Hysterectomy.

Hurrah and Hallelujah. My uterus has been given an eviction notice!

30 years of being a complete bitch. Let me down twice (miscarriage and ectopic). Did what it should do twice (2 grown up DDs). Never officially diagnosed with anything but suggestions have been PCOS and endometriosis. 30 solid years of hideous periods. 30 years of being fobbed off by assorted GPs who told me it was normal to faint, vomit, incapacitate and take over my life for one out of every three or four weeks.
It’s got to the point where my cycles are just 18-20 days long, I bleed huge amounts for 5 days (emptying cup every 2 hours), overflowing, clots. Light bleeding on and off for a further 4 days. Bleeding on and off randomly mid-cycle. Puking and dizzy. Period diarrhoea, excruciating, labour style pain. Another 3 days of pain while i ovulate plus bleeding then too.
Tried everything. Mirena - I bled for 8 months then it fell out. Painfully. Pill - unhinged. Drugs - I’m allergic to the good ones and the others don’t work so well. Herbs, flowers, tea, homeopathy, diet - all bollox.

Finally saw a Dr who actually listened and agreed to whip the bugger out. Not sure how yet as apparently it's ‘bulky’ (like the rest of me) so need a scan to see how big it is. Also waiting on smear results and endometrial biopsy (which hurt like a bastard and is still hurting 4 days later).

I HATE the consultant. She refused point blank for a hysterectomy - said if I had cancer she would whip it out, but just for what I have, then no. My BMI is too high and there would be a risk of heavy bleeding. I am so disappointed, I have lost a stone so far and feel fed up.

She's going to put me on gonadotrophin therapy for 6 months - an injection of Zolodex every 4 weeks to induce a chemical menopause as I said I was scared of having another period - I just know when I have one it's going to be a tsunami that's going to set me back in terms of the anaemia and general wellbeing.

Has anyone had Zolodex?

ScreamingValenta · 26/11/2018 16:24

No, I wasn't offered Zolodex. That must be so frustrating! Will she reconsider if you get your BMI down? Mine was about 29 when I had the op and I was told I made a good recovery, so I don't think being overweight was too much of an issue. The problem is it's hard to do much exercise if you're in a lot of pain and bleeding heavily. Well done on losing a stone!

Beanfield · 26/11/2018 21:24

That’s crap Jappy.

My BMI is 30. 2 stone down since July. Is it too late to lose a bit more?

I had a similar experience as you. Kept my ovaries and the next year terrible reaccuring cysts.Taking my ovaries out was complicated by scar tissue from the hysterectomy. Ended up with two oophorectomies. Do it all at once!

ScreamingValenta · 27/11/2018 07:24

Beanfield You'll almost certainly lose some weight when you have the operation - your appetite takes a while to get back to normal and you'll probably only want very light meals at first.

Beanfield · 27/11/2018 16:44

Today I was smugly celebrating never ever ever having to have another period ever again.

Guess what happened a few hours later?

OP posts:
ScreamingValenta · 27/11/2018 16:50

Oh, no Sad. But soon it will be completely impossible for that to happen again. It will be a weight off your shoulders - no more planning your life around your periods, no more having to carry san-pro everywhere, just in case. I was still finding little 'just in case' caches of san-pro in old handbags and suitcases a year after my op!

Beanfield · 27/11/2018 17:07

It actually hates me. But I will have the last laugh when it gets thrown in the bin. Bastard.

Hey @Beanfield, I had a hysterectomy 8 months ago which also involved removing my cervix, fallopian tubes and ovaries. The surgeon was able to do it laparoscopically.

I started HRT on day 3. I did need a lot of pain relief but it was more for the retained gas from the surgical procedure than anything else.

Not having periods and being able to have white sheets is still weird Grin

I had a stockpile of unopened packs of sanitary pads and tampons which I gave to the local Red Box Project.

Staringcoat · 27/11/2018 17:18

I am about to have full hysterectomy and bowel surgery for similar issues. So anxious that I dare only read this thread bit by bit so place -marking! Very useful to hear from people who have gone through it though. Hope it all goes well for you op Flowers

AutumnCrow · 27/11/2018 17:23

I certainly have no regrets about having the surgery.

My life was just one long bloodbath beforehand. I felt trapped in the house some days weeks

FannyBurney · 28/11/2018 19:26

Autumn thanks, I can't wait for the bloodbath to be over.

Thinking of you, Bean.

Beanfield · 29/11/2018 06:58

Ts done. Hallelujah!
Feeling stoned but fine. Bit sore but nothing too bad.
Bloody marvelous

I had mine 3 years ago. The best advice I can give is, do not rush your recovery. I had 3 sections before and it is nothing like it. It takes weeks to recover.

I had mine due to severe adhesions, they had to peel my bladder off my womb. I was catheterised for 2 weeks to allow my bladder healing time.

I went straight on hrt, so make sure you have this in place if you want it.

The pmt "rage" has gone, I'm not so weepy, zero periods and odd discharges, no smears as my cervix was removed, womb and cervical cancer is ruled out because they've gone.

I'm so glad I had it done, long term, the only negative is that it affected my libido.

ScreamingValenta · 29/11/2018 07:23

Glad it went well! Now you have a period of rest and recuperation to enjoy.

Staringcoat · 29/11/2018 07:26

Wishing g you a speedy recovery Bean Flowers 🍇

AutumnCrow · 29/11/2018 09:51

Well done Bean Flowers

Ask for pain relief if you need it.

Beanfield · 29/11/2018 10:13

I feel fabulous.

Oh fabulous Bean! Congratulations!

TatterdemalionAspie · 29/11/2018 11:36

@Jappydooda I was on Zoladex for six months and it was utterly hideous - instant chemical menopause with all of the symptoms which go with that. Unless the Zoladex is necessary to have the hysterectomy, I would get a second opinion if I were you.

TatterdemalionAspie · 29/11/2018 11:37

Congratulations on your hysterectomy, Bean.

Appin · 29/11/2018 23:47

Have been following this thread for a while, hesitant to post as I'm finding it very difficult to accept I belong in the hysterectomy club. My uterus has never done a bad day's work in its life, and until two months ago I'd no more imagined having a hysterectomy than going to the moon.

Nevertheless, here I am, diagnosed with cervical cancer and facing hysterectomy on the 8th of January (possibly before if someone else cancels). I'm 36.

I saw my uterus on the screen at a scan last month, and it looked just like it always did on ante-natal scans. And next month it will be gone. I think this procedure will be emotionally quite difficult for me.

In the meantime, trying to look ahead to positives, and reading this thread and the one from last year has really helped get my head round the procedure. I'd be really grateful for any advice on what I can do to prepare- I've got a month until surgery.

Staringcoat · 30/11/2018 00:00

That sounds really hard for you Appin Flowers. No advice as haven't had my op yet, but I realky hope things work out well for you Flowers
