Merrylegs · 08/07/2010 09:10

Oh I really liked American Wife but didn't like Prep.

I thought I would love it - subject matter right up my street. but I had a real problem with Lee. She was so unlikeable. No reedeming features. And not particularly clever so how did she even get a scholarship?

To be on the side of the observer you have to like something about her, and I didn't.

Grumpy old caaaaa...

MayorNaze · 08/07/2010 09:11

you didn't have to like her but could you not relate to it in any way at all???

Merrylegs · 08/07/2010 09:17

No. At first I thought this is going to be really good, but she just didn't do herself any favours. You want to secretly know she is charming, or clever, or pretty or interesting, so that you think 'yeah, soon all those biatches will see her true colours, Go for it Lee.'

But after chapters and chapters she still didn't turn out to be pretty or clever or charming or interesting. Just grumpy and cross and sneery. Of course all the pupils were ridiculous with their swishy hair and sense of entitlement and pointless school rituals, but at least they were interesting and living and vital.

I thought Lee was a bit of a downer actually.

MayorNaze · 08/07/2010 11:27

but that's the point!!! trying to be this, or that, or the other in order to be accepted, consiously making decisions to be seen as this or that etc

normal people i think are actually not especially funny/beautiful/charming etc, that is part of growing up and discovering your own identity and becoming comfortable with your own personality/character/body.

CompyCod · 08/07/2010 11:28

ok am bored now

MayorNaze · 08/07/2010 11:28
