An MN library style thing idea here, shoot me down in flames if not suitable!

My mum reads about 6 new release paperbacks a weeka dn gives them to me, I read and then send to second hand shops
What I thought was for the price of 2nd class postage (about 80p for paperback) I could send on to a Mn'er who wanted it, they then could advertise on the book title thread when they had read it and could send it on, I know Tescos sell them for £3.73 which is cheap and a library is free, but would anyone be up for this?
I have HUGE list of titles, good stuff to set up with and anyone coould donate?
Whaddya think
Am off to bed now but will look tomorrow and see what people think?

Right I'm off to find some books.

Thank you

Munchkinola · 17/04/2005 18:04

Can I add non fiction?

SaintGeorge · 17/04/2005 18:06

Anything you like - just put a suitable name in the genre column. 'Non-Fiction' is fine or you could maybe be more specific (like the travel one I have put on).

Munchkinola · 17/04/2005 18:08

Plus I think I need a list of genres as I'm struggling to think of them and it will make it easier when searching the database. Maybe someone could post some?

SaintGeorge · 17/04/2005 18:18

Well if you want a really comprehensive list check this out.

I'll figure out a basic list though and post later

Munchkinola · 17/04/2005 18:40

Next question, sorry

How do you edit your entry? Say I wanted to change the genre?

SaintGeorge · 17/04/2005 18:43

AT the moment you can't edit, but give me a couple of minutes to visit there and I will change it so you can

SaintGeorge · 17/04/2005 18:47

You should have an edit option at the right hand end of the row. Good to see the list building up nicely.

Munchkinola · 17/04/2005 18:48

I can see edit but when I click it says I dont Hve permission to edit that record {confused emoticon]

SaintGeorge · 17/04/2005 18:49

Strange - off to investigate, back in a sec.

SaintGeorge · 17/04/2005 18:51

Should be okay now, sorry

Munchkinola · 17/04/2005 18:54

Fantastic!!!!

I've got to go put dd to bed now but I'll be back later.

piffle · 25/04/2005 12:10

I've joined up and put in my other email address as yahoo is sooo slow on my pc.
It looks fab
Are we going to compile a list of books asap then?
Well done Saint G it looks very very clever!!!!

Has this thread gone quiet because people have lost interest, or are we all just very busy? I can feel Amazon singing a siren's song and I'm counting on you lovely Mumsnetters to save me by getting the library thing going.

SaintGeorge · 26/04/2005 20:12

I've had flu, so not been doing much. Don't know about the others

I have made a little label to go in the front of the books but I am waiting for MN HQ to give the go ahead because I have used the MN logo on it.

Justine did also mention that they are talking to Tech to see if they can maybe run the library on here, to save us deserting to Yahoo. She is getting back to me on both things asap.

bran · 26/04/2005 21:07

Ohhh goody, thanks for that SG. I'll resist the call of Amazon for a little longer then.

Reading my last post I think I might have sounded a little demanding (wanting other people to sort the library out). I would try and use the excuse that I'm too busy to volunteer my services, but that's obviously not true as I'm not too busy to read. The truth is I'm lazy and rubbish at admin-type things, further complicated by having a memory like a goldfish so if I did offer to do some organisation things would move even more slowly.

JustineMumsnet · 27/04/2005 14:31

Hello, hello,
Tech he say yes! To having an on-site library, that is. Will take two to three weeks he says (my money's on three but we will keep reminding him). Lables are a great idea and of course they can have mumsnet logo. Can you contact us SaintGeorge to talk design/ implementation etc.
We will need librarians of course so hands up everyone; and someone to run it - "Chief Librarian" - Saint George? We'll be back with further details as soon as Tech's done his thing.

SaintGeorge · 27/04/2005 14:48

Brilliant Justine

Quite happy to be a librarian, though hopefully there will be some others takers too.

Will be in touch regarding labels.

Thanks again.

piffle · 28/04/2005 09:53

me me me I'll help, am so pleased this has come to fruition!!!!
my book shelves are smiling at me, likely to be relieved of their load soonest!

lilibet · 28/04/2005 12:34

Can you add me on please - I've been into yahoo and done my enry thingy!

rosiegif · 28/04/2005 12:50

Hi..quite new to MN so I don't really recognise any of the names on this thread. I think this sounds great though. I have quite a few books I could contribute (not worried about getting them back at all)and would like to help with library if you need me...might need a bit of training though...am quick learner!

rosiegif · 28/04/2005 12:59

Is it worth me signing up with Yahoo if the library is going to be moved to this site?

rosiegif · 28/04/2005 12:59

Is it worth me signing up with Yahoo if the library is going to be moved to this site?

SaintGeorge · 28/04/2005 14:01

Hi all.

Until Tech gets back to us with details of when and how the database will run we can't really go much further with this.

I am happy to collate all info in the meantime and have downloaded the books already on the yahoo site ready for transfer to here.

I don't think there is much point in continuing the Yahoo group or putting any more books on there, but if anyone wants to send me details of book contributions I will start organising the data for when Tech is ready.

piffle - do you want to be a librarian? I think if this takes off I am really going to need some help

lilibet - have approved you to the Yahoo group
rosiegif - by all means join the Yahoo group but there won't be much ongoing activity.

You can both look on there what sort of info we need for book contributions. Don't add any though - email details to me instead please.

email for those who don't know it yet antlxstew @ yahoo.co.uk (remove spaces)

SaintGeorge · 28/04/2005 14:03

Oh and can I just add...

We're getting a library..we're getting a library.
Three cheers for Tech and Mumsnet HQ
