Abnormal smear

I've just had my smear results and they've found HPV and low grade dyskaryosis to cells.

I don't want to google I'm already an anxious person as it is, what next? What happens after the colposcopy if anything further is found.

They'll probably do a biopsy and / or LLETZ treatment to remove the cells. More than likely that will be it for a couple of years.

MsMoody · 17/10/2022 21:28

If the smear is showing low grade dyskaryosis it is very unlikely you’ll need any treatment- possibly a biopsy at most and will be asked to have a repeat smear in 6 months or a year to see if it clears up on its own. Don’t worry yourself too much at this stage!

Thankyou that's reassuring, I'm getting a little worked up about it all so that's put my mind at ease.

I'm trying my best to not get over anxious over this, I keep thinking about how I've put down changes to my cycle and flow down to my age. Now I'm worried it's more serious I often get period type pains and lower back ache, my cycle is much shorter and heavier.
I'm due on at the weekend and all this week I've had period pains and backache.

I had this, and had another smear done in hospital outpatients followed up with LLETZ treatment about 4 weeks after. It wasn't much to worry about as they use a local anaesthetic, and I've had normal smears for many years since - initially I had them every 3 months, then 6 months, then yearly and eventually 3 yearly again.

I think mine were graded as CIN 3 but I'd had no symptoms at all.

Sunshineandflipflops · 19/10/2022 15:00

Hi - I had an HPV diagnosis at my last smear and I have managed to book myself in for another one next month, which will be 10 months after the last one as It has also been on my mind. I am hoping it has cleared up by itself but I guess it's normal to worry.

mothertrucking · 19/10/2022 15:07

Like most women I don't like having a smear but I'm always on time to have them apart from this year. I was probably 8-10 months late having this one.
Everyone keeps telling me how it will be ok but I just have this horrible anxious feeling about it.

tickticksnooze · 19/10/2022 15:16

It's not cancer.

tickticksnooze · 19/10/2022 15:17

Cervical screening isn't even a test for cancer, it's just monitoring the health of your cervix.

You would be on a totally different pathway if cancer was in point.

catfunk · 19/10/2022 15:40

I had treatment for this in my 20s - biopsy then LLETZ.
It was swift and not exactly comfortable but fine, and no issues ever since. Try not to worry.

mothertrucking · 19/10/2022 16:24

Thankyou all for the replies, I know I'm getting myself in a tizz when it's probably not necessary!
It's not easy sometimes being a born worrier.

So, tomorrow is my colposcopy.
I'm being to feel a bit nervous about it and don't know what to expect.

Is it like having a smear test? If they do a biopsy will it hurt? How long does the procedure take? The hospital have sent me no information about anything to do with the procedure.

I'm having it done mid morning so I just keep trying to remind myself it'll be over and done with by lunchtime and I'll be home.

It's just like a smear and Lasts about 10 minutes. I had a biospy taken, it didn't hurt. They put dye inside you to highlight abnormal cells. Take a pad with you for the residual dye that comes out and any v minor bleeding from the biopsy.

Op I was exactly the same as you. It was fine though. X

Thankyou ever so much, that's put my mind at ease a little. I'm planning on taking a couple of paracetamol about 30-60 mins before my appointment just in case I have any discomfort. I'm not sure whether they'll take a biopsy as I have low grade dyskariosis but I'm expecting it to happen.
I'm glad to hear it doesn't last long I'm not good in hospital environments at the best of times.

I'm terrible at anything medical. The mental pain by far out-wayed the physical pain. They had pads there for me to use after. I went home for a bath. No tampons or sex for a few days, my bleeding lasted that afternoon only and was literally a few spots. Didn't really need to use a pad.
You will be fine xxx

Redwineandroses · 24/11/2022 20:13

I had the exact some thing OP and when I read up about it, 80% of the population get HPV at some point in their lives and the low grade abnormal cells are just changes in normal cells which could and I emphasise could not will turn cancerous if left unchecked in 5-10 years so it's a really early preventive thing.

The procedure took about 10 minutes, it was all very dignified and the biopsy was fine, they gave me a squeezy ball to squeeze but tbh I didn't need it. They gave me a pad to wear after but I didn't have any bleeding. The only thing I had after was my period, which was due that week, was a week late and it lasted longer than usual, but that might be just a personal thing.

The nurse said it didn't look like there was anything serious to worry about from the examination and I'll get the results within 4 weeks.

It's all very early measures to prevent anything more serious in years to come 🙂

MsMoody · 24/11/2022 22:37

I’ve had 3 colposcopies and they take a bit longer than a smear but probably less uncomfortable! The colposcopists are really good at what they do and you barely feel them down there at all.

mothertrucking · 25/11/2022 11:42

It's done, took less than 5 mins. It wasn't as bad as I anticipated, I found out my cervix is tilted which caused me discomfort. I had a punch biopsy done and have to wait 6-8 weeks for results. Colposcopist could see the HPV on the screen and she seems to think I have CIN1 but said she wants to see what the results come back as before being 100%

I've spent the rest of the day in bed resting. I'm going to go downstairs shortly to watch the football and maybe have a glass of wine or two to unwind.

How did you get on OP? I've had a colposcopy and biopsy today!

mothertrucking · 23/01/2023 22:17

All good, got results after 7 weeks have to have a follow up smear in 12 months.

That's fab red and reassuring to hear!

kerkyra · 23/01/2023 22:42

I also had a colposcopy and biopsy today. Your news fills me with hope.

SkaterGrrrrl · 23/01/2023 22:56

I had a colposcopy and biopsy a couple of weeks ago, followed by loop diathermy excision of the cervix. Taking it easy now and waiting while they check the removed the cells to make sure they got everything. Hospital staff were unbelievably reassuring and kind.

I'm telling my friends and sister to go for their smear tests and vaccinate their daughters against HPV!

Good luck kerkyra and mothertrucking.

Well done OP! I got a phone call from the Dr today saying my smear was abnormal. Somehow just hearing the word 'abnormal' is quite worrying but this thread has been really reassuring about the next steps and the fact it's very unlikely to be serious at this stage.
