For those who have/have had the Mirena coil, how did you get on with it?

I understand everyone reacts differently to different forms of contraception but Im looking for a general idea of what having one is like

I'm due to get one fitted next month after having my first DC

Spent 2-3 weeks thinking I'd made a massive mistake, and that I would get it removed asap (doctor had told me to give it 4-6 weeks to bed in). Literally went to bed uncomfortable, woke up fine. After that, never had an issue... Have a day's light bleeding every 1-2 months, and LOVE it. Will be getting another one as soon as this one runs out.

ButiLoveHim32 · 10/06/2019 18:57

I'm 4 weeks in and just spent last night in tears saying this is the biggest mistake I ever made. Have always resisted having one but eventually gave in. It's not for contraception but due to the horrifically heavy periods I was having. I was fine for about a week after. Then awful pelvic pain and have been bleeding heavily ever since. This bleeding is most the same as what I was having before I got it in. Have to have a general to get it in or out so I know I will have a fight on my hands to get it out. Have also put on 5lb and my skin is shit.

@ButiLoveHim32 Jesus SadShock

I really don't know what to do. I don't want the implant and I'm shit at remembering to take the pill plus it made me feel fucking awful last time. No libido, terrible moods and weight gain.

Argghh

I love mine. I had the plain ol’ copper coil before hand and my periods were horrific, like a massacre every month! Swapped to the Mirena and they are barely there, sometimes I don’t need to use any sanitary products at all. I can’t take the pill as I suffer with moraines but the hormone dose in the coil is minute so it’s fine.

Nottheduchess · 10/06/2019 19:08

*migraines

alfie22 · 10/06/2019 19:09

On one hand I want to give it a try but the other half is apprehensive as it seems a rigmarole getting it removed..

I'm on my 3rd. The last time I had it changed was painless.

I've had no real periods for 12 years. And no pregnancies either. Genius.

OddBoots · 10/06/2019 19:28

It was annoying and painful cramping for the first few days and constant heavy bleeding for the first few weeks but it's been nearly a year now and after those first few weeks I only have light spotting for a day every 4-6 weeks and no pain.

alfie22 · 10/06/2019 19:31

Perhaps I'll give it a try and see how I go..

I had the copper one previously and had awful, heavy periods and cramps. I used to go through a whole box of tampons and pads in a month! I really wanted to try mirena but was worried about the hormone levels so got Jayden’s instead. It’s just mirena lite (I.e only lasts three years and has a smaller dose of hormones). The reviews and clinical trials said it would lighten periods but only something like 10% of women would go on to have no period. Turns out I’m one of the 10% and I love it! I get some cramping and spotting one day a month - it’s an absolute dream. And it’s smaller so I didn’t really feel them putting it in. I would recommend Jaydess if you’re worried about hormones - honestly I love it.

AppleTree0915 · 10/06/2019 19:34

Sorry autocorrect - it’s called Jaydess

pomegranatepie · 10/06/2019 19:37

I have just had mine removed. I hated it. Full on pregnancy symptoms every few weeks, morning stickiness, excruciating sore boobs, itching all over, on the verge of tears constantly, night sweats... I didn't have periods just constant PMT. I have always reacted badly to hormonal contraception though, so of you are ok with the pill it might be fine for you.

scaredofthecity · 10/06/2019 19:37

Another vote for the jaydess!
It's not perfect but it's definately the best contraception I've tried.

pomegranatepie · 10/06/2019 19:38

Morning sickness

MozzchopsThirty · 10/06/2019 19:40

Love mine
I've had 2 since my last baby in 2009
This one is due out soon and I'll be getting another, plus I get it done under GA Smile

alfie22 · 10/06/2019 19:42

@pomegranatepie No way I could cope with pregnancy symptoms all over again.. also hated the pill! I tried a few different ones too

OP posts:
alfie22 · 10/06/2019 19:42

@MozzchopsThirty does it hurt having it put in then?

Exactly like this for me

alfie22 · 10/06/2019 19:43

My GP didn't even mention Jaydess. I'm beginning to have second thoughts about this

Many, many threads on this. This one last week.

alfie22 · 10/06/2019 19:45

Oooh thanks @Hortz! I missed that one so I'll have a good read before making my decision

pomegranatepie · 10/06/2019 19:47

I gave it a few months before I took it out, but for me it started to get worse not better. Having it taken out was a doddle, drop in sexual health clinic, painless and in and out in half an hour. The copper coil worked well for me in the past, slightly heavier and more painful periods, but compared to the mirena was amazing. Getting one put in in a couple of weeks.

AppleTree0915 · 10/06/2019 19:51

They might need to order Jaydess in for you but it is available. I had it put in at a family planning clinic rather than the GP because they had it at the time, but GP said they could order it in. It’s relatively new so not all know about it.

alfie22 · 10/06/2019 19:52

So general consensus is that people prefer jaydess over Mirena?
