Anyone finished the Harry Potter book yet? Need to ask a question.....

I can't discuss it with my husband as he has not read it yet, but this is driving me mad....

DO you think that when Dumbledore pleaded with Snape just before he was killed, what he was ACTUALLY pleading for was for Snape to go through with the killing to keep up the pretence of being on Voldermorts side? Not pleading for his life.

I NEED to know!

I want to ask something too- I think i missed it when I read it.

But, how did neville get the sword back from griphook the goblin????
I sudddenly thought about it the other day and couldn't remember how it was explained (if at all)...?

Katiekin · 06/08/2007 22:56

He got it out of the sorting hat, he is a true gryffindor

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 06/08/2007 22:57

copvered in book two, the sword will appear to those gryffindors who are loyal to hogwarts and dumbledore (i think thats right, will go check i na minute)

MrsWeasley · 06/08/2007 22:59

see here

fingerwoman · 06/08/2007 23:03

ahh ok, I suppose that makes sense lol

bookwormtailmum · 06/08/2007 23:04

SPOILER*

Dumbledore knows all or if he didn't, he's very good at bluffing.

nappyaddict · 06/08/2007 23:08

i was 8 when the first book came out and have stuck with harry very loyally. do think its a shame that younger kids can't really read the books on their own anymore cos they are so long and much harder to read.

Twinklemegan · 06/08/2007 23:24

As Nappyaddict says, parents must find that only the first couple of books, say, are suitable for their 6 or 7 year old. Fine when they're all coming out new, and how convenient to be able to take her original audience along with her. But what a shame that in future kids can't appreciate the whole series at the same age.

I've read a little HP and I think it's overhyped - sorry.

bookwormtailmum · 06/08/2007 23:29

I'm in this situation with my dd - she could probably read the first book with help and maybe the second. But I can't let a 7yr old read the rest of the series!!

Katiekin · 06/08/2007 23:31

I hadn't thought of that, maybe you should hide the books and bring out one for Christmas every year?

bookwormtailmum · 06/08/2007 23:39

That's a good idea Katie. I'll have to do that - she'll probably sneak the books down from the shelf to have a go at them anyway if I leave them there long enough.

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 06/08/2007 23:42

yes dd1 is 7 and wants to start reading harry potter. i am getting her own copy of philosophers stone soon, then see how she goes (my own copy is very battered after being read so often)

Katiekin · 07/08/2007 17:09

How do you get them to want to read it? My DS1 is 9 and is happy for me to read to him, he will watch the film or listen to an audio book but reading is something he will only do when he has to!

bookwormtailmum · 07/08/2007 17:19

My dd has seen me with my nose glued to it the last few weeks . Natural curiosity?

Katiekin · 07/08/2007 17:44

he is obviously not a curious child!! My nose is always in a book. After I've done all the housework , cooking etc

fakeblonde · 07/08/2007 22:55

Sorry i haven`t read the whole thread, but what was the bit about the naked person crouching in the corner, when harry was sort of half way to heaven talking to dumbledore-what was that all about ?

bookwormtailmum · 08/08/2007 07:51

The naked person is Voldemort. Harry is being given the chance to decide whether to go back and finish him off for good or go somewhere else.

FrannyandZooey · 08/08/2007 08:05

I thought the naked 'lump' was the part of Voldemort that was placed in Harry as a Horcrux. Not a whole person, just an unformed piece of soul.

bookwormtailmum · 08/08/2007 08:11

Ah yes that makes more sense. It's unlikely that Voldemort himself would have ended up somewhere so peaceful on the way to Heaven.

fakeblonde · 08/08/2007 10:28

Aaaah yes that makes sense. Thanks for that.

skay · 08/08/2007 10:51

My DS is 4.5 and he wants to try reading the book!!!!!
Or he wants me to read it to him.
Should I or shouln't I?

Sunshinemummy · 08/08/2007 10:55

There's some quite scary concepts in the later books Skay. Do you think he can handle them?

skay · 08/08/2007 11:11

I've just realised that Harry and Voldemort are related and that Dobby, and a few other characters die so I'm not really sure.
Or maybe like Katiekin suggested, I should hide them and bring them out every Christmas when he is old enough to read them himself.
What do you think?

Habbibu · 08/08/2007 11:15

How are Harry and Voldemort related? I read the book pretty quickly, so may well have missed something, but...??
