Ovulation pain?

Thisisnofun · 29/01/2022 10:37

I have woken up this morning with quite severe cramping and a searing pain in my groin and back. At one point I couldn't sit down because it felt like i was sitting on a knife. The pain was also up my back passage. I can only kind of relate this to the feeling of contractions.

I am ovulating I know that much - has anyone else had this kind of thing caused by ovulation?

I stopped the pill around 6 months ago and my last period was painful which I don't usually have. I'm also approaching 45 and think I can feel a change in my body starting.

I started getting this when I turned 42. Some months its so bad I feel like I need to get to hospital, but it only lasts about 20 mins or so.

Sorry, no explanation but wanted to let you know you aren't alone

Icecreamandapplepie · 29/01/2022 10:40

Obviously, if thespian continues for a length of time, you may need to be seen...

Icecreamandapplepie · 29/01/2022 10:40

The pain

Thankyou. About an hour ago I was convinced something was seriously wrong.

I woke up fine it was after going to the loo that the pain started. It seems to be subsiding now.

The knife like pain up my bottom and the front was horrid.

I wondering if I have endometriosis especially after the horrid period I had last month.

Thisisnofun · 29/01/2022 15:28

Well the pain I had this morning thats subsided but I feel very sore and tender in my womb area and I have lower back ache. Feeling really washed out and tired and keep feeling like I'm going to have an upset stomach.

I winced in recognition at all those symptoms and in my case endometriosis was the cause.

Endometriosis is a distinct possibility here and cannot be ruled out. Any pain that is cyclical in nature and/or gets worse up to and including menses should be checked out by a gynae to see if endometriosis is present. Your GP should refer you to such a person.

TheSnowyOwl · 29/01/2022 15:31

Endometriosis causes this for me as well. Do speak to your doctor because there might be something that will help.

Thisisnofun · 29/01/2022 15:35

Thankyou both for your replies. This has happened before but not for some time. I think being on the pill has masked it and now I no longer take it I'm slowly starting to get symptoms. I could barely stand up straight this morning the pain was so intense - it felt like labour it's the only way I can describe it.
Last month my period made me feel so ill but I'm bang in the middle of my cycle now and I can only assume it's ovulation that caused this today.

The pain up my bum was horrific. I'm kind of pleased to read that people have said that they felt the same as me and it's endometriosis. I have been worrying myself stupid panicking about it.

I will call my GP on Monday and hope I can get through to someone.

I hope your GP is supportive and can help. I found the pill did help me with regards to removing ovulation pain.

flowers0412 · 29/01/2022 15:45

Just chiming in to add another endometriosis cause to the list.
Ovulation pain for me in the worst time of the month and the stabbing pain was the first symptom that was taken seriously and not shrugged of as "prob an Sti" 😔🤬

Hlglu56 · 29/01/2022 16:33

I have this too at ovulation. There’s been times I’ve been tempted to call an ambulance because the pains been that bad but then it will just go away. I also get the pain in the bottom too.

Javelin arse as it's known on mumsnet - have a search

Haha. That's actually appropriate 😂 I'm going to have a search now!

Hi @Thisisnofun, I posted on the Javelin arse thread earlier today.
I suffer with all that you describe. Kicks in around day 11 of my cycle and then calms down a couple of days before my period begins.
The very best thing for me re javelin arse are to insert two haemorrhoid suppositories the instant I get that awful sensation. Works like a dream. Some months are worse than others in all respects. I’m 46 and have had tons of scans - I know endo is unlikely to be spotted this way- but consultants seem to be of the mind that I should just tolerate it.

LeftieLucy · 30/01/2022 22:51

Thank you for posting this thread OP.

I get horrible pain when I’m ovulating from the right ovary - not dissimilar to the pain of a kidney stone I once had.

I’ve been fobbed off by the doctor for years but I never knew endometriosis could be a cause! I’m going to read up and go back to the gp.

lovescaca · 30/01/2022 22:54

Snds exactly like my ovulation pain

Thisisnofun · 02/02/2022 08:02

I've managed to get a GP telephone appointment but until next Tuesday.
I've just had the shooting pains again so not sure whether to try and get one sooner.

Thisisnofun · 02/02/2022 12:05

I've managed to speak to a GP who wasn't exactly helpful and asked me what I thought it was! Anyway he's said I need to be checked over at the practice then I'm likely to be referred for an ultrasound.

Day 14 of my cycle again and here we go again. I can feel ov pain starting Confused

Any pain that is cyclical in nature and or gets worse up to and including menses should be checked out for endometriosis.

Checking you over at the practice may well be a waste of time, you need them to give you a referral.

An internal ultrasound scan will NOT detect endometriosis if it is there. You need a gynaecologist referral from the GP.

thisisnofun · 24/02/2022 11:34

Thankyou. It's definitely cyclical, when I saw a nurse practitioner she just prescribed me buscopan. I have a further appointment with a GP on Monday so I'm going to ask for further tests when I speak to him.

OP posts:
AttilaTheMeerkat · 24/02/2022 13:02

You should be aware that endometriosis if present is usually only diagnosed through a laparoscopy op (this is keyhole surgery). Other tests like blood tests etc do not usually detect endometriosis if present so I would be asking for a referral to be made. This type of issue is well outside a GPs general remit in any case, it needs a specialist.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 24/02/2022 13:03

If you do not already do so do start keeping a daily pain and symptom diary noting everything; this will also give the gynae clues.

user375432 · 18/03/2022 14:32

OP, I have the same symptoms. Horrible pains at ovulation and periods, it's been getting worse and worse for the last 4 years. It could also he fibroids, which I believe can he diagnosed from an ultrasound.

BellaW · 12/03/2024 22:07

I accidentally discovered this pain is linked to DEHYDRATION. If you are well hydrated there will be no pain. If it is painful, drink water and the pain will go away in about 10 minutes...I am very surprised to see no advice on this and I had been seeing GP in the past who had no clue how to help...
