Untreatable yeast infection?

merrymelodies · 24/05/2022 20:00

My DD has seen three different doctors at our family practice and they've each given her a different treatment for her yeast infection. Nothing works. She's in tears because she's afraid it's incurable. I made yet another appointment for her but meanwhile, I'm trying to reassure and comfort her. Can anyone help, please?

Has anyone suggested looking at changing her diet? I'm no medic but have a vague memory that a sugar-free diet can help yeast infections.

Mamette · 24/05/2022 20:05

Has she tried:

  • giving up sugar

  • only cotton knickers

  • no tight jeans or trousers

  • no polyester trousers

?

Does she have a partner and has he been treated?

DonGray · 24/05/2022 20:07

Grapefruit seed extract - tablets or capsules

elephantbreathing · 24/05/2022 20:10

A good daily probiotic will help.
Symprove worked for me after months of a fungal infection and various meds.
It was a really miserable time.
It's expensive but worth it.

Eastereggglutton · 24/05/2022 20:15

Does she know what strain if candidia she has? You could try a private focus medical test I believe that would tell you the strain. Candidia galbrata is more resistant to the azole drugs.

Yes, she has a partner. She says he hasn't been checked because he doesn't have any symptoms (I just told her that he should be checked). Barring that, is it possible that she has some kind of super-yeast that isn't curable? That's what's really worrying us! Dr Google is no help. DD says that she found out that a certain fungus can be lethal.

Go to a sexual health clinic.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 24/05/2022 20:50

He doesn’t have to have symptoms but if he isn’t being treated it is possible that he is reinfecting her.

Giveitall · 24/05/2022 20:52

Are you talking about thrush?
She might be “allergic” to spermicide or rubber/latex in condoms?
I was.
Changed my contraceptive & thrush went away. Never had it since.

MrOllivander · 24/05/2022 20:55

These are good. I had a bad bout and they ended up giving me a pessary to use every month for 6 months whether I had it or not and that shifted it
Iron crotch of knickers and make sure they're cotton

Adding to the allergy list, I get fearsome thrush from scented sanitary towels.

Tidypidy · 24/05/2022 21:03

I had a cyclical thrush infection that went on for nearly 12 months. Eventually saw the woman's health nurse at gp and was prescribed 6 months of tablets. It got rid of it as it broke the cycle.

AnnaMagnani · 24/05/2022 21:05

Presuming you mean thrush.

Yes, partner needs treating even if he has no symptoms.

Going to Sexual Health Clinic is good - they are the experts in this.

merrymelodies · 24/05/2022 21:11

We don't have sexual health clinics here in Canada, unfortunately. Seeing three different doctors, getting three different treatments over two months isn't ideal. They tested her for STDs (negative) but didn't do a culture for the candida.

DD says it hurts. Burning, itchy... 😩

He needs to be treated, i suspect they're just passing it between them

11GrumpsaGrumping · 24/05/2022 21:19

Op, they do have sexual health clinics in Canada!

Regardless, it's probably recurring because he isn't getting treated. Men often don't show symptoms the way women do, but can reinfect nonetheless.

They both need to get treated at the same time and abstain from sex for 7 days.

She needs to wear only cotton knickers, make sure she wipes front to back, wee immediately after sex, and ensure she is not using any scented or heavy products to cleanse her vagina- water is fine. If they use condoms (doesn't sound like they do), might be worthwhile trying latex free.

Has he been tested for STIs?

Is she sure it's thrush? What are her symptoms?

11GrumpsaGrumping · 24/05/2022 21:19

PS I work in sexual health

BeanAnTae · 24/05/2022 21:30

Is she allergic to thrush cream? I get dermatitis due to thrush itself and the creams so that the thrush returns due to micro tears in the skin.

I now treat thrush with oral medication and have trimovate cream prescribed - steroid, anti fungal, anti biotic cream.

I can't wear tight trousers or have hot baths with even plain water. Heat causes thrush to come back.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/05/2022 21:32

She needs a long course of oral anti fungals.

This is the story of my life. I abandoned all conventional treatment in the end.

If it’s reciting them it’s sometimes an auto immune reaction. There was a thread in this last week.

ChewtonBunny · 24/05/2022 22:02

He needs to be treated

There's no point her treating herself if he just reinfects her

Bloops · 24/05/2022 22:23

Partner needs treating ASAP. They couk
