Dry sockets tooth extraction

Sitdowncupoftea · 28/10/2019 22:05

I had my tooth extracted on friday it was a wisdom tooth. I was in so much pain over the weekend. The worst pain I've experienced! I've been told I have a dry socket. I went to dentist it was filled with a dressing pain came back. I got another dressing still in pain. I also got antibiotics as its infected. I was wondering if anyone else had them and how did they cope. I've been told it will take a week to heal. Painkillers not working. Dentist wont prescribe painkillers. I've been told to take paracetamol or codeine and gargle with salt water. How can I cope for a week with constant pain.

Get some clove oil - tastes foul but numbs the pain and ask the pharmacy if they can give you something stronger for the pain?

poppym12 · 28/10/2019 22:12

I really feel for you. I had a dry socket a few years ago over the Christmas period and the pain really is horrific.

I remember taking ibuprofen and cocodamol and using a heat pack then an ice pack on my face. I may also have drunk a lot of brandy Blush it was Christmas

I hope your pain eases soon.

Moneyplants · 28/10/2019 22:14

This is one of the worst pains I hear. I would go to a pharmacy for some cocodamol or solpadeine ask the chemist for one suitable for a bad toothache and you can buy orajel which is an anaesthetic gel containing lidocaine which I think would be better than clove oil as that stings if you get it on your gum.

TheMarschallin · 28/10/2019 22:22

Get another dressing put on. They need to repack it with the vile clove stuff.

And codeine.

It will pass. You have my sympathies!

FlibbertyGiblets · 28/10/2019 22:26

Your GP can prescribe strong painkillers. Give them a buzz in the morning. Btdt. Hope you get some sleep tonight, dry socket is dreadful, my sympathies.

nugget36 · 28/10/2019 22:29

I really feel for you! I had this a couple of weeks ago a dentist took a wisdom tooth out while it had a infection which infected my whole mouth followed by dry socket. I ended up in hospital on a antibiotic drip
It honestly is the worst pain I've ever felt and i wouldn't wish it upon anyone! I made a thread and got lots of helpful advice
Codeine and paracetamol helped me! Strangely the one thing that really helped me was holding ice cold water in my mouth
I hope it passes for you soon but do try to get back to the dentist as soon as possible Sad

Sitdowncupoftea · 29/10/2019 16:44

I've gone back to dentist had it repacked for the third time. I'm on antibiotics as its infected plus part of my jawbone is sticking out in the gum which is also infected. I've told three different dentists I'm in agony they wont prescribe anything Angry. I've took codeine and paracetamol but still in pain. How long after packing does a dry socket take to heal ? The bone sticking out my jaw is like having a piece of glass sticking out all I've been told is the gum will grow back over.
Fed up with the NHS the pain is terrible it's been 4 days now. I've been told not to go to A&E as they cant help. Not to use Clove oil as it burns and hinders the healing process.

I had this and on the 6th day of antibiotics the pain just went away. It's absolutely awful pain. I have the strongest cocodamol on prescription and it was barely taking the edge off. It will get better soon even though it doesn't seem like it!

FlibbertyGiblets · 29/10/2019 17:28

Dentists don't prescribe painkillers. Ring your GP surgery and explain dry socket/exquisite pain, your GP should consider prescribing.

Sitdowncupoftea · 29/10/2019 18:08

My dentist prescribes painkillers however he prescribes ibuprofen which I cant take or cocodamol. I've been on codeine 60mg which doesn't even hit it. Confused. I don't think there is anything stronger ?

Moneyplants · 29/10/2019 20:29

That is bad but hopefully the antibiotic will start to work soon. Add paracetamol to your codeine as even though it doesn't do much on its own it helps the effect of the codeine (the two together are in cocodamol but you can just take paracetamol alongside your codeine if you already have 60mg tablets of it which I think is the strongest).

Chupchup · 29/10/2019 20:38

I've had it twice. I'm sure it's 5-7 days from extraction. You're nearly there. I had mine packed every other day. But the packing gave me such relief. I don't care if clove oil might burn, it was a lifesaver. Also a cold compress will temporarily numb the area. I went to gp and was prescribed really strong painkillers.

I will never have an extraction on a Friday now as it leaves you without support all weekend.

Moneyplants · 29/10/2019 20:45

I do think it's worth going back to the GP tomorrow if there is no improvement in the pain and see if there is any more they can do.

Sitdowncupoftea · 29/10/2019 21:45

Yes I have now learned never to have a tooth extraction on a friday ever again ! I'm dreading going to bed tonight. Ironically I do not smoke , I followed instructions and got dry socket within a day. I'm wishing it goes soon. How on earth does it heal with all the packing stuffed in though ?

TheMarschallin · 29/10/2019 22:07

The packing stuff dissolves I think.
Anyway, it’s the best thing for it

Sitdowncupoftea · 29/10/2019 23:08

How does the socket manage to close if its packed our with dressings though?

OP posts:
Chupchup · 30/10/2019 07:15

I guess it's just doing it's own healing underneath. You can top up the packing with clove oil.

Sitdowncupoftea · 30/10/2019 10:36

I was diagnosed with dry socket 3 days ago on sunday yet pain is getting worse. Tried to get appointment with GP cant even get an emergency appointment. I feel weak , dizzy and in total pain. Should it not be getting better ? It's been packed three times now. I'm 3 days into antibiotics now. Painkillers not working.

Chupchup · 30/10/2019 11:01

I didn't have an infection so can't say. I don't think the pain gets incrementally better, but once the exposed nerves in the socket are covered over the pain will stop. Can you contact 111 for advice and hopefully an appointment? Do you have a walk in centre. Can you go back to the dentists today? They can check if the antibiotics are working. But for me it was a week of hell both times Flowers

poppet31 · 30/10/2019 11:35

I remember having this a few years ago. It is honestly the worst pain I experienced. Mine did get better after about a week but I remember guzzling serious amounts of ibuprofen to just get me through the day (way over the recommended dosage per the packet.)

Fuckenstein · 30/10/2019 11:40

I have so much sympathy for you OP, dry socket is the worst pain I have ever experienced and I have been through 3 labour's and double jaw surgery.

I wanted to gouge my own face off with a spoon. For me the pain went away immediately when they applied the packing. Can you see another dentist in your practice?

Codiene and paracetamol helped and orajel extra strength.

I hope you get sorted today.

Fuckenstein · 30/10/2019 11:41

Try putting wet cotton wool ball into the gap to stop the air getting to the exposed nerve, just until you can get back into the dentist.

Chupchup · 30/10/2019 12:04

I agree that the packing should be providing relief.

Sitdowncupoftea · 30/10/2019 20:07

I went to hospital. I saw a great doctor he prescribed extra strong painkillers and has said infection is getting better. He told me it could take up to two weeks to heal. My jawbone is down to bad dentistry and unfortunately I will have to wait until its healed which is a couple of weeks. I'm annoyed and will never phone 111 again. They told me not to go to hospital when if I actually did go 4 days ago I would have got help. Ironically I told 111 temperature was low on more than one occasion and was told today it was dangerous!!! that was due to a nasty infection. I've been told to go back to hospital if I get worse.

That's great glad you got some help.
