save me from corner folder-overs....

(Dons helmet for cover)I fold the corners over................sorry. I also break the backs of those annoyingly springy paperbacks and I over-bend hardbacks so my hand doesn't ache from holding apart the pages (I love the sound of the glue cracking.) My books get wrinkly from bath water steam, and bits where I haven't dried my hand properly when turning over the page.

I do however love books with those silky integral book markers and find them very useful in recipe books when I'm flicking from one recipe to another. I do however mess around with them and they become frayed.

I am a messy person, can you tell?!

Forrester · 19/02/2009 10:23

Ooh, I also leave the book open and upside down on the page I was on.....

supergluebum · 19/02/2009 10:45

Usually I read 2 different books or a book and a magazine, and only really read in bed, so I use one book inside the other as a sort of book sandwich!

sockmonkey · 19/02/2009 10:58

I use any bit of paper to hand... but now I want a goat!
I cant bear folded corners, or cracked spines. Something DH & I have in common, all our books look unread

elle23 · 19/02/2009 11:28

have a few bookmarks somewhere but usually use bills/bank statements, hair bands, pens, pieces of paper LOs have scribbled on, lighters...anything that's close to hand really

AnnVan · 19/02/2009 11:30

I also do the book sandwich thing. Also use the dust jacket as a bookmark sometimes. Have also used train tickets, receipts etc. I just lose any bookmark I buy or am given. I hate craked spines with a passion - my ex boyfriend used to do this to my books - grrrrr, really mushed my books up. My books did look unread until MIL's DD developed a habit of taking them all off the bookshelf by the armful and depositing them all over the house. It really annoys me and I bite my tongue every time they're round, as MIL doesn't stop her. Um oops sorry went off on a tangent.

Forrester, next you'll be saying you use those little page-marker post-it sticky things. My rare-books-librarian friend tells me they are The Devil Incarnate.

Timeisablindguide · 20/02/2009 00:36

train ticket

Clary · 20/02/2009 01:14

I usually use a bus ticket. lol at cotton buds and pill packet tho.

Or do what thumbwitch does.

I don't fold over corners but I don't mind if a book looks read. I have a colleague who is scarily careful with his books so that if you borrow one you scarcely dare read it for fear or bending the spine etc...

My recipe books are the messiest

Does anyone else ever do that thing where you start reading, think, oh no, I wasn't as far as that - skip back a bit and read on, thinking, oh no I've read this - to end up where you started?

FlossieT · 20/02/2009 01:42

YES.

I have a couple of boxes of bookmarks - started collecting after I found a lovely Edwardian one in a second hand book and the shop gave me the pick of some that he'd found when pricing stock. I still collect the free advert ones you get in shops and libraries - I think they're classed as ephemera.

HOWEVER - I rarely feel bothered to dig out the boxes, extract one of these and actually USE them. I did have a lovely brass marker that DP gave me, but I can't find it now and have a horrible feeling I might have left it in a library book - if anyone finds a brass bookmark with a welsh dragon on it, can I have it back please?

So I use whatever comes to hand - a postcard, beer mats (am currently using a Wallace and Gromit mat from our T-Party at work), receipts, fliers for plays or local events....anything but a book mark!

Up until last Friday anything that came to hand, bus tickets, clothes tags, a sock, fiver (plan with the fiver was if I ever was really really broke could ransack the bookshelf and I suddenly would be rich!... never worked out though always spent and then lost my page)

Girlandboy I got one of those beady things for Christmas 2 years ago. I hadn't a clue what it was and threw it away last time I did a spring clean thinking what am I ever going to use this for??

Anyway, DS (22m) creche made the most beautiful ( and ... PFB comment... artistic) bookmarks for the mommies for Valentine's Day!! I love mine... I will never ever use another bookmark. Ever.
