Experiences of fibroids

Ok, trying to distract myself given two urgent referrals haven't materialised into anything.

What were your symptoms do fibroids? Did anyone bleed for heavily months?

hopeishere · 17/09/2020 13:54

Not for months but definitely much heavier periods. Clots and flooding.

Chocomel · 17/09/2020 14:47

Currently in the waiting room waiting to see what my consultant says..... but fibroids. Yes. Have been bleeding nonstop since 18/8. Cloys as big as the palm of my hand. Biggest 'inconvenience' (other than the obvious) at the moment seems to be feeling faint. (Low iron). If there's anything interesting to report after, I'll come back. X

Someonesayroadtrip · 17/09/2020 14:57

Thanks, that's helpful. I've bled since July 3rd, but before that I was having bleeding for 2 weeks and then 2 weeks off and then again for 2 weeks.

Passing clots the same so that's reassuring.i had never seen anything like that, so it's really nice to not feel alone. It was like passing an organ .
Hope your appointment goes well.

Thanks! They're running late so I'm still surfing in the waiting room, but I'm just grateful I'm going to be seen. I've had 6 weeks of terrible bleeding. Soaking super tampons in 10 mins, and I just want it to stop. (Prior to this I had two week long periods as well but just assumed it was because I was unlucky/overweight). I've been taking Exacyl for a week to help halt the flow (it hasn't) so I had my scan yesterday and the GP sent me to see someone at the hospital today. Scan showed various things which all on their own contribute to bleeding, including fibroids. Just waiting to see how to sort this out. Good luck to you too - you're definitely not alone.

Someonesayroadtrip · 17/09/2020 15:22

I was referred for a scan on aug 3rd but the hospital cancelled and said I wasn't urgent and I've had different medications to try and stop it and it's lighter but I'm still bleeding.

I was soaking through a super tampon and pad in 20 minutes, I felt and still do so ill. I was passing lots of clothes like golf balls but one morning I felt something and it was like you say the palm of my hand and fingers long and as wide as my palm and as thick as a finger.

The bleeding or more normal period now but with gushes of blood and clots which soak through everything I was referred via the urgent pathway 2 weeks ago Monday gone and not heard back yet.

I've always been really heavy but this is much worse and I am bleeding in between my periods.

Really hope you get some answers today. I know how frightening it all is.

I have fibroids. Got a consultant appointment on Monday to see what action they can take.
I've not felt ill or had any symptoms other than 1 say per period where blood seems to pour out of me but no clots. I am 49 though.
Last time I saw the consultant she was talking about hysterectomy Sad

It's horrible isn't it? Good luck at your appointment.

I'm love it if they offered me a hysterectomy, I am 37 and realise the risks/complications but equally my periods have always been horrendous but now it's just so difficult. My kids are terrified seeing blood pour from me but it comes out of the blue.

So sorry you are going through this too.

I've been bleeding since 1st June!

Periods like that before hand too.

And the flooding is terrible.

Having ultrasound in a few weeks.

Had mirena fitted last month but that takes 3-6 months to see if it's worked or not.

itsgettingweird · 17/09/2020 21:24

Oh and yes the clots. I said to the gp it's like someone has ripped a hartleys jelly from the pot into the loo!

allfalldown47 · 17/09/2020 21:35

Awful heavy periods, clots etc
I eventually could feel my fibroid, particularly when I laid on my back, it was huge Confused

Penny31 · 17/09/2020 21:40

Just had one removed under local anaesthetic. Did not hurt one bit and haven’t bled yet. It’s been 2 weeks.

Symptoms were really heavy periods every other week. Ultrasound suggest polyps but when the gynaecologist was examining during the hystoscopy he said it was a large fibroid, showed me on the screen and removed it there and then.

chatterbugmegastar · 17/09/2020 21:44

Super heavy. Bled for weeks and weeks on end. Bleeding and clots expelled the mirena which was put in to stop the bleeding. Became horribly anemic

Someonesayroadtrip · 17/09/2020 21:56

Thank you all! Sounds all very similar. I assumed you wouldn't continue to bleed for weeks but clearly lots of you have experienced that so that reassuring. Thanks

My consultant was two hours late..... she whizzed through the appt. I've to stop taking the drug Exacyl and she's put me on the pill, one that's supposed to stop periods altogether (can't remember name) . I'm booked in for a D&C on Wednesday to sort fibroids and they're just going to monitor the cyst to see if it goes away. Just to add - I'm in France, so I realise how lucky I am with the speed of the treatments. I don't think it reflects any urgency or something to be worried about healthwise, it's just that things seem to move much quicker over here. Hoping you're closer to a solution soon OP. X

Glad things are getting sorted quickly for you OP. Good luck with the D&C. I had one after a miscarriage and it seemed to help me a lot .

@Someonesayroadtrip - thank you. May I ask - how long did you take to recover? Is it a back to work the next day type of thing? I start a new job on Monday.....

Chocomel · 17/09/2020 22:50

Posted without thinking. I'm sorry. In my selfish haste, I didn't think to add how sorry I am that you had to go through that. It must have been absolutely horrid for you. Thank you for the reassuring words. Hopefully it will help. X

It was ages ago. I had a general anaesthetic but was ok, I had a sore throat form that but that was because of the way they had to anaesthetise me as I was really sick with morning sickness.

I was fine though. The anaesthetic was the thing that took the longest to get over. I was physically fine go do most things. I got pregnant really soon after that with twins.

Still waiting. I contacted my GP who tried to tell me to not worry and could be lots of things. She said I was accepted on the urgent list but it's just not going to be within the 2 weeks, which it's already passed so I knew that.

She said she referred me again for a scan but that the urgent scans are taking 8 weeks, so don't expect to get that this month (which is annoying as my original referral was August 3rd.

She said my cancer fact wasn't raised which I thought it was, so that's good to know and that there was nothing seen in my cervix so again that's good, just a waiting game.

She's prescribed something for the pain (I started in pain after I was examined and felt something in my side) and bleeding, and iron, so I have to pick that up Monday.

I have fibroids and have had 2 myomectomies and they’ve kept coming back! It’s worth asking you GP for tranexamic acid which I have found brilliant for heavy periods. Good luck.

Someonesayroadtrip · 19/09/2020 20:28

Thanks, I've been on that since August 3rd. Sorry you have had such a hard time too.

OP posts:
chasegirl · 21/09/2020 17:38

Saw my consultant today don't have to have hysterectomy. Having an injection or implant to stop periods temporarily so fibroid shrinks then will have it removed under a general anesthetic (covid dependant).

Someonesayroadtrip · 21/09/2020 20:53

That's great news. Hope it all goes smoothly for you.

Post Op update -
Yesterday I had my D&C which removed the fibroids inside my uterus (but not the cysts outside). It was totally easy. Pain relief is paracetamol. Home 8 hours after the GA. I feel week enough to go to work, but the Dr signed me off for today as well. It's the first morning in weeks where I haven't bled into the toilet, and the best sleep in weeks because I haven't had to get up in the night to change sanitary products/pajamas. I also had a iron infusion due to anemia (because of blood loss over the weeks) and it's the first morning in months where I've woken up and not felt 'hungover' (I don't drink!). Getting 'scraped out' looks to have made a big change on my quality of life. Hopefully it'll stay this way for a while now. But I know that if it happens again, I won't put off going to the dr like I did this time (I just assumed it was because I am fat and getting older). Hoping everyone else in this situation has successful treatments as well. X

Chocomel · 24/09/2020 06:57

Oops. Tired typo. I feel well enough to go to work today. (But obviously can't proof read...)
