The Wire. I know it's not the right section and I know I've come late to this programme...

...but isn't it terrific?
Fellow addicts, come and tell me why you love it.

OH MY GOD! The best programme I've ever seen on television. It's even better than The Sopranos and I'm a huge, and quite obsessive fan of that too). What series are you on?

nkf · 02/02/2009 18:43

I've just started. I have watched most of series 1.

You have SO MUCH good stuff to come. It's completely addictive and you find yourself thinking of it when you aren't watching it!

nkf · 02/02/2009 18:57

I know. It's weird. It's as if I've met a whole bunch of real people who I want to know all about. The criminals too.

All five series are wicked. I think number 3 was the best.... Might have to start watching them all again now!

nkf · 02/02/2009 19:05

Is each series a major investigation?

ProfessorCalculus · 02/02/2009 19:05

I'm in the middle of series one and I'm not loving it yet. What am I missing? And why adult fiction and not telly addicts?

nkf · 02/02/2009 19:08

I can't see telly adults so I just shoved it in here. Sorry.

But, more to the point. How can you not love it?

OP posts:
ProfessorCalculus · 02/02/2009 19:11

A lot of the time I can't keep up with what's going on. Either they mumble a lot or speak too fast or I'm just plain dim
So I find myself drifting away and then getting more and more lost.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 02/02/2009 19:12

Each series is set in a different area of Baltimore. Series 3 is set in the schools' system and the kids are wicked.

Take your time with it ProfessorCalculus - it does take a while. It kind of creeps up on you and then takes over your mind....

smallorange · 02/02/2009 19:13

Series 4 is the best IMHO. Watch it with the subtitles on if you are getting lost. It's really worth it, althougfh I though series 2 was a bit more hard going (FIL and MIL thought it was the best though.

smallorange · 02/02/2009 19:13

Do you know I wish I could watch it for thwe first time all over again.

ProfessorCalculus · 02/02/2009 19:15

Yes, subtitles are a good idea.

HarrogateMum · 02/02/2009 19:22

nkf I just started a thread on this a few days ago saying what else would I like if I love the Wire!

Very annoyingly my DH has gone away skiing right in the middle of watching series 2 and on pain of death we dont watch it without each other so got to look at the box tempting me until Friday.......

nkf · 02/02/2009 19:24

Oooh. What were you recommended? I couldn't wait. I'm thinking of drugging the children so I can finish off series one.
Joking of course.

OP posts:
HarrogateMum · 02/02/2009 19:45

ha ha - dont worry I would feel the same! I was recommended The Shield which is an LA based cop drama but apparently just as gritty. I have ordered the first series from Amazon for when we finish the Wire so we can get straight onto something else - and its quite cheap - £9 per series or something on Amazon. Someone also recommended the West Wing, not a cop drama I know but people do rave aobut it and the whole 8 series are about £50.

nkf · 02/02/2009 19:53

I've already had the West Wing craze. And, yes it is good.

Well, The Wire will keep me happy for a while.

The Wire is terrific? True that...

carrotsandpeasifyouplease · 02/02/2009 20:03

its brilliant, i'm on series 3 at the mo and I think about it when i'm not watching it. Would love to hear what you think of The Shield Harrogatemum as I am already searching for a replacement.
I didn't enjoy series 2 as much and as I said on another thread, the scene when Bubble walks through Hamsterdam is giving me nightmares, but its the best thing i've ever watched.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 02/02/2009 20:11

Yeah, the accents take a while to hear - we have to watch it quite loud so we can hear. You do get used to it though, after a while. I get so absorbed that a whole hour flashes by!

mooki · 02/02/2009 20:17

I lent my mum and dad series 1 of the Wire last week and now they've come back asking for series 2 AND 3 just in case we don't see them next week :-)

I love that it has a sense of humour and the fact that there are bad characters who still make you empathise with them.

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeet.

Yes, let me know about the Shield. I loved the West Wing, thought 24 went a bit too silly after about season 3.

noonki · 02/02/2009 20:17

We've watched all five and had to mourn when it was over. Other tv seemed so rubbish.

I particularly liked series 1 & 3.

I love the way that most of the characters are multi-faceted, like real people are. And how you root for some of the Poe - lice and some of the gangsters at the same time.

I still find it funny hearing the english actors speak in their normal voices!

The fact Obama loved it gives me hope that perhaps he will take up with some more alternative solutions to the social problems in the US.

shiiiiiiiiiiiiiite I miss it

mooki · 02/02/2009 20:19

sheeeeet x post :-) Noonki and we're only 1 letter apart
