Now deep within my english lecture circles, Mr Brown is a name often said as if you have acid in your mouth. He is despised because of his erm... (in some people's opinions) lax approach to writing.

I know I could of started something really very...

In my opinion I hated deception point but dv code and angels and demons I felt were quite an easy holiday read. A break from the hard hitting literature I was encountering during term time.

I do apologise for exceptionally long post.

please dont verbally abuse me I am only enquiring!

If Dan Brown's book gets people reading, then that is a wonderful thing.

I have no time for book snobs. I read everything from classics to romance novels.

Romance novels for sheer unrealistic escapism, classics and high brow novels for the enjoyment of the English Language as well as a well crafted story.

So if you want to read Dan Brown's book, read it and stuff what anyone thinks.

drlove8 · 15/09/2009 16:36

id read it (and probably will), but i also read the side of the cornflakes!

paddington21 · 15/09/2009 16:40

I enjoy (supposedly) high-brow literature, and at the same time I enjoyed Da Vinci Code as well as Angels And Demons. They both served their purpose i.e. no-brainer, fast-paced thriller. It is only when people start mistaking Dan Brown's work for "literature" that the problem starts. Oh, and when they start accepting his yarns as gospel truth as in the Da Vinci Code. Ye gads, the number of documentaries "refuting" the DVC story. What's to refute? It's FICTION for crying out loud

And to answer your question, I will definitely be reading The Lost Symbol. Reading is reading and books are books. The only thing that matters to me is whether I liked it or not.

Squitten · 16/09/2009 15:56

I too enjoy "intelligent" literature but I love a bit of fluff now and then. I have all Dan Brown's books on my shelf and I love a bit of Phillippa Gregory too, to much eyebrow raising from DH. I shall be reading the new one and I don't care!

LoveTheCarbs · 16/09/2009 21:10

I'm not a book snob but I really didn't like The Da Vinci code. I thought it was obvious and a bit boring.

So I won't be reading his new book, unless it gets rave reviews and then I may sneak a peek..

cocolepew · 16/09/2009 21:12

It's £5 in hardback in Asda, if anyone is interested. I enjoyed The DVC but none of his other books grabbed me.

zisforzebra · 18/09/2009 18:01

I'll read pretty much anything but I hated Da Vinci Code. It read like he was being paid per word so had to included every single little bit of research he'd done and then repeat himself three pages later. I probably won't read the new one based on that!

Prunerz · 18/09/2009 18:05

I think he's awful BUT it is a skill to write a pageturner.

(Mind you I just read The Quincunx by Charles Palliser and that is a cracking pageturner and well-written to boot.)

bramblebooks · 18/09/2009 18:42

Am currently reading the latest which DH turned up with from the supermarket.

ARen'tI incrediblycleverteachingyou allthisstuffin mynewbookBrown?

It's an ok read for passing the time with but getting tired as a genre. IMVHO!!!

SqueezyCheese · 18/09/2009 18:47

I wouldn't go out of my way to read it but maybe if one of my friends recommended it, I'd check it out with an open mind. Am not a book snob.

Surely the essence of a good book is whether the reader enjoys it. I read Angels and Demons and although it was really far fetched, I quite enjoyed it for what it was. I didn't like Deception Point or Da Vinci Code though.

Each to their own.

BigMomma3 · 19/09/2009 14:05

Just finished it . Bought it on Wednesday and finished the 509 pages last night - so good that I could not put it down and house and kids have suffered benign neglect . Absolutely love Dan Brown! Must be just me that enjoys losing myself in a good factually based thriller .

bramblebooks · 19/09/2009 18:38

Now I'm in the last quarter it's rather good and I too am ignoring the family.

Flamesparrow · 19/09/2009 18:47

I'm annoyed. I read all other DB books through borrowing them from a woman DH worked with. She bloody retired. I ain't buying it.

differentID · 19/09/2009 18:51

flame, could you book it through the library?

Flamesparrow · 19/09/2009 18:53

Now you're just getting cocky aren't you?

differentID · 19/09/2009 19:02

who, me?

Flamesparrow · 19/09/2009 19:03

Yup, with your traditional book borrowing methods n stuff

differentID · 19/09/2009 19:04

I would willingly lend it to you but I think dh would be pissed off at me as he hasn't read it yet. I'm not qwllowed to reqad it till he;s finished.

Flamesparrow · 19/09/2009 19:06

Can see it now...

"Have you seen my book?"

"Yes, I posted it to a stranger online...."

differentID · 19/09/2009 19:07

he doesn't think of mn as starnegrs to me. not any more any way.

tillyfernackerpants · 19/09/2009 19:17

not a book snob but don't really enjoy DB's writing so probably won't be reading this. Unless I get it in one of my reading groups anyway!

Flamesparrow · 19/09/2009 19:29

Lol - DH doesn't tend to think of MN as strangers either.

Stayingsunnygirl · 19/09/2009 19:31

Got it, read it, loved it!
