Anybody had cervical ectropion and been ok many years later? So upset after reading online that it can cause cervical cancer.

I had it in 2016. All my smears have been clear since.

User27aw · 29/03/2021 21:17

I had it about 20 years ago, been fine ever since. Where did you hear it as links to cervical cancer, i had never heard of this. I just googled an NHS info leaflet on it and it said there was no links to cancer.

DisappearingGirl · 29/03/2021 21:18

I have been told I have one, on a routine smear. The nurse said it was nothing to worry about, and everything I've read online says it is nothing to worry about!

Emzy12 · 29/03/2021 21:21

Hi the nhs websites say it is not Linked to cervical cancer. I found one website that says cervical cancer is found in cervical erosion and this has upset me. The website however has the date 1966 on it. I had mine treated but it cam back.

Had one that caused bleeding in pregnancy.

Not heard anything about link to cancer so Confused

Forevernamechange12333333 · 29/03/2021 21:23

I had it in pregnancy with ds1, I had missed my first smear due to pregnancy, I had it after him. I had pre cancerous cells removed, the highest level CIN3 on two areas of my cervix.

I’ve never read anywhere that they are related.

claireb7rg · 29/03/2021 21:24

I've had it on and off for 2 years. It does not cause cancer and is not linked to cancer!! It's been proven....

Cervical ectropion
Emzy12 · 29/03/2021 21:26

I just wished i never searched on google. All the nhs are saying cervical ectropion is not linked to cervical cancer but the other old ones are saying it is. X

OP posts:
claireb7rg · 29/03/2021 21:29

The old ones may say it, but science and medicine and research have progressed since 1966. It is now known not to be linked... Forget the one from 1966. All the current research says it's not

Emzy12 · 29/03/2021 21:33

Yes you are right. Doesnt help when i suffer with health anxiety. Have u had yours treated claire? I have but its back. The gynaecologist told me cervical ectropion is not linked to cervical cancer. I wish i cn believe him

I was diagnosed with this about 15 years ago. No issues since and I'm in my mid 40's. The consultant said it can be a symptom of cervical cancer as well as prolonged use of the pill. When I came off the pill all the symptoms disappeared and all smears and check ups afterwards were fine. So if you have cervical cancer, you might have this, but it doesn't cause cervical cancer.

Thedot90 · 29/03/2021 21:37

Why would you believe people on a forum, or research which is 50 years old, over a qualified health professional who has no reason to lie to you? I understand you have health anxiety, I’m genuinely just curious about the thought process? Do you feel you have to google until you find something which is the opposite? Sorry if I sound like I’m being sarcastic, I promise I’m not.

claireb7rg · 29/03/2021 21:44

No as it wasn't bothering me that much at all, I only noticed it when we were ttc and found a lump, panicked and got a gynae referral. They said it was ectropian and nothing to worry about. No idea if the lump has gone or not as no longer ttc

claireb7rg · 29/03/2021 21:45

But yes this... If a gynae has told you it's not linked, why would you not believe them over Google?

I found out i have cervical ectropion 3 years ago. Still today i think about it. My gps the nhs say its normal and not linked to cervical cancer. But i feel i need to research and find out everything i can about it. Now im looking for peoples experiences with cervical ectropion that can help me. Would you look for someone elses positive experience with cervical ectropion or would you believe the gynaecologist and gp and nhs websites that are all saying cervical ectropion is normal.

Not bothered about it at all. I hadn't actually thought about it for 6 - 9 months till I saw this thread.

I get regular smears so if anything was wrong it would be picked up that way but last smear (done as part of the investigation) was clear

claireb7rg · 29/03/2021 21:55

But I am a scientist, and I don't have health anxiety

Yep. Never been any more than a minor nuisance - bleeding after sex and so on.

toomuchlikemyusername · 29/03/2021 22:02

My ectropian was first spotted during a routine smear about 10 years ago. The GP was keen to stress there was no link to cervical cancer and all of the resources I looked at backed this up and I pretty much forgot about it, only remembering it at subsequent smears when it would be commented on again (without any fuss or concern). A couple of years ago I had some slight unexplained bleeding and was referred to a gynaecologist who confirmed it was slightly inflamed and treated it with silver nitrate. No problems since and every smear I have comes back clear.
I know these sorts of things can be worrying OP but try to put your trust in the up to date resources and your GP as well as taking some comfort in the experiences of others on this forum Thanks

Emzy12 · 29/03/2021 22:02

I wish i was like you. But youre a scientist so you know better than me about that website written ages ago saying cervical cancer is found in cervical erosion. Thanks for replying to me. I wish one day i will accept it is normal. I found out i had hpv too with the cervical ectropion so went crazy searching. My smear came bk clear jan 2020 so the hpv went. So now its bk to just the cervical ectropion.

OP posts:
EiffelPower · 29/03/2021 22:03

I've had it for years. Not remotely concerned. Trust you doc.

Are you sure it was that way round not ectropian is found in cervical cancer?? Ectropian can be a symptom of cancer but cancer is not a symptom of ectropian...

If your smear is clear and your gynae says all normal please stop stressing, it won't do you any good xxx

Emzy12 · 29/03/2021 22:16

Thanks claire. I appreciate you replying to me. Claire when you say cervical ectropion can be a symptom of cervical cancer, what do you mean?
