Meds for heavy period?

Skala123 · 27/09/2022 20:22

I'm struggling with very heavy and long periods so have been prescribed Tranexamic acid. Can't find much online about it so wondered if anyone has used it for heavy periods? Would like to hear your experience

It didn't really help me so I was prescribed provera to stop the bleeding. That worked within a couple of days

TheHumanExperience · 27/09/2022 20:51

Provera I'm sure is banned in some countries because it causes fertility problems latter on. They still allow its use here also in Africa. I haven't researched elsewhere.

I used evening primrose oil religiously when I had terrible heavy bleeds. It helped and it learned up my PCOS with a low car diet and an I crease in Omega 3s.

It may be worth looking into.

thestringcheesemassacre · 27/09/2022 20:57

I was prescribed it for a while whilst waiting for a hysterectomy. It did work but, rather grossly, my periods became quite clotty. But better than a flood I think.
good luck!

baxterbee · 27/09/2022 21:02

I've been prescribed it recently and on day 2 of cycle so will wait and see if it works!

RIPWalter · 27/09/2022 21:05

Significantly increased protein intake (protein powder) helps me with my heavy periods.

20DigitCombination · 27/09/2022 22:58

Have you had a gynae referral? If not ask for one to rule out underlying conditions.

Iamthewombat · 27/09/2022 23:21

I find it useful. My periods have got worse during peri, and tranexamic acid helps to stem the flood. It doesn’t reduce the overall amount of blood, in my experience, but spreads it out more evenly, which makes that time of the month easier to manage.

wannarunfromitall · 27/09/2022 23:49

Following -my periods are ridiculous and I prob need this. I got the maximum modibodi period pants, and at work on my heaviest day I was using a super plus Tampax every 45 mins - an hour, and it was soaking through to the period pants which was fine, but I left one in for an hour and a half without changing and my supposed 24hrs of flow pants needed changing as they were on the verge of leaking.

nightbulb · 28/09/2022 00:00

Sorry to hear this op, I haven’t tried it but might do. I never used to have problems with leaking but also often end up going out with midi nodi, and a towel and a superplus because I’m so paranoid about not being able to clear up

I had endometrial resection for bicornate uterus, PCOS and fibroids. It was only possible when I finished having children. Before then it was pampers nappies and changing the mattress 3 times a year as no protection worked at night. However, life changing surgery. I was house bound with the bleeding and very anaemic before having it done. Please be referred to a gynaecologist so you can look into options, and get your blood tested for deficiency.

20DigitCombination · 28/09/2022 19:02

Please don't accept this as a normal part of peri menopause. I went through similar and it was due to large fibroids.

I have bicornuate uterus too. It's oily upon reading your post that I'm wondering if my obscenely heavy periods post kids have something to do with this?

I don't know what endometrial resection is - can you summarise?

declutteringmymind · 28/09/2022 21:52

I use Tranexamic acid successfully but I also had a pelvic scan to rule out other clauses, so please get a referral if you haven't had one.

It works for me. Basically gets bleeding down to 10%. It does stretch it abit from 2.5 day to 3.5 but I can live with that. It also makes my bowels move quicker. Not diarrhoea but a good clear out. I'd say if it's the only thing about peri that's bothering you at the moment then give it a go, just get a scan first

DrDetriment · 28/09/2022 21:54

Tranexamic acid just gave me 21 day periods as in I bled for 21 days. I am waiting for an endometrial ablation instead.

wannarunfromitall · 28/09/2022 22:01

What is an ablation?

wannarunfromitall · 28/09/2022 22:03

Ah I've just googled it. I need this

Lightningrain · 28/09/2022 22:08

I took it as a teenager but it used to give me stomach ache and nausea. I ended up switching to the combined pill which solved the issue completely.

Now as a forty something With fibroids and no longer taking the pill the heavy periods are back with a vengeance. I find taking some ibuprofen on day 2 helps with the pain, reduces the flow slightly and helps the related bowel issues! I might consider trying the medication again as the nausea/stomach ache is preferable to being housebound for 2-3 days each month.

20DigitCombination · 28/09/2022 22:45

@Lightningrain have you looked into getting a gynae review and possibly having a mirena coil for the bleeding?

Lightningrain · 29/09/2022 09:41

@20DigitCombination I have considered the mirena coil but I also suffer with hormonal acne and my GP said it can often exacerbate acne so I was reluctant to attempt to solve one issue and make another worse.

I’ve had some gynae tests done and all they found was an old cyst and a couple of fibroids which they said was probably the reason for my symptoms. I suppose I’ve just accepted that I’ll have to live with it now until menopause. I know there are lots of women with the same (and worse) so I’ve come to accept it as one of those things and manage it as best I can.

I already have 100-120g of protein a day including protein powder

Yes it was a gynaecologist I saw - internal exam and ultrasound were all done at the appointment so anything nasty has been ruled out - likely be age apparently ☹️

Goodness this sounds awful, you poor thing. So glad you've had help. Iron deficiency confirmed by blood tests so am taking a supplement. Ultrasound has ruled out anything serious

Thanks everyone for all the replies. How shit is it that so many of us have to live with this. I've had a scan and internal exam to rule out anything nasty and blood test confirmed iron deficiency so now taking supps. Going to give the meds a go, although worried about it spreading the bleeding out because my periods are already 8-12 days long
