Calcification on breast

Rockinghorse2019 · 11/09/2021 14:45

I really need some support I’m really struggling not sure how I am going to get through the next two weeks. Any positive stories.
I went to breast clinic yesterday as noticed some dried discharge yellow (I’ve previously posted) in my breast. Consultant was dismissive and just picked it off saying it was fine and not to worry. As I’m 42 she sent me for a mammogram. The mammogram found incidental calcification on my breast and I had to have a biopsy. The results take 2 weeks. I wasn’t really given any information or even told how to look after the biopsy dressing. Tried to phone the clinic but they are closed today. I don’t really understand. I suffer from anxiety and just keep breaking down.

Think I’ve spelt it wrong. But please any advice xx

I had a very similar experience. The consultant I saw at the beginning of my appointment was reassuring but the experience of having a biopsy was really stressful and the nurse afterwards gave me some worst-case scenarios that I didn’t really need to hear. By the time I left the clinic I had convinced myself it was bad news.

I’m fortunate to have a lovely dr friend who came round to talk me down from my spiralling anxiety - and it was all totally fine in the end. Turned out my mum has calcification too so mine was just age-related.

If you are still anxious on Monday call the clinic and ask if your results might come in earlier (mine did). If your consultant wasn’t worried then you probably shouldn’t be either (I know it’s easier said than done!)

I’m really struggling to get through the day. My husband says I’m out of control with my worrying . Spent most of the day crying my 2 year old said mummy upset 😢.
The radiography person was really doom and gloom so didn’t help.

It's not right you have to wait for the results. Keep ringing to ask when you'll get them and tell them of your anxieties. Hopefully it will turn out to be OK for you.

Rockinghorse2019 · 11/09/2021 22:34

They said it’s standard 2 weeks. I phoned a private hospital today and they said it would take 5-7 days. Not that I want the biopsy again.

They are just breast cysts as far as I know. My mum got them as she started getting older.

I think it’s normal to get them biopsied to rule out anything else but I think after the first one with her they just presumed the rest were the same so she didn’t get biopsied after that one.

The fact nobody is worried about it is a good sign.

I know it’s easy to say but please try and stop worrying. You’ll just upset your system and your child.

It’s highly likely it will just be a cyst that’s gone hard (calcification). Try and stay calm and look forward to good results. Think positive. It’s just two weeks and then you’ll be able to relax.

This is exactly what I was told when I got my negative result.

Rockinghorse2019 · 12/09/2021 12:54

Does anyone know how bad it could be or what the percentage is?

OP posts:
Rockinghorse2019 · 12/09/2021 21:40

Sorry I know I need to calm down !

OP posts:
Elieza · 13/09/2021 09:20

Dunno sorry.

Judging by how chilled and chatty not clammy the staff were I reckon they are pretty sure it’s nothing. And they see these day in day out.

Rockinghorse2019 · 16/09/2021 21:20

Thank you I’m still struggling. Is it normal to see a breast surgeon for the follow up appointment?
Any more positive stories?

I had this. They sucked out a bit more tissue, and I had mammograms for five years. Not cancer.

Rockinghorse2019 · 16/09/2021 23:21

Did you have to have a second biopsy?

OP posts:
Rockinghorse2019 · 17/09/2021 14:43

Anyone else had good news with calification biopsy?

OP posts:
MrsPnut · 17/09/2021 14:49

Usually if the calcification is ductal carcinoma in situ then they will want to remove this as it can possibly become cancerous. The tissue they have removed will be examined under a microscope and the results will be discussed at the breast team multi disciplinary meeting and the treatment for you agreed.
It is scary, and a hand hold is always needed when waiting for test results. Keep your biopsy site clean and dry for as long as possible to ensure that it heals with no infection.

Please try not to worry, for every person that has tests, very few have cancer.

Rockinghorse2019 · 17/09/2021 15:53

The letter says there is a cluster of calcification in have googled and it seems to be really bad. But the letter also said no indication of cancer. Confusing

Ok. You're spiralling. Which isn't good for you.

I think it's healthier to remember that there's not much use in worrying: it doesn't achieve anything. You can worry when there's something tangible to worry about, which isn't yet.

Let's look at the positives:

  1. You haven't ignored a problem.
  2. You have it in black and white that there's no indication of cancer.
  3. You've had additional tests to be on the safe side.

Try to focus on those things.

I know it's easy for us all to say it, but honestly, it's the truth.

Maybe, it'd be better to spend your time looking for a registered counsellor that can help with health anxiety? I mean this kindly.

Today, you are healthy. Take the wins where you can. Flowers

Rockinghorse2019 · 17/09/2021 16:09

Thank you I know you are right . I’m sat here shaking . Iv been Googling for 2 hours which isn’t helpful.

Elieza · 17/09/2021 17:50

No indication of cancer, great! That should put your mind at rest.

Remind me. When do you get to speak to a person about this so they can explain it all?

Rockinghorse2019 · 17/09/2021 18:24

See the surgeon for the biopsy results on Thursday

OP posts:
Elieza · 18/09/2021 10:26

Only a few days to go now then you can get the results and be reassured about the no cancer message.

Rockinghorse2019 · 18/09/2021 11:03

Thank you. Really struggling.
If it was something like DCIS is that common at treatable well?

OP posts:
Elieza · 18/09/2021 17:38

They said you had no sign of cancer.
Dcis is a localised cancer as far as I know.

I’m therefore presuming that’s ruled out or they wouldn’t have said you didn’t have any sign of cancer if they knew you did?

Try and find something to take your mind off this and keep concentrating on the No Sign Of Cancer message. That is a relief!

ComeBackPeterComeBackPaul · 18/09/2021 17:57

Hi. I know it’s scary but maybe my experience will help as I think it’s fairly typical. My first ever mammogram showed up calcifications and, like you I was very scared.
Actually, it seems, in my case anyway, that it has been a question of regular mammograms to monitor the situation and check there is no increase in size. I went every year for the first 4/5 years and last September they told me I could come every 2 years (I don’t live in the uk so it might be different for you) as they were satisfied that there had been no real change.
I hope you get through the next couple of weeks without too much upset and that you will hear some good news soon. Much love x.

MrsSchadenfreude · 18/09/2021 19:02

I had DCIS. It’s not cancer, but is best not left where it is. They will suck out a bit more tissue and you will have regular mammograms for five years. It IS scary, but you will feel much better when it’s over.
