Adrian Mole made me cry,,,,

I am a lifelong fan of the Adrian Mole books. I first read the Secret Diary when I was 12. The literary Adrian is 2 years older than me.

Anyway, over the last week or so, I have been re-reading "Adrian Mole and the Weapons of Mass Destruction". It is a fabulous political satire of the mid 2000s - but the issues - credit and Iraq are still current. I didn't notice that the first time I read it. But the bits that made me cry - some of the diary entries are letters from his teenage soldier son in Basra. So bittersweet. Maybe it is because I wasn't a mum last time I read it. Sue Townsend is a genius.

have you read the latest one?

AM was the first book I bought with my own money, from the school book club (50p a week)

he feels like an old friend

purepurple · 01/01/2010 09:49

I love Adrian Mole
Have you read The Queen and I?
It is really funny, the royal family end up living on a council estate.

BikeRunSnowflake · 01/01/2010 11:46

I ws very exited last night when I discovered that there is a new one! Desperately trying not to log onto to Amazon - which has my credit card details stored - as I have spent SO MUCH money recently.

I have read the Q&I too. But as Foosa says, Adrian is an old friend.

notnowbernard · 03/01/2010 22:38

I too love AM

CAn't remember which one it is, but entry detailing Queenie's funeral always makes me cry

elkiedee · 04/01/2010 13:49

I must catch up on Adrian Mole - I bought a set which includes all but the latest, including AM & the WMD. Adrian's son is in Basra? Eeek. AM is about my age, or maybe a year or so older (have to check dates in the first book).

Servalan · 04/01/2010 14:31

Is there a more recent one than the WMD then? (it made me cry too). I have read and reread the Adrian Mole books so many times. I absolutely love them!

TheFoosa · 04/01/2010 14:45

the latest one is The Prostrate Years

EffiePerine · 04/01/2010 14:47

the first two are among the best books ever (IMHO). Not so keen on the later ones, but still well worth a read

has anyone mentioned the poetry yet?

the tap drips and keeps me awake...

BikeRunSki · 26/01/2010 19:16

I have just finished the last one. It made me cry.

Please let there be a next one....

juneybean · 30/01/2010 15:15

I didn't realise there was a new one! I was talking about AM & the WMD last night when Tony Blair was on the news lol

mrsjuan · 30/01/2010 15:21

I read WMD when it came out a few years ago and was surprised at how much it upset me. Going to get the new one soon. Will keep tissues handy thank you Pixi

Adrian Mole was the first 'grown up' book I read when I was about 11. I remember it being in a pile of books that my mum had and begging her to read it. A lot of it washed over my head then but I reread them so many times and I picked up something new every time

The Queen and I is great too although that made me cry too!

Aliv · 30/01/2010 21:08

AM books are my desert island disc choice - love them! I hope there are many more to come.

misdee · 30/01/2010 21:16

love AM books, and recently finished WMD again. i love it, that Marigold is a right wotsit.

will look out for the new one

sheepgomeep · 30/01/2010 23:13

Sue Townsend is a very good writer,

Does anyone remember a book she wrote about an abused baby called Storm and a couple who had gone through abortion early in thier relationship. The whole book is fantastic and there is much more to the story than that but too harrowing to mention here really.

I remember reading it when I was pg with my ds and it really got to me and I've neverforgotton it. Just can't remember the name lol

TheFoosa · 31/01/2010 15:34

Was that called Ghost Children? I read that years ago, totally forgot about it.

may have to see if I still have it to reread

elkiedee · 01/02/2010 16:55

I've started rereading the Adrian Mole books from the beginning - when I've read the first 7 I'll have to try and get hold of the Prostrate Years. I haven't read WMD but bought a set of the first 7 from the Book People recently.

Queenie dies at the end of Growing Pains, the second book. I do think it's very lovely how everyone takes on a bit of the care for Bert and Queenie - Adrian's parents, the Singh family and everyone, I was very touched by all the notices posted in the paper.
