Meds for heavy period?

I'm struggling with very heavy and long periods so have been prescribed Tranexamic acid. Can't find much online about it so wondered if anyone has used it for heavy periods? Would like to hear your experience

I am taking it the last 5 years. I do have a break every few months but go back on it as periods are so heavy. Scans have ruled out cysts or fibroids. I had the mirena for 6 months but had to have it removed due to awful side effects. The only other option for me is a hysterectomy (41) which I don't want. I've had hormones checked and I'm nowhere near menopause or peri menopause either.

It makes the difference between period being manageable or me being house bound. It takes about a day to kick in, though, so the first day of irregular period can still be a bit of a horror show.

I had fibroids and flooding periods. They gave me this and it reduced the bleeding a bit, but I started to pass HUGE blood clots. One was the size of an egg.

I stopped using it and tried Raspberry Leaf tablets (from Holland & Barrett). They worked really well. They're only cheap and reduced my bleeding by I'd say around 30%_50%, and stopped the cramping.

I also tried an ablation (great for a year), mini pill (didn't help), and the Mirena coil (great, but didn't reduce my periods).

I ended up having a hysterectomy. But while I was on the waiting list, the raspberry leaf pills worked the best out of anything.

That's really interesting. I'd only heard of raspberry leaf tea being used to bring on labour!

I don't really want to take ibuprofen long term though. I don't have any pain with my periods, just flooding

I have and do use tranexamic acid for my periods - I was having to change my menstrual cup every 2 hours for the first 24-48 hours of my period, then would have 3-4 days of much lighter flow.
Initially I took the prescribed dose (2 tablets 3x daily from period starting I believe) but realised that it seemed to really work for me and I could just take one or two doses in the first 24 hours which would reduce both heaviness and total blood loss.

Ponstan helped me when my pain used to literally floor me - had endometriosis but was diagnosed too late for treatment - please get thoroughly checked out OP

My 15 year old DD was prescribed it 3 weeks ago as she's been on her period for a month. It reduced the flow but she passed awful clots. This was better than the heavy flow she said.

Skala123 · 03/10/2022 21:49

Sounds like I may need to be prepared for clots too. Due on any day now so will see what happens

Same! I'd never heard of them. I was in town and walked past H&B. I saw they had a poster in their window saying they'd won awards for their knowledge, or something. It said, "Feel free to ask us for advice!" So I went in and said, "This is gory, but I have horrendous, torrential periods." The woman just grabbed the pills straight away and said they were effective for heavy periods.

I wasn't expecting anything at all, but they REALLY helped. The bleeding reduced a lot and the cramps vanished.
