An MN library style thing idea here, shoot me down in flames if not suitable!

My mum reads about 6 new release paperbacks a weeka dn gives them to me, I read and then send to second hand shops
What I thought was for the price of 2nd class postage (about 80p for paperback) I could send on to a Mn'er who wanted it, they then could advertise on the book title thread when they had read it and could send it on, I know Tescos sell them for £3.73 which is cheap and a library is free, but would anyone be up for this?
I have HUGE list of titles, good stuff to set up with and anyone coould donate?
Whaddya think
Am off to bed now but will look tomorrow and see what people think?

lol You sound like a right pair

Hi - want to let you know that this is still in the works. We finished updating all of our reviews just yesterday, have taken a deep breath and are now getting stuck into building a library.

It'll be a couple of weeks (sorry!), but we'll be in contact in the meantime. First question: have you sorted out what you'd like to do about postage costs or has this turned out to be a non-issue?

SaintGeorge · 18/05/2005 11:54

You must have read my mind - came to post a little bump for Tech . Thanks for the update.

Still trying to get my head around the postage issue - size of book might have a big impact on costs as will how often people borrow rather than lend. Will try to come up with a solution to that one soon.

Hayls · 18/05/2005 14:18

I've only just seen this and think it's a brilliant idea. I will have a look through all my titles and add them on if that's OK. I'm also happy to offer any help if needed. No great ideas on the postage front but i personally would be happy to pay to post out as I think I'd get it back when I received books.

MarsLady · 18/05/2005 14:20

doh! That reminds me..... have to make my list and send to StG.

SaintGeorge · 18/05/2005 14:24

Looks over glasses Librarian style and wags finger at naughty Mars

Rockydog · 19/05/2005 07:56

i would be up for this too!

lilibet · 19/05/2005 11:00

I will do a list at weekend - promise!

tiny01 · 23/05/2005 21:24

just read through the thread and think it is a wonderful idea. I would love to join too please. I will get a list of books together and email (I also dont want them returned). Its a shame I just gave three boxes full to the local charity shop, but I am sure to stock up again.
Well done Saintgeorge for sorting it all out. Just one question, how will you get paid for sending out labels as I am printerless?

SaintGeorge · 23/05/2005 21:28

Don't worry about that tiny. It will only be one stamp.

At the moment we haven't decided exactly how to handle the overall postage issue. At the moment it stands that the 'lender' will pay the postage and that what comes around goes around so to speak. I will be keeping a track though so if one person seems to be paying too much postage (for having poular books ) we will reassess.

tiny01 · 23/05/2005 21:59

Oh I would gladly pay double to lend the books cos at the moment it costs me a fortune to feed my habit and I know I will be borrowing from all the other lovely avid readers. Fair play to you for giving up your time and stamps. Although you may have to review that if this gets as popular as it should be.

SaintGeorge · 26/05/2005 10:18

Just a quick update.

JJ is working away on the library database which I have had a sneak preview of and it is looking great

All of you who have promised lists of books - WHERE ARE THEY? Libraries impose overdue fines you know, I might have to start chasing you all with reminders!

Jillyk · 27/05/2005 12:16

Just come across this thread.
Definitely interested and will start working on a list of books.

carve123 · 19/08/2005 12:10

is this up and running. I would love to join. My books aren't very highbrow (chiclit!) but that's all my brain can take with a new baby. What do i need to do ?

mumtosomeone · 19/08/2005 12:12

any gill mansell ones?

SaintGeorge · 19/08/2005 12:15

Still going ahead, just slightly delayed. Tech is busy with other stuff over the summer but hopefully it will be up and running in the autumn.

I will post here when I have further news

mumtosomeone · 19/08/2005 12:17

will look at what I have!
Childrens books too?

Legacy · 19/08/2005 12:25

Can someone post a link to the proposed site - I've lost it in this thread!

mumtosomeone · 19/08/2005 12:29

not read all this thread...its sooo long!
How will it work? Can we just request a book and if someone has it they post us it?

dropinthe · 19/08/2005 12:33

I remember this thread! This is going back a bit, isn't it!

SaintGeorge · 19/08/2005 14:56

Hi everyone.

I did set up a Yahoo group but then MN Towers agreed to host the library direct on here instead.

The general idea is that anyone who has books that they are happy to share - and that they aren't bothered about not getting back - can donate them to the library. A link will be available on MN which will take you to the list of available books. I will initially be acting as librarian (as will Piffle who had the idea in the first place ) and will coordinate the sending of books from person to person. We haven't finalised a few details like postage costs yet.

I will also be coming up with some labels to go inside the books.

When the database is ready I will be requesting lists of available books from anyone who wants to donate.

If anyone wants to get one step ahead and send me lists now (I need title, author, genre as bare minimum of info) my email address is antlxstew @ yahoo.co.uk (remove spaces)
