Quick advice needed! Mirena fell out.

After horrendous labour like pains on weds night I spoke to the GP who told me that it would be near impossible for my mirena to be expelling after 5 months... shed referred me for emergency Zoladex injections instead.

Well, today it did indeed fall out!

I can't get through to 111 and don't feel it's an A and E type issue but should I be contacting a Dr or someone medical to tell them? Do I need checking out?

I'm very happy it's fallen out. Am convinced it's been trying to expel since it was put in at the same time as having fibroids removed last November.

I'm now wondering if the horrendous pain and bleeding I've had each month since have been linked to the mirena not suiting my body...

How are you feeling now?

I wouldn't be able to resist calling the gp and telling them to buy a lottery ticket, as the near impossible just happened!

As the hormones are localised, I imagine that would mean you'll work out pretty soon if it's causing the symptoms?

Timeforabiscuit · 04/04/2021 19:07

If you're feeling OK, I think its a gp job or serial health if you want alternative birth control.

rosesinmygarden · 04/04/2021 19:16

I have some light cramping and a bit of a back ache but that's it. I danced for joy when it came out...

Grin I bet you did!

The only thing I'd worry about would be a new fibroid causing the pain, I'm a cautious type so I'd be having a paracetamol, keeping an eye on my temperature in case of any infection malarkey kicking things off, and get onto 111 when you can.

My mirena is very well behaved, but have heard they can be an absolute bitch too, and fibroids can go do one - so you have my utmost sympathy!

rosesinmygarden · 04/04/2021 19:43

Well, got through and am waiting on a call back.

Thank you for calming me down Smile

Mine came out last October after being out in in august Hmm

Was bleeding extremely heavily (reason for it being f fitted) and I felt something in my vaginal canal - and there say my coil.

Had another fitted in January.

So far it's still there (despite more severely heavy periods)

If my periods don't stop in a few months I'll be happy for the fucker to come out again and try ablation or hysterectomy.

I didn't have to see anyone when mine came out. I rang GP on the Monday and got telephone appointment (it came out sat - or rather 3am on the Sunday)

AttilaTheMeerkat · 04/04/2021 20:31

This scenario has also occurred in some women who have been eventually diagnosed with endometriosis. Has endometriosis ever been mentioned as a possible cause of your painful periods?. This can also cause heavy bleeding to arise.

I have also heard of zoladex being prescribed for such patients as well.

Do you need emergency contraception?

itsgettingwierd · 04/04/2021 20:41

Atilla I have endo and very likely adenomyosis too - ultrasound showed some very clear pictures.

rosesinmygarden · 05/04/2021 07:43

They've never mentioned endo but I suspect it. Or more fibroids maybe.

To be honest, they just downplay it and I've never had an actual reason given or really been examined properly. Just given treatments which don't work and get more and more unpleasant.

Out of hours GP says I need a scan to check for damage, so I've got the fun of trying to contact the GP while also trying to work full time again next week ... sigh. A scan would be a good thing though as it would show if the fibroids have returned.

No need for emergency contraception. That's the very least of my concerns.

The out of hours GP actually suggested I make an appointment for a new mirena. I'm ashamed to say I laughed out loud down the phone at that point. Never again.

I would try and find someone who does not downplay your symptoms rather than yet offer you another Mirena (BTW my response to that was the same as your own along with a flat no so do not feel ashamed).

An ultrasound scan would likely detect fibroids and polyps but not endometriosis if it is present (and I have had more such scans than I care to mention).

I would also have a look at this website and see if there is such a centre near you www.bsge.org.uk/endometriosis-centres/ and click on the words Endo Centres on the right hand side of this homepage.

rosesinmygarden · 05/04/2021 09:03

Thamks @AttilaTheMeerkat

I'm not ashamed of not wanting another mirena, but I did feel a bit guilty for laughing at the GP's suggestion. To be fair she laughed and agreed with me.

I've just started some aggressive dose norethisterone and I think to be honest I want to give that a chance. The horrendous pains this month were, I think, down to it at least exacerbated by the mirena expelling.

I feel like I need a month of just the norethisterone without the complication of the coil to judge where to go next.

The GP did dismiss the idea of my mirena expelling after nearly 6 months. I know this is because data suggests it's unlikely but all the same, I now have a mirena in my dressing table instead of where it should be!

My mirena expelled after 18 months! Honestly GPs drive me mad if something is low chance they act like it's no chance, rather than considering actual symptoms!

ohidoliketobe · 05/04/2021 09:16

You're lucky you spotted it!

After 2 years of no issues with mine, I went from barely bleeding to a few very heavy periods at the start of lockdown last year. Managed to get a gp call - could be stress see if it settles. Seemed to settle again. Then in September I feel a bit off, 'if I didn't know better I'd say I was pregnant hahaha' I said to DH taking a test to rule it out.

Long story short, I was almost 12 weeks pregnant at that point, now 37 weeks, and consultant is unsure if mirena had been dispelled or had been displaced and has been absorbed by the placenta!

Wow! This makes me even more certain I won't be having another.

I had been concerned it was trying to make its escape since it was put in so I have been regularly checking the strings, but yes I could easily have missed it.

I m tempted to send it to the GP so maybe she believes the next woman in my position! I don't envy their job at all and they have tried to help but I do feel rather dismissed right now.

Mine just fell out when I was on the loo one day. It was my 3rd I think. I'm just the wrong shape for it. Fibroid are hellish, I hope you get sorted.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 05/04/2021 10:58

I took northisterone and I hope it works out for you. Give it a try by all means and for at least one month. It worked for me very well, that is until I ran out of tablets (was not prescribed enough prior to ablation surgery for uncontrollable peri menopause bleeding) and then the bleeding came back with a vengeance.

If this does not work for you then I would contact one of the BSGE centres. Do let us know how you get on.

Escapetothecuntry · 05/04/2021 11:09

Urgh be wary of zoladex, it's horrible.

GillBungalow · 05/04/2021 11:17

Apologies for the TMI, but my Mirena came out after 6 weeks, encased in a massive clot! I retrieved it, washed it, bagged it then took it to the Drs with me and got it out in the appointment.
My GP booked me straight in for an ablation, which was life changing for me.

Are they NHS? I cannot afford more private treatment!

Yes they are NHS.

@AttilaTheMeerkat

Yes they are NHS.
Thank you!

I've just looked and there is one very local to me. I think I need to push for more investigation. So far they've just thrown medications at me.

I think it's too soon to try the Zoladex @Escapetothecuntry. I was desperate wjen I spoke to the GP last week but I'm now thinking the excrutiating pain I had last week was the coil freeing itself. I think I need to give the norethisterone at least one more month. I'm due to be reviewed by the consultant anyway end of May.

If it settled a bit I would be happy. Currently on 15th day of bleeding though Sad

What issues do or did you have with it? I'm currently having it monthly to prep for an ablation.

My Mirena expelled one morning at 5am onto the bathroom floor. It was quite painful, very much like a labour pain. I was so shocked to see it there I wrote it on my phone calendar just in case I thought I dreamt it. I think mine was expelled due to fibroids. I too would not have another one as the whole time it was in it didn't stop my bleeding, or even slow it down.

Escapetothecuntry · 05/04/2021 15:43

I had it during chemo and the hot flushes and menopause symptoms were worse than the actual menopause. I had it to shut down my ovaries to protect them and decided against any more because it was so bad.
