Uterine polyp

Rockinghorse2019 · 20/02/2021 11:31

I posted on a thread below but no one has posted. They think they have found a polyp in my uterus from a untrasound scan.
The doctor said I am potentially looking at a D and c and a hysteroscopy very anxious . Think it would involve GA . Do polyps grow back ? Any body had this?

Hi, I’m booked in for hysteroscopy under GA in 10 days time. I can let you know how it goes. Nervous about GA as never had it before, consultant said they worry about bowel polyps more than uterine but always advise to get them removed and checked

wowseroonie · 20/02/2021 16:03

I’m also awaiting the same procedure for a uterine polyp.
I’ve been assured that lots of people have the procedure without GA as it can be totally fine. I was given the choice but opted for the sedation as a personal preference. The fact that there’s an option made me feel much better and convinced it really can’t be that bad if people all the time are having it with no pain relief.

Hope that helps and best of luck with it

Ifyourefeelingsinister · 20/02/2021 16:10

I have had this op. I had it under GA, it was all fine, day surgery, felt fine afterwards. I wasn't given the option not to have a GA - not sure why. I got results a few weeks later, but the surgeon spoke to me afterwards and said they didn't think it looked sinister. I remember being quite worried about it at the time, but from talking to my GP and searches online suggested it was unlikely to be cancerous (esp because of my age at the time, pre menopause), but they still like to check them out in any case. Best of luck.

barbrahunter · 20/02/2021 16:11

I had a uterine polyp removed last Summer. I know everyone has different pain thresholds but the procedure barely hurt. Actually the surgeon was just going to look on the first occasion, and then bring me back to have it removed, possibly under GA. But because the initial investigation wasn't too bad at all, we agreed to 'do it here and now'. It took a few minutes and I was good to go. I have had worse period pains. Good luck.

barbrahunter · 20/02/2021 16:12

And I should add, it was benign.

gettingalife · 21/02/2021 08:49

I had a hysteroscopy, under GA, to remove a uterine polyp just over 2 weeks ago. I was really anxious about it but it was fine. The GA recovery was the worst bit for me - knocked me sideways for 3 days (sleepy and nauseous) but I just rested and watched telly. Took 10 days to feel like me again, which I wasn't prepared for. The bleeding was fine afterwards but I was really tender for a week (probably due to having a Mirena Coil put in during the procedure). Some period type pain that I've still got but I took the painkillers given to me and they helped. I got the results by post exactly 2 weeks afterwards and it was benign. My advice is to make sure you rest afterwards and be prepared for a fair few days of grogginess. I was given a 2 week sick note, which I didn't think I'd need, but I really did! Good luck.

Rockinghorse2019 · 21/02/2021 16:03

Thank you everyone for your replies. It is more of a procedure than I thought (very nervous) . Has anyone had the d and c part?
I had a cyst removed about 4 years ago but just while I was awake during hysteroscopy (for infertility) but seemed ok - I even went to Starbucks after ! But this time seems a lot more under GA and worried as it seems to have come back.

I'm having a hysteroscopy on tuesday. GA was not offered yikes! Mine is for a thickening of the lining of the uterus. Only marginal but I'm still anxious. Have looked up the name of the consultant and she's gynaecologist and oncology :(
Maybe that's standard.

Ifyourefeelingsinister · 21/02/2021 16:23

Rocking horse, I had this op twice - don't know if it was in the same place but I had another polyp. It seems some people are a bit more prone to them than others. As a procedure it really wasn't that bad, honestly. Best of luck.

longtompot · 21/02/2021 16:23

I had a hysterscopy last year to have a look at the fibroids I have and they have discovered another polyp. I had several polyps removed under ga about 7 years ago, and they do grow back. I am due to have another hysterscopy sometime this year to have an ablation and polyp removal along with another biopsy as the one I had last time didn't have enough cells. Annoying to say the least as it was a bit taking breath away when they did it. I would much rather all this was done with me knocked out, but I have to say, as one of the biggest wusses in the world, it didn't hurt as such. It was uncomfortable, there were some moments it felt too much (the biopsy). That said, I have no idea what having the ablation and polyp removal will be like with just having local.

Beaniecats · 21/02/2021 16:26

Oh I had this had it removed via d & c hysteroscopy. Done under general anaesthetic as day case
It was analyzed by histology as is standard I think but totally benign

gettingalife · 21/02/2021 17:01

Mine included a D&C along with the rest I mentioned.

Veuvestar · 21/02/2021 17:23

I had one removed a couple of weeks ago.
2cm removed, was in and out in half an hour. Drove home. I really didn’t realise that it was a big deal.

I had the biopsy one week then an appt 2 weeks later to get it removed. There wasn’t that much difference in the 2 procedures. No anaesthetic. I only found out during the procedure that it’s usually done under GA.
The way they described the procedure was a bit like Pac-Man -taking tiny bites out of it, sometimes it’s soft and easy, sometimes a bit more fibrous.
I had one cramping feeling at the same time each procedure, lasted about 3 seconds.

I honestly wouldn’t go under for that, it was not much more uncomfortable than a smear test

Beaniecats · 21/02/2021 17:35

I was told afterward cervix was tightly closed and having it done awake wouldn't have been pleasant. I'm not embarrassed I had a GA

Veuvestar · 21/02/2021 18:10

Oh God, don’t be embarrassed! I wasn’t thinking that. I’m so sorry
I think, like Barbra above, they know from investigations or biopsy if it’s going to be straightforward or not and advise GA .

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 21/02/2021 18:21

I had two hysteroscopies. The first one I was conscious and they removed a polyp and it was "intense".

I had a second one a fortnight later under GA and I felt nothing at all afterwards other than nausea and sleepiness for a couple of days. There was some bleeding and very mild cramps.

And the polyps were all benign.

When you say intense, can you elaborate?
MissyB1 · 21/02/2021 21:55

I had a failed hysteroscopy whilst awake (using gas and air) but the dr couldn’t get through the cervix. Then had the procedure done under GA and a polyp removed. That was last August, unfortunately a few days ago I started bleeding again so my GP is referring me back to Gynae. She think It’s probably another polyp sigh.....

Boiledeggandtoast · 21/02/2021 22:08

I had a polyp removed under GA 8 years ago. It was day surgery so I had the operation in the morning and was home in the afternoon. It sorted out my torrential bleeding and made my periods much more manageable. I had a week off work and no further problems. I'm now through the menopause and it's marvellous not to have periods! Good luck OP and I hope it helps with your problems.

Veuvestar · 21/02/2021 22:33

Mine was 2.5 weeks ago and today I’ve had the heaviest period in 40years
I don’t actually know how I’m going to get any sleep tonight.

TiddleTaddleTat · 26/02/2021 10:59

I've just had a polyp discovered following a smear test. Several GPs came to have a look today and say it's growing in the uterus and out of the cervix. Being referred to gynaecology, never had this before. Is it essential to have it removed?

oneglassandpuzzled · 26/02/2021 11:07

I’ve had three lots of polyps.

The last two sets were removed during hysteroscopy without general anaesthetic. I take cocodamal and do breathing exercises.

It isn’t my favourite day out but the discomfort is usually five seconds of bad cramping as the probe goes through the cervix.

I have had a vaginal delivery, which might make it easier.

I am waiting to see whether I have atypical hyperplasia and will need a hysterectomy as it could become cancerous. I think they’re swaying towards the less serious form of hyperplasia.

oneglassandpuzzled · 26/02/2021 11:08

If you’re post-meno they will want to remove polyps.

Rockinghorse2019 · 26/02/2021 12:03

I am going to see the gynaecologist next week. My lining is always thick which is a concern too. I’m taking northisterone at the end of my cycle as I don’t seem to have much progesterone.
I think they want to remove most polyps.

Thanks @Rockinghorse2019 and @oneglassandpuzzled I'm mid 30s so well before menopause. They said I could make up my mind about the gynae referral and removal but I said to go ahead.
