Referred to breast clinic- anxiety high!

Have just been referred to breast clinic for further tests. Am so anxious, it was a routine mammogram. I rang reception at the clinic and a slightly brusque lady told me it was because “ something is there”.
Just need a handhold. Anyone had this and it turned out ok?

@BG2015
A positive story here, my mum went for mammogram in 2016, when she was 56, a lump was detected which unfortunately was cancerous. She had a operation and all was successfully taken out, she didn't loose the breast and recovered well, she takes medication and goes for regular checks, apart from that she is back to normal life, it was a very traumatic time for her and all family of course but she is doing really well now..
Wish you all the best in this worrying time, keep positive I hope everything turns out well for you and it's resolved quickly.

BG2015 · 26/06/2021 14:43

@AlwaysSeekingComfort
My lump is on the outer side of my right breast. It's quite large 2cm in diameter and fixed. It doesn't move. Feels quite squishy.

The dr said it felt like it was embedded in my breast tissue and felt similar to a cyst that could be infected but I had no pain which was unusual.

I presume from what they saw on the mammogram and ultrasound they realised it's probably cancer.

I hope you find some answers from your appointment

BG2015 · 26/06/2021 14:44

@onedream thank you, it's so lovely to hear positive stories. I'm so glad everything turned out well!

AlwaysSeekingComfort · 26/06/2021 14:57

@BG2015 thanks so much for your reply. Yes mines about 2cm too I’d say… but does move… but doesn’t mean it isn’t sinister as I’ve read on other threads.

All the best to you lovely 💐 keep us updated on how you get on

Can another anxious poster join you? Also referred to the breast clinic for a lump. 4 week wait has been shortened to 3 week wait because of new symptom of bleeding from the affected breast. A week and a half to go. Waiting is the worst.

BG2015 · 26/06/2021 19:03

@speedyhedgehog of course (although I didn't actually start this thread)
But who cares during this shitty time. We're in it together.

I'm also over on the Breast Cancer Now website which has loads of support for whatever part of this journey/hell you're on.

If you want to DM anyone I'm happy to chat

speedyhedgehog · 26/06/2021 19:07

Thanks @BG2015, hope your appointment next week gives you a clear path forward. I'm sorry we're both in this horrible situation. Wishing that the waiting goes quickly for us both and we can support each other just a little bit on here x

BG2015 · 01/07/2021 05:01

I went for my biopsy results yesterday and I have Stage 2 lobular breast cancer. I need to have an MRI which will determine what happens next, that will happen in the next week.
If they find more cancer in the breast it will probably be chemo and then a mastectomy. If it’s just that one lump I will have a lumpectomy (lump removal ) and radiotherapy. They’re looking at an operation in August.
I’m feeling very positive and feel so much better now I know for sure and what the plan is

They also said I was oestrogen positive and HER2 borderline

speedyhedgehog · 01/07/2021 07:11

I was thinking of you yesterday but didn't know what to post. Didn't want to post something as if I was expecting you to come and update immediately. I'm glad you have a clearer plan now. X

BG2015 · 01/07/2021 07:19

I actually felt better at this appointment than the first one.

The hardest thing was telling my two boys who are 21 and 18. The youngest (who still lives at home) got very upset but I was very positive and reassured him.

He's been refusing to have a covid vaccine (stubborn teenager syndrome) but he's booked it now so that's a positive out of a shitty situation

JinglingHellsBells · 01/07/2021 07:24

Just sending you good wishes @BG2015. I've been following your posts but didn't have anything useful to say. I hope everything goes well for you Flowers

speedyhedgehog · 01/07/2021 11:06

That must have been awfully difficult. Mine also know nothing since at the moment there is not much to say and I don't want to worry them. Mine are between 18 - 14. Sending lots of positive thoughts to you.

Sewingbeefan · 01/07/2021 20:30

@BG2015 I have just got up to date with your post. Am so sorry it was not the news you wanted but can understand you feeling ‘better’ now you know.
I hope things crack on and you get a firm plan soon. I can only imagine how hard it was telling your boys but you sound amazingly strong.
I remember upthread you have a lovely family and great support- do make sure you lean on them ( and us!) when needed.

Giving you my most positive thoughts and a big hug Flowers

Hello @BG2015 I was diagnosed with grade 2 lobular cancer in March. Also hormone positive and Her negative. It's taken a long time as I had to have two MRI'S. I'm having a mastectomy soon as my second MRI guided biospy with dye found areas of abnormality all over my breast as often is the case with lobular cancer apparently. It's only in one breast luckily. I've had a sentinel lymph node biopsy operation yesterday to see if the cancer is in my lymph nodes as the scans haven't picked it up. If it is in my lymph nodes I will have radiotherapy after the mastectomy. Reconstruction in the future, can be a couple of years though. If it isn't in the lymph nodes I can have an immediate reconstruction the same time as the mastectomy. I have met with the plastic surgeons and it is a lot to take in, but I feel much more positive now there is a plan for me. Don't think I'll need chemo but one thing at a time! Good luck with your treatment, I haven't spoken to anyone else with lobular cancer personally. Mine was a dent in the skin, no lump.
BG2015 · 04/07/2021 05:25

@SS67 thanks for your post.
I've got an an MRI on Wednesday to check for further cancer.

I've 'spoken' to a few women on the Breast Cancer Now website who have lobular cancer.

They have some really great forums over there. It's amazing that 4 weeks ago I was oblivious, living my life and then here I am learning the language of cancer and running out of vases because people keep sending me flowers.

The MRI will determine what happens next- lumpectomy or mastectomy.

Good luck and if you ever want to chat DM me with pleasure
Take care

speedyhedgehog · 06/07/2021 13:05

Just a little update as I had my appointment today. The consultant I saw was lovely but told me we were very likely looking at breast cancer. An hour later after the mammogram and ultrasound things looked a lot brighter. The lump actually looks benign but has been biopsied to make sure. No explanation of the bleeding was visible. So i'm to go back in 6 weeks and if I still have bleeding will need exploratory surgery. Its a lot more positive than i thought it would be but not out of the woods yet.
Hope the MRI goes well for you this week BG2015

Cavalierqueen · 06/07/2021 13:12

This doesn't sound OK, even for the NHS. Presumably brusque woman was not medically trained or in full knowledge of the facts. I saw this in my nurse training in London years ago, this superscillious attitude towards women, sometimes even calling them hysterical. Totally with you and it's likely to be nothing, sometimes it's just a contrast issue, sometimes a cyst. I doubt you would not have been contacted by a nurse specialist if it was really scary, they would be in touch. I had a mammogram before having a reduction in the middle east, totally routine and the doctor told me the worst and said an ambulance was coming and to wait in the corridor. 10 minutes later someone came and said sorry, wrong person, you are fine so don't automatically expect the worst, there are assholes and mistakes. That said, no wonder you are feeling this way and unmumsnetty big hugs. Flowers keep us posted

speedyhedgehog · 14/07/2021 15:08

Been thinking of you BG2015. Hope you're doing ok. Xxx

TheStirrer · 14/07/2021 16:59

Glad I have found this thread as I have been referred after a routine mammogram and am bricking it.
It’s not really helped by the fact you can’t take anyone in with you either.
Fingers crossed it’s nothing but it’s scary and I am feeling very anxious about it

steppingcarefully · 16/07/2021 23:13

I have recently been treated for breast cancer. Diagnosed in Feb, lumpectomy in March then radiotherapy and hormone treatment tablets to take for the next 5 years. I have a couple of follow up appts still to attend. The waiting for results was the worst. Once I knew what we were dealing with I could focus on it and start the process of tackling it head on. There were loads of appts to attend which due to covid had to be done alone although my husband was allowed in for any where I was being given results. There was a lot of information to take in. All the doctors and nurses I saw were amazing, so kind and caring and reassuring. I was under the care of 4 different hospitals due to covid sharing the load and all of them were fantastic. Breast cancer is one of the most successful cancers to treat. I wish you luck in your forthcoming treatment.

Three out of four women who attend the breast clinic do not have cancer. As you can see from my message above if you are the unlucky one you will be treated quickly and efficiently from the kindest of staff. It is tough having to attend by yourself although you can ask for someone to be with you when they give you the results. Good luck.
BG2015 · 16/07/2021 23:20

I had my biopsy results this week.Stage 2 lobular breast cancer triple positive,

I'm having a lumpectomy on the 10th Aug and then chemotherapy and Herceptin injections. I will put have radiotherapy too as well.

It's been a roller coaster few weeks. I only discovered the lump on the 7th June.

Everyone I've met has been amazing

AlexaShutUp · 16/07/2021 23:23

Not the same, OP, but I was investigated for a different type of cancer earlier this year. I was terrified and convinced myself of the worst case scenario. It turned out to be fine in the end. I hope that you will also get a reassuring outcome. Stay positive.Flowers

Good luck with your treatment. It is a roller coaster and you will have many appointments to attend. Thank goodness for the speed and efficiency of the breast clinic though, I cannot praise them enough for the treatment I received.
