Ooo, if we're talking first world war weepies then definitely All Quiet on the Western Front. I read it when I was about 16 and cried and cried and cried. I can still remember the ending, and I've not read it since (and I'm way the wrong side of 30 now).

Elasticwoman · 17/05/2010 13:10

Older than 30 is the right side, if you ask me.

pollywollydoodle · 17/05/2010 21:06

the spare room by helen garner
an angel at my table by janet frame
the cap;the price of a life by roman frister

Prosecco · 17/05/2010 21:17

I also loved

My Sister's Keeper

The Book Thief

MsDav · 18/05/2010 12:49

Sashenka by Simon Montefiore had me properly sobbing. I'm still a bit haunted by it.

The Book Thief, A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Kite Runner for all the reasons previously given on here....

The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest simply because it was the last one and I didn't want it to end.

JurgaSala · 20/05/2010 13:35

emsybrady · 23/05/2010 10:49

5Foot5 · 27/05/2010 19:56

Elizabeth Luard's "Family Life"

DawnAS · 27/05/2010 21:16

Hmmm Harry Potter (probably all of them!) and definitely Marley and Me. Even worse watching the film though - I've got two yellow labradors so very very meaningful to me.

Cicatrice · 27/05/2010 21:22

Nothing. A book has never made me cry. And I read all the time.

MrsJohnDeere · 27/05/2010 21:22

Not sure either count as adult fiction but Goodnight Mister Tom and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

MrsJohnDeere · 27/05/2010 21:23

Oh, also The Reader and Suite Francaise.

Tootlesmummy · 27/05/2010 21:25

I have just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns 5 minutes ago and I'm still a bit teary!

I also cried at:

We need to talk about Kevin
The Twins
Handle with Care

Dorothyredboots · 07/06/2010 11:22

I have three:-

Charlotte Grey

The Book of Lost Things (took me by surprise when I burst out blubbing at the end)

Germinal

FranSanDisco · 07/06/2010 11:29

The Road
Goodnight Mister Tom

mixedmamameansbusiness · 15/06/2010 14:21

Time Travellers Wife - cant wait to start her new book

To Kill a Mockingbird.... the court scene where Atticus proves Tom Robinsons innocence but you know that it will make no difference.

Captain Corelli's Mandolin and Birds Without Wings - de Bernieres has an incredible capacity to make me laugh like a complete maniac on the bus and cry like a baby.

mixedmamameansbusiness · 15/06/2010 14:28

Oh dear .... have just been reading through and have more:

Goodnight Mister Tom (almost all the way through) a truly brilliant book that I still read

The Book Thief - it didnt make me cry but had a peculiar result where once I finished I went and had a bath to avoid speaking to anyone. I just felt all knotted up. It is one I would like to read again but need to build up the courage for.

Persuasion too - even the Sally Field dramatisation made me cry.

BridesheadRegardless · 15/06/2010 14:47

God yes to Charlotte Gray, I howled in our front room as it was just unbearable, dh didn't know what to do.

Also to Birdsong, i actually shouted out loud 'for Gods sake someone stop them' as they watch hundereds of young men go over the top and get slaughtered.

In fact anthng by Sebastian Fualks has made me cry. Human Traces, Gilr at lion D'Or, On Green Dolhin Street.

I think Engleby may be the only one that hasn't.

Boy does Seb F know how to wrench the emotion.

Someday makes me cry when I so much as look at it... I have to be feeling really emotionally strong to read it to the DDs
Also 'The time traveller's Wife'.

singsinthebath · 16/06/2010 17:06

I very rarely cry at books - even if I find them very moving and thought provoking.

I cry all the time at films. And even Gok's makeovers.

I must be shallow.

mixedmamameansbusiness · 18/06/2010 09:07

Oh I just came across a book last night that I remember made me really sob - WILD SWANS. I think the fact that it is a true story also made is so poignant, it is on my reading lsit for uni and I just dont actually know if i can tackle it again.

Rosieeo · 19/06/2010 19:08

God, loads of stuff. I've cried at adverts before, at the national anthem before the rugby (in my defence, I had been drinking wine all evening)and I cry at lots of the kid's stories.

But in particular Captain Corelli's Mandolin and Behind the Scenes At The Museum: "I have been to the world's end and back and now I know what I would put in my bottom drawer. I would put my sisters."

Weeps just thinking about it and not drunk

AliGrylls · 19/06/2010 19:16

A thousand splendid suns. DH banned me from reading it in front of him because he couldn't handle the tears.

mumatron · 19/06/2010 19:17
