Mirena coil for heavy periods

SuperfastJellyfish · 01/03/2023 19:21

Would you recommend the mirena coil for heavy periods? Since turning 40 my periods have become ludicrously heavy. Flooding and huge clots. It's really getting me down. I'm on my sixth pair of knickers today as I have leaked through super tampons and pads. Luckily I WFH but I'm bound to get caught out at some point if this happens every month.

Absolutely. It was life changing for me. Intermittent bleeding for a few months, then nothing. Wonderful!

IceCreamWithSprinkles · 01/03/2023 19:27

Personally, it’s been amazing for me. I used to go through a super plus extra tampon (the biggest ones you can get) in 40 mins sometimes, and I basically didn’t leave the house for the first few days, had to set alarms through the night to change etc.
I got the Mirena coil in Nov 21 and bled fairly continuously with a week or 2 break for 3-4 months (but not too heavy), and since then it’s got more and more light and predictable. Now, I get a “proper period” about every 3 months, with nothing or the lightest spotting inbetween, and just when I would have been due a period. And the proper periods I do get I can use a tampon for 3-4 hours before changing and go through the night without getting up, so I can live my normal life with them! Only downside I have seen is I’m more spotty, and period cramps are worse even on months when there’s no bleeding.

catchingzzzeds · 01/03/2023 19:28

It worked for me, the Mirena completely changed by life. I've now had it for over 10 years now and no periods at all.

Welshy26 · 01/03/2023 19:31

100%. I had it fitted for heavy periods. I was anaemic with them and the pain excruciating. The mirena was absolutely lifechanging. It took a few months to settle down as I had constant spotting but I no longer have periods or pain. I wish I had done it sooner.

newtowelsplease · 01/03/2023 19:34

Yes. Do it. I had one fitted for heavy periods. It is life changing in the most amazing way. I really can't over emphasise how brilliant it is not to have periods.

heretohelpGB · 01/03/2023 19:43

Cannot support the other posters enough! My GP recommended it and I was VERY sceptical. 2 years in and to say it has been life changing is such an understatement.
I have heard it does not work for everyone and I even had to have it put in twice - first disappeared by the time of the initial check up!! But it really is worth a try as if it works for you...wow!

toodlesofoodles · 01/03/2023 19:57

I had a mirena for this exact reason, and while I still get periods they are sporadic and very light. I'll take that any day over having to change a super tampon every 30 mins sometimes every 2 weeks.

trevthecat · 01/03/2023 20:04

I have absolutely no bleeding with the marina. It has changed my life

trevthecat · 01/03/2023 20:04

Mirena sorry. Damn autocorrect

BraveMaeve · 01/03/2023 20:06

Agree with other posters, it's been brilliant for me.

Abra1t · 01/03/2023 20:07

I had one at nearly 56 and wish I’d done it at least 20 years earlier.

JoeMaplin · 01/03/2023 20:07

They do help around 80 % of people. Not me unfortunately, I’m 3 months past hysterectomy. But you’ll have to try mirena before any other treatment anyway and chances are it will help.

BertaHoon · 01/03/2023 20:10

Yes, I love it!

Had it in at 35, still got same one in at 47. Luckily not using it for contraception 🤣

Still no bleeding. The first 3 months were a bit hit and miss, so I'd always carry a pad or a yellow Tampax... I'd never used a yellow Tampax in my life - I was straight on to super plus.

Life saver for me as I'd have pain ovulating and terrible PMT. None of those.

SuperfastJellyfish · 01/03/2023 20:11

Thanks all! You've convinced me to give it a try! If it's so successful for so many of you, it's gotta be worth a shot. Thanks for the replies 😊 x

Good luck!

Don't forget things will be a bit iffy whilst it's settling, but I can't recommend sticking with it enough.

SuperfastJellyfish · 01/03/2023 20:15

@BertaHoon thank you! I will give it a proper chance and anticipate it may take a few months to start helping.

You're welcome. Bye bye periods!

Runaround50 · 01/03/2023 20:26

I bled frequently on HRT patches and progesterone tablets. It was the absolute pits, as I am post menopause.

I reluctantly had a mirena fitted last May and zero bleeding! I can use whatever oestrogen I want at whatever dose and I don't bleed.

An amazing device!!

Nottodaty · 01/03/2023 20:31

Give it time to settle.

As others said it has changed my life, just being able to not wake up in the morning without fear & going into work knowing it would be ok. I’m on my second one and yes it was ouchy to put in - I may have swore quite badly.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 01/03/2023 20:48

It was life-changing for me, so I would definitely recommend giving it a try.

hedwigismyowl · 01/03/2023 20:53

Agree with others, it's been great for my flooding, anaemia and period pain.

Be aware tho that I had spotting and slight period pain, as in 2 out of 10, every day for the first 6 weeks.

But I just thought my body trying to expel a foreign object and it'll stop eventually, which it did.

Wish I had it done years earlier!!!

Mumma2Ro · 01/03/2023 23:03

Yes 100% worked wonders for me and my heavy periods! I love it

Celia24 · 01/03/2023 23:21

I had mine fitted a few months ago to help with heavy periods.

My next period was heavy and I'm bleeding on and off 10 days later. Im told it will take time to settle.down...

ChoccyJules · 01/03/2023 23:25

Can those further on than me (had it five weeks) say if any headaches/acne eventually died down?

PaulaPaola · 01/03/2023 23:30

I had belly ache and bleeding for 6 months but after that it worked well and I had no period for nine years . Onto my third and final one now - do now bleed a little bit these days but I wonder how bad it would be without?
