PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) is ruining my life

PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) is ruining my life, my relationship and my career.

I never even knew it was such a thing until a few years ago but each month I go into a rage, I hate everyone, I'm nasty, say things I don't mean (but at the time I really do mean it) I feel depressed and anxious witn it. I'll then go okay for a few weeks and then bang it's back.
Anyone else have this and is it worth seeing g

I had this not as bad but depression before bad and intrusive thoughts. Probable about twice a year would feel suicidal but could tell period was due by random suicidal thoughts for no logical reason. GP gave Prozac to take 7 days before and helped so much. Even when cycle lengths meant some months would only be 3-4 days. For me soon as period arrived it would all be gone in about 6h it was so bizarre. Don’t suffer when there are things you can try

I think I've got this. Have walked out of several jobs before having my kids. My friend has it and they prescribed her Yaz contraceptive pill and she's been great since. I can't take due to migraines. I feel your pain. I've just had my first period after my second child was born and it's been horrendous.

DaisyArtichoke7 · 24/11/2021 07:39

I went through this living hell for about 5 years but I'm now better. The rage was awful and I was shaking with anxiety then fine for 2 weeks and repeat. Dr advised VitB6. I also take Agnus Castus and Wassen Magnesium monthly cycle support. The other thing is a lot of walking and a good diet with nuts and turkey which are supposedly good mood foods. I really hope things improve for you x

I came here to post a thread asking the same thing. I am suffering now with extreme anxiety, uncontrollable crying and suicidal thoughts. I’ve been tracking the symptoms for a few months now and it’s clear that they appear at the exact same point every month. I’ve made a GP appointment for next week but am so worried about being dismissed/told it’s just normal PMS. If anyone has any tips on how best to broach this with the GP that would be great, as I have heard many are dismissive or aren’t even aware of PMDD

Jobseeker19 · 24/11/2021 18:44

I have this and take magnesium, st johns wort and Angus catus everyday which helps

SilkLabrador · 24/11/2021 19:25

I have this, ended up on Citalopam but am now on Yazmin oral contraceptive and I feel like a new person. It got to the point I was worried I was going to harm my family, I would have the worst rage and anger and then during my period I would have awful fatigue and get so sad.

This is much better recognised recently. The RCOG have produced guidance. If your GP hasn't come across it signpost them here- www.rcog.org.uk/en/guidelines-research-services/guidelines/gtg48/

Me too Sad

I’ve started on the Eloine (Yaz) pill, which has helped a bit, but I still get horribly ragey about a week before the end of the pack.

I don’t know what to do. I feel like I’m ruining my kid’s childhood.

bluejelly · 24/11/2021 22:05

Prozac is immensely helpful with PMS. Ask your GP

RagzReturnsRebooted · 24/11/2021 22:08

I thought I had this, but since being diagnosed and treated for an underactive thyroid, I only get minimal PMS symptoms. Could be a coincidence, but I used to have terrible rage with my PMT and I don't now, just a bit snappy or anxious.

2020isnotbehaving · 24/11/2021 22:09

For me 7 days meds a month made a huge difference should be so simple thing for you to try and see. For me it’s like magic

Beebyonthewold · 24/11/2021 23:21

Thank you so much NamechangeGP- that’s really helpful. It’s good to hear that this is better recognised now

CausticFairy · 25/11/2021 13:38

@riseandshine830ok I'm just starting my journey to treat PMDD. It's worth noting if you have other symptoms besides the rage. Do you have very heavy, painful periods? Is sex painful too? Do you have bloating that lasts beyond a few days? These can be signs of endo, which I'm being checked out for. I've just had thyroid tests that came back fine, so checking out other causes.

I echo what a PP said. Get help, and keep fighting until you get the help you need. Some drs are dismissive of PMDD. "Oh, it's just PMT like every female has." But if it's directly affecting your life in a negative way, there are lots of different things you can try until you find the right help.

Serenschintte · 25/11/2021 13:56

If you want to try a different route there is a diet, exercise and supplements route. Dr Maryon Stewart has several books. I did her Programme and it completely stopped my terrible PMT/PMDD I’m don’t know if she still has her Programme but there are books eg No more PMS. After three months of following it I was totally symptom free.

HereticFanjo · 25/11/2021 14:41

I've found a supplement that helps in Holland and Barrett - a perimenopause one. That and cold water swimming / showers. Might be worth a try. Generally eating lower carb also helps.

AdamRyan · 25/11/2021 14:52

I have this. Am on second line treatment (oestrogen patches and oral progesterone) but had to go private for it.

Vitamin b6 and magnesium definitely helps. The link above is useful and I've screenshot the treatment chart that you can show your gp

You’ve absolutely described how I feel every month.. and I also say awful things that I mean at the time but hate myself for later.. ive been prescribed eloine as my periods are really heavy.. I’ll keep you posted as starting them today! X

AngryAtAssholes · 13/12/2021 09:24

Hi @riseandshine830ok - I was given a diagnosis of PMDD a few years back and it turns out it was likely the start of peri menopause.

I used vitamin b6, magnesium and omega 3/6/9 as well as no alcohol, sugar or caffeine to get the initial symptoms under control which worked for a few years.

Counselling also helped.

AlbertBridge · 13/12/2021 09:30

@HereticFanjo - which supplement is helping you?

FinallySomeNormality · 28/12/2021 19:13

How much B6 do people take for this? I think I have this since having my last baby (7m ago) - constant rage and my cycles are all out of whack too (can be 28 days, can be 70 days long). I can feel my hormones are everywhere. I've also got awful insomnia around certain times in cycle.

moregarlic · 28/12/2021 19:16

I’d really recommend reading Period Repair Manual by Lara Briden Nd.

WakeUpLockie · 28/12/2021 19:17

Sertraline :) 25mg 2 weeks out of 4. People will tell you that won’t work (people on here) but it does and my GP luckily has a special interest in women’s health and PMDD. It’s a new way to use ssris and they’re still researching why it helps in the case, where for depression it can take months and high doses.

HereticFanjo · 28/12/2021 19:21

Sorry @AlbertBridge only just saw this it's called Perimenopause and Her O think. Typically I'm away from home at the minute and forgot to pack it 🙈 I had a little rage cry yesterday 5 days till my bastard period.
