me not think of the worst case.

reflecting2023 · 31/01/2024 17:45

Well I could be wrong I suppose but it's not something I would be worried about. V High iron levels are something we would investigate ( not just ferritin as that is an acute phase reactant meaning it can go up in infections etc)

Thank you hopefully the doctor can get to the bottom of it. I am glad my other bloods are all normal the red blood is slightly over but that's normal for me over the years. My liver and kidneys one is normal too. I need to chill out and stop worrying.
