Mirena, thrush and all the other crazy symptoms

Hello all.
Really thought it could be helpful to share my experience after stalking (not in a creepy way) the group/threads for some time but never posting.
I had the coil for approximately 3 years, had it removed 2 months ago and am truly surprised how much better I feel. I suffered this thrush for the last 2 years of having the Mirena fitted, at least once a month sometimes twice. The doctor always said the coil wasn’t to blame, 2 months of it out and haven’t had it once. I don’t think this is a coincidence. I some how developed anxiety with the coil which I have never suffered with. Ever! since it’s been removed this has reduced massively. Not one panic attack, tight feeling in throat or feeling like I can’t breath. The constant aching boobs have subsided apart from just before my period. I swear I use to be able to feel it if I sat in certain positions. Pain after sex. I can’t quite believe the toll the Mirena was taking on my body. Anyone had a similar experience?

Hi @Aligeorge, we're just bumping your thread in case any Mumsnetters are around with some advice and support. Flowers

No, but I had huge hair loss. Mirena taken out and my hair is growing back now.

RhapsodyandAshe · 30/06/2020 22:40

I didn't have a Mirena, I had a copper coil. Went for a scan of my ovaries and it had slipped. It had been sitting at the top of my cervix for God knows how long, being of little use to man or beast.
I had to have it removed and not sure I would ever give it another go

Had mine in for 8 months. I don't like it. I like that my periods have reduced in flow, but I don't like the thrush, constant rock hard painful boobs and cramping. I also appear to have developed hormonal headaches and PMT, which may be coincidence or imagination, but I haven't had those in 20 years (since I was on the pill). I'm also sure I smell weird down there, which is grim and irritating.

Roll on the hysterectomy!!

RandomMess · 30/06/2020 22:42

Ha I suffered itching that drove me insane, wasn't thrush it was threads just irritating everything.

Yep I felt loads better after I got rid of it. Bleed for 6 months on it and still had monthly break through bleeds...

Altogether a disappointing disaster for me!

I loved it. Spent 12 years with 3 successive coils. No periods, no contraception needed, no side effects. Even the changeover every 5 years was hassle free.

bananaramama · 01/07/2020 20:19

I had the copper coil and suffered recurrent thrush which was just horrific. My GP admitted it could be caused by the coil. I'm surprised it is never listed as a common side effect of having a coil fitted.
Haven't had thrush again since it was removed - and that was about 6 years ago!

Aligeorge · 01/07/2020 21:45

The thrush was the worst part of it all. I actually had mine taken out during a colposcopy for something else and when it was removed the colposcopy nurse said the strings where coated and there was no wonder I was suffering with it. I just wish I had got it out sooner instead of suffering for years with it.
Ulrikaka - I don’t believe it is your imagination, it really does feel like you’re going crazy.
