Would like to get MIL some books, she likes Maeve Binchy. As I've not read any myself, I'm not sure who else's writing MIL might enjoy. Any suggestions? I was wondering about Catherine Cookson? Or something with an Irish slant?

am googling for "similar to MB" but none stand out at me.
I do enjoy MB, can't think of similar atm.
You could just get her latest.

of that list I'd got for the Cathy Kelly and the Katie Fforde ones.
Don't enjoy Edna O'Brien personally.

Fitzy72 · 22/11/2009 20:53

Marian Keyes

SweetestThing · 22/11/2009 21:00

Marian Keyes
Penny Vincenzi
Maggie O'Farrell
Jodi Picoult

Onlyaphase · 22/11/2009 21:03

I'd go for Penny Vincenzi and Cathy Kelly out of the ones mentioned so far. My MIL enjoys them anyway.

She also likes Lesley Pearce if you wanted something lighter, more escapist and predictable.

lilolilmanchester · 22/11/2009 21:04

Iris Gower, without a doubt. or Rosamund Pilcher. I also like catherine cookson !!!

Katymac · 22/11/2009 21:09

Josephine Cox
Rosamund Pilchard

Portofino · 22/11/2009 21:18

I love Maeve Binchy! Why do i feel embarrassed to admit that on here? Also Penny Vicenzi, but some are better than others. I'm more a reader of thrillers and biographies but both can tell a good story.

Onlyaphase · 22/11/2009 21:36

Portofino - I like Penny Vincenzi too! She can certainly tell a good story.

Rosamund Pilcher - honestly this is the only author you need. My mum adores her and MB. Try September, Coming Home or Winter Solstice.

FritesMenthe · 23/11/2009 20:32

Wow, loads of ideas. Thank you!
I'm going to order the most recent Maeve Binchys, and a couple of others from your suggestions.

Has she read the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society? Lovely story and similar to MB.

gagamama · 24/11/2009 10:17

My mum likes Maeve Binchy and Erica James, both of whom are usually considerate enough to bring out new hardbacks just before Christmas.
