B12 really high?

Jodie569 · 30/01/2024 16:32

Hello, for a while I've been feeling weak so booked some bloods with my GP a few days ago. I've just checked my results online line and it says my b12 is in the thousands ?. Apart from red blood count satisfactory all the others were completely normal. The doctors have just texted asking to attend an appointment next week.

Just would like to know if anyone else has had this too?. Early last year i did pay private for b12 shots, would that still be the in my system?. Any advice please?

It sounds like your injections have raised the level and that's not a problem. Those supply will still be in your stores.
Wrt rare causes of elevated cobalamin I had a google - not something I'd heard of but seemed to say severe alcoholic liver disease and some myeloproliferative disorders - I guess if they were very high without supplements this might mean it's sensible to take further with liver blood tests fbc and film and repeat the B12 level / ask haematology advice

I have this on all blood tests. When the level is that high I feel fine. When it is merely a bit above the normal range I have some signs of B12 deficiency. Imagine this must be true for you too or you wouldn't have had the injections!

When I tested my genome (for other reasons) I learned that I had rare variants in the TCN2 gene which codes for a B12 transporter. Basically the B12 doesn't get into the cells efficiently and is left in the blood, so the levels are high but cells are relatively depleted.

There can be a lot of other reasons, apparently, but if no cause can be found and you feel basically fine this might be the reason. I found this article quite useful: www.swintegrativemedicine.com/blog/causes-of-high-b12-without-supplementation?hs_amp=true

I rarely drink maybe once or twice a year. All my other blood results including liver and full blood count normal. Just waiting on folate because it was invalid.

Thank you, when I was having the injections I actually did feel better. But because it was expensive I stopped, luckily did because my results are high. I just have the usual deficiency symptoms now which isn't pleasant. Hopefully the doctor will tell me more when I see her next week.

If you are symptomatic for B12 deficiency please get knowledgeable help, especially if you were benefitting from injections.

Thank you will hopefully know more when I see my doctor next week. I definitely feel like I have a deficiency. I'm going to ask her if I can have an active b12 test too.

Hey, just looked at my NHS app and seen that in 2020 I had a reading of 173ng/L this is normal but also think it could be low enough? I have all symptoms of low in something, I did have H.Pylori last year after having an Endoscopy and I do have benign thyroid nodules (not sure if there is any connection). I have an appointment tomorrow but terrified they are going to just say retest in few months.
