Really want a good read but need inspiring. Hate horror, don't want anything really intellectual. here are some of my favourite books in no particular order to give idea of what I like.

Secret History
Wild Swans
Memoirs of a Geisha
Anything by Donna Leon
Pursuit of Happiness
Perfume
Wuthering Heights
Driving over lemons
Crow Road
The Beach
I don't know how she does it
anything by Marian Keyes

help please, otherwise I will be forced to try and finish sh*te cecelia ahern book 'where rainbows end' which is making me want to bite someone.

babyonboard · 13/07/2005 08:34

noddyholder · 13/07/2005 08:35

kate atkinson Case Histories i finished it yesterday and really enjoyed it

KatieinSpain · 13/07/2005 09:13

Have just been on Amazon with some of your ideas - thanks .

How about Willa Cather, not at all recent, but if you haven't come across her. Or Geraldine Brooks? I loved "Years of Wonder" and "Foreign Correspondence".

katierocket · 13/07/2005 09:15

oooo, didn't know Jung Chang had a new book. is it heavy going then?

mummytosteven · 13/07/2005 09:25

the good women of China by Xinran should be up your alley if you like Wild Swans. or how about Michael Dibdin's Aurelio Zen series of detective novels set in italy. Shade by Neil Jordan.
Geisha by Liza Dalby.

spacedonkey · 13/07/2005 11:51

I haven't read it, but I've heard that Jung Chang's Mao biog is an easy read despite heavy content. If that makes sense.

fairyfly · 13/07/2005 11:53

Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre

spykid · 13/07/2005 14:09

spykid - "Foreign Correspondence" is an autobiography and I have just discovered she has also written another non-fiction book "Nine Parts of Desire", so it's back to Amazon for me - . Must go - kids due at nursery.

KeepingMum · 13/07/2005 14:59

Not sure if this has already been recommended but I really enjoyed Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible.

spacedonkey · 15/07/2005 10:26

Has Notes on a Scandal been mentioned already? It was so unputdownable I read it in one sitting

katierocket · 15/07/2005 10:28

haven't read all thread so apologise if this has been said already but the da vinci code is a good holiday read if you don't take it too seriously. I've read that cecelia ahern book and it also made me want to bite someone! I am reading the new marian keyes and that is good fun you could try that?

sorrel · 15/07/2005 10:41
