Curious....as I'd like to cut out snacking but I know I couldn't last between meals.

OP posts:

Breakfast: banana, LOTS of peanut butter (organic, no additives, dark roast), cup of tea

Lunch: sushi or a noodle stir fry or rolls with smoked salmon and blue cheese. Plus some sort of fruit.

Dinner: varies, but always protein, veg and carbs. Pasta dishes, curries (with rice), grilled meats/chicken/fish with roasted vegetables, that sort of thing. Lots of spices and international flavours.

I’ve never smacked. It’s not how I was brought up. I’m not British and snacks, puddings and so on aren’t a ‘thing’ in my culture, so I'm not a massive fan. I don’t get hungry in between meals, because I eat large meals with the intent that they sustain me until the next one.

RedRusset · 22/10/2023 01:13

Breakfast, 2 slices of toast and marmalade,
Milky coffee

Lunch, one slice of toast, boiled egg and salad. Instead of an egg, I might have cheese or hummus
1 yogurt

Dinner, whatever's on the menu, something like chicken stir-fry and rice or fish pie

Yogurt

I allow myself treats like a cake or a couple of biscuits at the weekend, plus an occasional pudding

If I feel hungry between meals, I try to stick to fruit. Bananas are great for taking the edge off hunger

I think you have a lot more willpower than me!!! I clearly use food far too much as a reward. I'm curious, how do you unwind for example on a weekend evening? I think I've gotten in the habit of treating myself when the kids go to bed and it's got to stop!!!

Wine! 😁

Lunch massive salad

Massive salad alert!

This whole thread is a look how healthy my diet is stealth boast

It’s not a stealth boast for gods sake. The poster literally asked what do you eat so you don’t snack?
People are putting down what they eat!

PurpleWisteria1 · 22/10/2023 01:26

Eggs protien (meat or fish) and avacado

salad with protien- meat or fish and usually a little cheese

Protien and veg with a sauce - so spag bol without the spag. Curry no rice or naan etc

If I do snack it’s Greek youghurt, fruit (not banannas or dates or raisins) raw veg or nuts.

The Hunger goes after a week or two. The snacking and sugar cravings all die down.

It really is all anyone needs to lose weight / maintain a healthy weight

mamma65432 · 22/10/2023 01:26

I think it's about good habits, so eating fairly healthily within your calorie / metabolic allowance to lose or maintain weight. So for me, poached egg or jam on sourdough for breakfast, apple for a mid morning snack, lunch is always an open chicken sandwich on sour dough - mid afternoon a square or two of fancy chocolate, dinner is chicken breast salad - but with nandos sauce and croutons and evening another square of nice chocolate, drinks are coffee/tea/sparkling water/pepsi max and fancy light tonic water in the evening. Once a week I treat myself to a small fantastic Italian wood fired pizza from a local street food vendor.

coxesorangepippin · 22/10/2023 01:27

I'll preface this by saying it's extremely difficult at first but becomes second nature

Today I've had:

Porridge made with milk

Ham, cheese, egg, lettuce, tomato sandwich, and a massive apple

Chicken tikka thigh, baked garlic potato, broccoli. Apple compote for dessert

About 1/4 bottle red wine

If I am starving I'll eat a hard boiled egg in between meals. Or some greek yogurt. As pp's have said, protein is the key.

And do you guys feel hungry between meals? How do you cope with the low mood/hunger between?

It's okay to feel hungry throughout the day, as long as you're eating nutritious meals.

It's the same way as it's okay to feel tired throughout the day at times - we don't go lay down for a nap straight away do we Grin We just carry on with our day.

The same with food - if I'm hungry at 11am I just tell myself: 'wait until lunchtime; a person can go a month without food, so you're fine'. Then have herbal tea or lots of water.

Discipline.

So what if someone takes pride in their healthy eating habits?

Good on them.

Better than people boasting about how much McDonalds they ate and how smashed they got on the weekend.

AzureBlue99 · 22/10/2023 02:21

I never eat breakfast, except if I am staying in a hotel when I have that instead of lunch.

During the week if I am working at home I have soup, normally lentil. If I am in the office oatcakes and hummus.

At night I eat anything really - stirfry with salmon, pasta dish, casserole.

No snacking. Although I have just bought some pears so will have one of those mid afternoon this week.

Occasionally at the weekend I might have cake if I am at a nice tea/coffee shop.

I never feel hungry between meals. If I start to feel empty I drink a glass of water.

I think your body just gets used to a set level of food so the hunger pangs would go after a while if you just kept to the same amounts.

Werewolfnotswearwolf · 22/10/2023 02:26

HALF a ham and cheese toastie for lunch?!
Here we go…😂

OP, could you have maybe 4-5 smaller ‘meals’ spread out through the day if you’re more of a grazer?

hoobanoobie · 22/10/2023 02:28

One meal a day, late in the evening usually involving a lot of melted cheese. I don’t feel hungry during the day so breakfast, lunch and normal dinner times don't apply. I never snack because I just don’t have the urge to. I'm 5ft nothing and a healthy weight for my size. Some people just don't need 3 meals a day, never mind snacking. We're all different.

Oblomov23 · 22/10/2023 02:54

This is fascinating. People are eating a lot less food than I do!

But you still need a whole range of vitamins and minerals. I doubt one meal a day with a lot of melted cheese probably is giving your body what it needs.

There's some disordered eating here for sure. There's no way some of these posters are eating what they need.

Anon_92 · 22/10/2023 05:00

I think I probably don't eat enough at meals to be honest. Always feel rushed with the kids but do have a lot of protein. But maybe my portion sizes are too small. I'm always in the habit of having pudding but it's a gateway to having loads of other crap too!

OP posts:
Caspianberg · 22/10/2023 05:52

Breakfast - granola with fruit and yogurt, or boiled eggs with toast.

Lunch - rye bread with ham/ cheese/ raw veg or salad ontop as open sandwich. Sometimes soup and bread. Fruit or yogurt

Dinner: Something hot. ie last night was sausage and butternut squash casserole, with mash potato and green beans.

Generally I don’t snack, I don’t feel hungry between meals to snack.

Nothankyou22 · 22/10/2023 05:53

You need high protein meals

littleblackcat27 · 22/10/2023 06:20

@oktobeok go on then - tell us what your excellent dietary input looks like...

I'm prediabetic - and if I ate what lots of people eat (nice as it is) my blood sugars would just go up and up until I was properly diabetic. So bread is totally off the menu for me.

One meal a day for some people can work for them as it keeps your blood sugar lower for longer. Personally - I don't do that as my job is physical and I need lunch to keep going. But I will often not have breakfast, apart from a coffee with cream. It isn't necessarily disordered eating to have one meal a day - especially if that person is a healthy weight and the contents of the meal are healthy.

Lunch is always a salad with protein such as tuna/cheese , and a lot of different veg along with coleslaw/pickles/olives etc.

Supper is some form of protein with a again a lot of veg. Cauliflower rice (not real rice). Occasionally a small amount of potatoes - but generally not.

A small bar of 85% dark chocolate as a treat after supper.

Catswillbecats · 22/10/2023 07:09

This time last year I was on the two week glucose monitor with Zoe. When my results came out the best day for blood sugar stability was the day we went out for breakfast. Usually I would eat porridge or yoghurt. On this day I had a vegetarian full English of 2 poached eggs, beans, halloumi, avocado and mushrooms, nothing else as I don't eat bread. I was full all day and even though I am a persistent snacker usually, on that day I had no desire to eat anything else until about 6pm and then it was just something light.
I couldn't eat that on a work day as I start work at 7.30 but I do think that having a decent breakfast (for me) with protein, fat and carbs is key to not grazing all day.

Aparecium · 22/10/2023 08:24

Anon_92 · 21/10/2023 20:52

And do you guys feel hungry between meals? How do you cope with the low mood/hunger between?

When I eat low-carb I rarely feel hungry or get low between meals. I generally eat four times a day: breakfast, lunch, supper, and a snack either mid-afternoon or late evening.

I don't worry about whether what I eat is high in fat or calories, just whether it is high in carbs. So I avoid things like bread, pasta, rice, cereal, sugar.

I also have this snacking philosophy:

If you're hungry between meals, have a hot drink. If you're still hungry, have a snack. If you're still hungry, your hunger was not for food - you are hungry for attention/affection/interest, so do something about them.

Westfacing · 22/10/2023 08:43

A typical day:

Full fat yoghurt and small amount of chopped frozen fruit, large proper coffee with milk

Two fried in olive oil eggs, medium sized avocado, few cherry tomatoes

Chicken traybake of two large thighs and a large mound of aubergines, peppers, red onions, etc., made with a generous glug of olive oil. Two glasses of wine

Fortunately I don't have a sweet tooth, so no puddings, cakes, biscuits, etc. I wouldn't say I don't ever snack, just that it's not a part of a typical day. I usually have two teas and two coffees per day.

I live alone for most of the time so it's easy not to have snacky foods to hand!

Nodashians · 22/10/2023 08:53

OP could you try having your dinner later without your DC so you don’t feel as rushed?Or while you are getting used to this have half at your normal time and half later on in the evening?
I used to be a terrible evening snacker so know how hard it is, I used to connect relaxing on the sofa with scoffing a box of maltesers etc.

Why so sneery? The OP asked what people who don’t snack ate and we are telling her. People that do snack won’t be posting as that’s not what the OP asked for. Personally I had to change my diet as I was borderline pre diabetic, absolutely zero to do with a ‘stealth boast’.

aswarmofmidges · 22/10/2023 09:36

When you say pudding is the gateway to other crap

Does that mean you feel you failed by eating pudding and so carry on failing

Or do you mean you think it messes with your metabolism and makes it harder for you not to eat in the evening ?

Do you need to give up snacking ( or are you trying to lose weight or tackle health issue ) or do you just think it's better not to snack ( which isn't true for everyone )
