Oh yes, that's it. They had it in Borders with a "we recommend" sign and I thought I recognised his name.

Will order now.

squeaver · 27/09/2009 17:54

Oh he's a she . Why did I never realise that before? It could only really have been written by a woman now i think about it.

Hmm - have read this but I didn't like it. I think it was the fact that I didn't really 'get' why she went and why her parents let her...

llareggub · 27/09/2009 18:19

I wasn't overly gripped by Prep. It didn't hold my attention at all but agree that Lee was portrayed very convincingly as an outsider.

CNyle · 27/09/2009 18:34

she went as she was an outsider and wanted to find out if she fitted in elsewhere
I thought it was SO SO accurate

Oh I LOVED Prep

Found it my accident in the library, didn't know anything about the author.

Liked the names Aspeth and Cross Sugarman.

Plus went to a boarding school so all good stuff.

llareggub · 27/09/2009 18:44

Well, I went to a south Wales comp so I guess my school experience is very removed from a New England prep!

CNyle · 27/09/2009 18:44

yes ditto boarding school

MarshaBrady · 27/09/2009 18:46

llareregubb I admit I have a big soft spot for boarding school stories. Patrick Gale did one too.

The girl always seems to be a bit out of it, then finds her place etc etc

But I quite like the terminology.

llareggub · 27/09/2009 18:48

I shall admit to a fondness for same which is why I bought prep in the first place. Perhaps I'll stick to re-reading Chalet School instead.

CNyle · 27/09/2009 18:50

yes but in relaity its all screwed up kids and alocohol

TheFoosa · 27/09/2009 18:52

she also wrote The Man of My dreams, worth checking out

Laugs · 09/10/2009 20:46

I loved Prep, thought The Man of My Dreams was much weaker. Prep was apparently very autobiographical. It's a brilliant book for reminding you exactly why you don't want to be a teenager again.

snickersnack · 10/10/2009 19:25

They are very different books though, aren't they? I couldn't believe they were written by the same person. I enjoyed Prep a lot - but I loved American Wife.

Man Of My Dreams was so dull I can't remember anything about it!

NyeEve · 10/10/2009 19:26

yy agree

Saltire · 10/10/2009 19:31

I saw American Wife in Waterstones the other day, and couldn't decide whether to buy it or not. I didn't in the end, is it good?

NyeEve · 10/10/2009 19:31

NO ITS FABBBBBBBB

Saltire · 10/10/2009 20:00

I might give it a go then, have got a gift card for Waterstones to spend!

fiercebadrabbit · 13/10/2009 17:37

I had no idea Curtis was a woman

Am learning all sorts today, just discovered from another thread that a cucumber is not a vegetable

sirsquid · 27/06/2010 20:20

Am reading American wife at the moment, enjoying so far.

'Prep' I thought had it's moments and some wonderful observations. I started off reading it thinking, i'm going to love this, but ultimately i grew to really dislike the protaganist and what happenend at the end didn't quite work for me.

So a curate's egg of a book really.

MrsBadger · 27/06/2010 20:27

but so dated

I had real trouble picturing them from descriptions oof clothes etc
