Is it a bad idea to get the coil fitted then go straight out for a fancy lunch?

Friend’s 40th birthday lunch has booked in for weeks and have first ever coil fitting booked the morning of that day. Is it horrendous to have it fitted and is it stupid to do it 3 hours before I’m about to go out for my friend’s 40th? Will I feel rough? Clinic really busy and didn’t want to have to put it off any longer. But also don’t want to ruin my rare child free day out with friends. Thanks for your advice.

I needed to go home after as I had quite bad cramps for a few hours

Rainbowshit · 21/10/2022 14:49

It would be a terrible idea. I nearly passed out first time and then felt very unwell for the rest of the day.

Second and third time I was a bit more prepared and was able to take to my bed for the rest of the day.

ceecee32 · 21/10/2022 14:50

In my experience it would be a foolish thing to do. I was shaking from head to toe

TiddleyWink · 21/10/2022 14:51

I would have been fine. There’s just no way to know which you will be!

YingMei · 21/10/2022 14:52

I had one on Tuesday. It was painful to have in then I fainted. I've also still got cramps today and they were bad on Tuesday. I wouldn't go out after, I underestimated the procedure

AllTrussdUp · 21/10/2022 14:52

I felt perfectly normal afterwards and would have been fine.

Skinnermarink · 21/10/2022 14:52

I was told I could have it fitted in my lunch hour, which was a filthy bastard lie as I passed out, was told ‘it shouldn’t be that bad’ so I hobbled back to work and spent the afternoon bleeding and cramping in agony in the toilets. Sorry OP.

Karmakamelion · 21/10/2022 14:53

I felt awful and I would not have been able to enjoy anything. I needed my bed and a hot water bottle.

ManxRhyme · 21/10/2022 14:53

I was actually OK despite never having had the coil before. Helps if you previously had a normal vaginal delivery. I took brufen and paracetamol an hour before the fitting and was surprisingly totally fine after.

Go ahead with the plans but warn your friend you may need to cancel if you are feeling too rough?

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 21/10/2022 14:54

I've had 3 - hurts like buggery when they insert them, but fine afterwards

PeloFondo · 21/10/2022 14:54

To add I've had three copper coils fitted, and I take pain relief before but have still struggled after. I do have bad periods too so am used to the pain!

mast0650 · 21/10/2022 14:55

I'd have been absolutely fine. Barely noticeable. But clearly others have a different experience so maybe not the best plan if it's the first time and you have a choice.

DorotheaFrazil · 21/10/2022 14:55

I'd have been fine to go out for lunch afterwards. No way of knowing which way it'll go for you 🤷🏼‍♀️

ZombeaArthur · 21/10/2022 14:57

I stupidly went to work after my first coil fitting and passed out at my desk! I had another coil fitted, this time following giving birth twice and was absolutely fine.

Personally, I wouldn’t risk it.

napody · 21/10/2022 14:57

Would have been fine after first mirena fitting. Had had vaginal deliveries and a very nice careful doctor that took a long time over fitting. But I still wouldn't risk ruining fun plans for it.

ohidoliketobe · 21/10/2022 14:58

I would have been fine, few paracetamol half hour before appointment. It was uncomfortable and a bit toe clenching, cramps for few days but nothing debilitating

(What I wasn't fine with in my whole coil experience was findong out I was 14 weeks pregnant woth surprise DC 2 years later... but that's a while other thread)

BuffaloCauliflower · 21/10/2022 14:58

I had a big BP drop during my insertion (which is common) and felt really light headed, followed by period like cramps all afternoon. I just wants to go home and eat chocolate on the sofa, which is what I did. You might be fine but it wouldn’t be my first choice to go out

exhaustedandoverthis · 21/10/2022 15:00

As you e had kids you may be fine.
I didn't feel mine being inserted and felt no pain afterwards so would have been fine. No previous coil and had 2 kids

listsandbudgets · 21/10/2022 15:02

It's a brillliant form of contraception, once it's in you can forget about it for a few years more or less.

First one was fine - just some very mild cramps.

Second one dreadful, I cramped, I bled, I cried and I could barely stand upright for rest of the day.

I'm getting another at the end of this month and actually worrying about it..

Keep with your plans but be prepared to cancel or go home early.

BigMamaFratelli · 21/10/2022 15:04

I was fine after and walked back to work. Pretty sure I went out for after work drinks too.

Puppypads · 21/10/2022 15:07

I had my second one fitted last week. Bit of bleeding and I was a bit achey but I would have been fine going out for lunch! As it was I walked the dog and picked the kids up from school, normal service!
TMI but it was tricker with the second one as I wasn't on my period at the time so they had to use a cervical dilator Shock and I was still fine. And I'm not especially tough!

zara5897 · 21/10/2022 15:10

I was in agony for 24 hours. I almost went to A&E - I had a hot water bottle strapped to my belly and was crying. Deffo re-schedule.

Bim2021 · 21/10/2022 15:26

I was fine after and found the speculum more painful than the insertion, it was 8 weeks after birth which probably helped. I was really worried prior, but needn’t have been. Hope it is the same for you.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 21/10/2022 15:35

I had to go to bed after mine - definitely couldn’t have gone for lunch or to work. I felt a bit rough for the next few days with bad cramps but totally able to go about my normal business.

belimoo · 21/10/2022 15:39

I couldn't do anything but lie on my bed in agony after having mine fitted. A colleague had one in the morning before work. She came straight to work afterwards, immediately threw up and went home again.

How these things ever became commonplace is astonishing.
